I never understand that thinking. Following a group's policies, doctrines, traditions, whatever is kind of the whole point of being in that group in the first place. Sure, but the example was Catholics. That's a specific denomination of Christianity, with its own doctrines, traditions and hierarchy of leadership. If we are just talking about groups in general, then I agree with you that there could be various subgroups that deviate from their parent group. Islam, like Christianity, is like that, but if you're not going to follow the teachings of Sunni Islam, for example, then it wouldn't make sense to call yourself a Sunni Muslim.

When I was in High school, many moons ago, there was this drunken party going on one evening. Afterwards, a bunch of the people passed out, and some of the guys went on a mission around the house, and one of them was sticking his penis in passed out peoples mouths, taking pictures of it.

If that happened to some of the guys I used to hang out with, the guy doing the prank would probably be dead. They wouldn't even tolerate a gay guy making a pass at them, so I'm not sure how I would be able to talk them out of doing something very violent, even with the obvious legal consequences.

If I'm understanding the article, police aren't being banned from attending in uniform but rather they are being asked not to march in the parade in uniform. I still don't agree with it, but that's a big difference.

The only reason why the police are being asked is because the pride group does not actually have the authority to keep the police out, or at least not in uniform. The police could just be blunt and tell them to shut the fuck up and that they will not kowtow to any group, no matter what that group represents and what their agenda might be. Instead, the police, maybe because they are Canadian, are being cool about it and will still support them by complying.

There's tons of factors that differentiate a Chinese, Indian, or Nigerian immigrant from a kid in Baltimore, Chicago, New Orleans, etc.

Some of those immigrants barely speak English and their cultures are not exactly in synch with whichever US American community to which they move. Don't downplay the massive disadvantage these students face when they have to compete with US students, who are all privileged by comparison.
