Now whether you think that's a good or bad thing would depend on how you feel about Hillary, I guess. Either way, it's disingenuous when people say no one should take an interest in the content she's putting out because clearly a lot of people are still listening to what she has to say and might be influenced by that.

Because it's basic common sense. It's no more inspiring than if the five of them all agreed to say that America's great or that it's good to breath. It's a public service announcement that nobody disagrees with. It sends a good message and highlights a good cause, but if this is "inspiring" to people then it's nothing more than a sign that we as a society expect absolutely nothing. That's the point.

Lol, I knew there would be some way that somebody would find a reason to shit on this act of compassion, before I started reading this thread. This reminds me of people I've seen (in my own life) who refuse to volunteer to help a good cause, but have no problem criticizing other people for helping because their donation wasn't "enough" or their labor wasn't done "right." Salt and Sanctuary (indie game heavily inspired by Dark Souls, but with platform jumps)

Darkest Dungeon (absolutely loved everything about this game, though some people might be turned off by the "bad luck" random number generator moments)

Tekken 7 (it controls well, is mostly balanced for a fighter and has new characters)

Divinity: Original Sin, Enhanced Edition (this RPG has so much depth; there are a bunch of different ways to play it)

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Game of the Year Edition (Not finished yet, but I'm really liking all the missions and hunting the war chiefs)

Yes, most of these games are at least a year old, but the upside is I bought most of them for under $10.

I wouldn't say Disney ruined Star Wars (they can throw absurd amounts of money and marketing at both franchises), but everyone should know what we're getting with this union. The overall point I'm making is that when you use your office to take away a lot of money, and then donate back an amount of money that seems like a lot but is 1) a tiny amount compared to what you're trying to take away, and 2) an even tinier amount of compared to your own wealth, it's hard to see this gesture as anything but a transparent PR move.

That isn't comparable because Trump isn't personally responsible for the storm and flooding in Texas. He isn't punching anyone in the face or kicking anyone, literally or figuratively. You could make the argument that he isn't doing enough to help stop nature from doing that, though.

Regarding the donation, Trump's amount isn't proportionate to what he can give, but it does not change the fact that one million dollars is still a lot of money, moreso than what most people will part with. I'm donating, but I admit my $10 is not really going to help anyone because it's small, and it only becomes helpful when you lump it together with many other people's donations.

I'm pointing out that he was not very good at exploring (he had no clue where he was), he crimes far outweigh his contributions, and that the task could have just as easily been accomplished by anyone else at the time. I think the mention of the Vikings is just to point out how people were aware of other landmasses and his 'discovery' was more a charting journey. Not only that, but you know, there were a ton of inhabitants already here. Like, no one remembers the guy that discovered the middle east for Europe, because, you know, there were already tons of people there.

It's just, what is he known for? Discovering America and leading the way to colonization. The first isn't true and even if you argue it is, he still did it by blundering his way through and with a crew of experienced people doing literally all the work. The latter is only true in the sense that he took someone else's money and funded a pleasure cruise and then wiped out most of the Taino people and other indigenous groups so there would be room for the European settlers.

Now, I get that he was the first, but at this point it's sort of like being the first to take your parent's minivan for a joyride and accidentally crash the car into a pot of gold. Why commemorate that? That's not to mention that the holiday is pretty much a big middle finger to the descendants of the people he narrowly committed genocide against.

Yeah, I don't disagree with what you said. Columbus is definitely a very controversial figure and I can totally see why some people (maybe most?) will never be comfortable celebrating him. I don't know... I try to remember that a lot of people, both in the past and presently, have horrible character flaws, but I still give credit where it's due, even if doing so is inconvenient and unpleasant. Anyway, thanks for keeping it civil.
