People aren't criticizing Trump for 'not donating enough.' Theyre criticizing him for the empty gesture. He plans to cut FEMA by almost 700 million. He plans to cut flood prevent efforts by almost 200 million.

It's cool though, guys. Trump is donating 1/900th of the money he's gutting from efforts like this back to Texas. What a hero!

Trump is actually throwing down money.

Throwing money on the ground won't help though. He needs to donate it, or it will just get wet and probably not be usable or get stolen.

Do Trump fans lack basic critical thinking skills?

Here let's do an analogy (that's when you make a comparison between one thing and another, typically for the purpose of explanation).

Let's say I punch you in the face, kick you in the balls, stamp on your stomach and then take a giant shit on your chest. And then I give you $5.

Am I:

A) A good guy
B) A miserable asshole

If you answered B, then you're getting somewhere.

The conclusion I've come to through critical thinking is...

- Trump is donating a large sum of his own money to help Harvey victims
- You have yet to prove your own charitable actions or empathy for Harvey victims

Therefore...

-No matter how much smug trolling you flood the topic with, we can conclude objectively that Trump > You

People gotta separate the man from the President.

The President is cutting money from FEMA because he sees a better use for it.

The man is donating 1 million to those in need.

It's an easy separation if you wish to make it. He can be both a bad President (if that's your opinion) and a decent man in the same gesture.

First of all, it's amazing to me that you hold the president of the united states to exactly the same standards as me, a random poster on the internet from Scotland.

Second of all, Trump is taking away an even larger sum of money by several magnitudes that will directly make it more difficult to help victims of future disasters like this (and we can be sure there will be many more).

I dunno what else you need here. If you were the chairman of the company I worked at and you made my job redundant because you wanted to pay for a nicer security door on the office, but then you gave me $20 bucks of your own personal salary with a slap on the back and a "don't spend it all at once", guess what - I would think you were the worst kind of asshole.

That isn't comparable because Trump isn't personally responsible for the storm and flooding in Texas. He isn't punching anyone in the face or kicking anyone, literally or figuratively. You could make the argument that he isn't doing enough to help stop nature from doing that, though.

Regarding the donation, Trump's amount isn't proportionate to what he can give, but it does not change the fact that one million dollars is still a lot of money, moreso than what most people will part with. I'm donating, but I admit my $10 is not really going to help anyone because it's small, and it only becomes helpful when you lump it together with many other people's donations.

The overall point I'm making is that when you use your office to take away a lot of money, and then donate back an amount of money that seems like a lot but is 1) a tiny amount compared to what you're trying to take away, and 2) an even tinier amount of compared to your own wealth, it's hard to see this gesture as anything but a transparent PR move.

I don't know anything about you, but if you earned say, 50k a year then proportionately (from a percentage point of view) you're donating about as much as Trump is.

It's definitely a good gesture that you're donating $10, but did you expect any praise for it, or should we all pat you on the back for it? Would it even touch the sides of your overall worth as a human being?

When the Potus travels to a disaster area to survey the damage and meet the victims, it's usually a good idea to see the damage/meet the victims.

Only Dimwit Donnie would further drain Secret Service/police resources and completely ignore the disaster.

No, I don't expect any praise. I doubt most people do. Trump probably does want everyone to know about his donation. Anyway, I hope the flood victims get as much money as they need to get back to normalcy soon.

People pointing out the cuts that he's made aren't necessarily saying "that means his donation is worthless"...its just pointing out why the cuts he made can be harmful and why we should consider keeping things like that. "he cut them because he thought it was being wasted and it could be used elsewhere"...doesn't look like such a waste now, does it? and i get that disasters like this don't happen all the time, but when the cuts he makes goes to BS (like his dumb wall project) its worth pointing out.

One million dollars is 0.025% of the President's reported wealth. If I gave $100 (roughly the same percentage of my net worth) that wouldn't earn me any glowing newspaper headlines. Why should we give a shit now? Also doesn't the President have the power to address the problem in a much more systemic way than privately give to charities? I guess not if everyone (somewhat rightfully) hates his guts.
