I went through some fairly significant trauma this week. I was one of the first responders to one of my youth (I'm a supervisor for group homes designed for at-risk teenagers) who was successful in a suicide attempt.

It's been a rough week. Oddly I've been the most put together of my colleagues and they've been leaning on me for strength and support. I think the process my wife and I have gone through has led me to be far more understanding and like, capable of dealing with suicide.

Man, that is rough.
Do you also have to contact their next of kin, or otherwise put their affairs in order?

Apologies not sure this is the right topic for this but as TC is sharing thought i would as well.

Well, I appreciated it at least and I think others will too.

That part about starting over being scary is especially true for me. I think TC is struggling with that as well because theyre not there yet and it can make a person feel guilty about their expectations and overall feelings. Ive seen peer pressure even be a part of that when the grieving person didnt grieve the way everyone expected them to, which caused some drama. That becomes, or can become, an extra layer of guilt or fear. Ehh, its a rough situation even if you prep yourself to handle the loss.

I mourn daily the loss of an idealized future that we foresaw together. I mourn the loss of the person my wife and I wanted her to become as we aged together. I am a very strong person and for lack of a better, healthier word... I can take it. And I will until my wife gets MAID and is allowed to die with dignity.

I've never been much of a drinking man, but I honestly feel like I need a strong drink after reading that. It made me think about some of the people who arent with me anymore, even the ones who maybe didnt pass away but we just lost touch over the years. Its this intense bitter sweet feeling because they were awesome and now theyre gone. Ive heard that we should be happy that we knew them at all, but the truth is it still sucks to lose someone we loved. Friggen life can be so unpredictable and cruel sometimes.

There was a guy doing it during a time when no laws really covered it and eventually they convicted him of murder. Since then no one has bothered to try making it legal.

Ok, thanks.

Well, I still believe a lot of families could benefit from it and I bet many others feel the same. I wonder if there are any politicians interested in this at all, though.

The problem is I work 40 hours a week so sometimes if we need shit done, I'm just at work at that time. If we need more from our landlady I will step in for sure next time because this is ridiculous.

Yeah, I was kinda worried about that.

I remember you mentioning you teach. Not sure if you still do, but Im surrounded by family and friends who teach and they put in so much time and effort for not only their students but also their classrooms.

I have an update.

My wife had decided to appeal the decision since she felt she wasn't given a fair second assessment. Without really any warning the dude who runs it all called my wife at 2pm yesterday, said he was gonna come over to chat with her, and then did just that.

I was at work so I wasn't there with her. From my wife's perspective she feels like he cared more than the second assessor and seemed a lot more thoughtful.

We shall see what comes of it.

What would be the best case scenario?

Part of me wonders if the doctors who need to sign off on this just dont have the balls to actually make that sort of decision (or worse its ideological).

Do you mean that theyre personally against well whatever word is acceptable on CE?

Sorry, I dont live where one could do this with legal help, but I think everyone should have the right to do it, especially under these kinds of medical circumstances.

Dude, be careful of Christmas and New Years Eve.

Super easy to be enjoying the good times, then boom youre five pounds heavier next morning.

On a personal note, I just realized if I walk at least 10 miles a day everyday over different terrain, even if its spread throughout the day, I can eat almost anything and still be Ok. I dont like how my feet tend to always hurt, especially when its everyday, but it is doable and I didnt have to run or jog at all.

I'm fucking exhausted. Between work and providing care for my wife, I've basically been "on" since December 1st. I'm really looking forward to my wife coming home with me and us being able to rest. I haven't been sleeping especially well and I've definitely got a head cold.

Do you have any family or friends who are helping out or maybe you can reach out to?

Things can be easier with more support, even if its just emotional support. Please consider someone you trust, of course. Perhaps a professional can step in, if the govt or insurance can cover it.

The main hospital in our city is also a teaching hospital so the neurologists had students with them and apparently from what my wife remembers hearing, they said, "Well that's not good" and then kinda walked off.

Been having trouble getting back into groove snce thanksgiving weekend and the week following it. First day yesterday when i really think i didn't eat too many calories and ate within window.

I lost maybe 3 pounds in the days before Thanksgiving. During and after the holiday, I gained it back plus one. It pissed me off, so I lost it again but its basically a one step forward but two steps back scenario.

Don't give up. Keep moving forward.

From a personal perspective... I had to watch my grandad in hospital deteriorate over two months. He knew he was done and wanted to go home and die surrounded by his family but was denied this simple request... instead he lay in a bed in a plane white room with no stimulus slowly losing his mind and in pain until nature finally took it's course.

Damn, thats sad and mustve been frustrating, to say the least.

I know several doctors who suggested the patient go home because they wanted to be with family and there really wasnt anything else the hospital could do for them. Its such a traumatic thing to watch your loved one die, but I guess its bittersweet if they do it at home.

Btw, hospice care is a noble service. Im amazed by the strength of those people.
