The FB post is mostly correct and gives a spot-on definition of "privilege." Just one problem:

Nobody is saying that.

This is categorically false. Plenty of pseudo-news writers / social bloggers are misusing the term online. My first introduction to the concept of "privilege" was an unambiguously hostile one, delivered by a gender studies student who I went to college with. This is a problem.

It's not entirely White people's fault that so many of them are so defensive about this. The word already comes with connotational baggage of its own, and new negative extensions are being added by people who aggressively misuse the term. Ignoring and/or denying this fact isn't going to help White people understand the concept of modern racial inequality any faster.

The proper meaning of "privilege" may be obvious some people like the author of the FB post, but if we fail to acknowledge how the word has been weaponized in some circles then we run the risk of losing control of the term altogether.

That's pretty debatable

TFA was never going to please every Star Wars fan. There are a couple of things I could nitpick about the film (missed opportunity to develop Phasma at the battle on Takodana, a joke or two that didn't quite land well for me), but really the only legit criticism I've heard is that it replays too many beats from the OT. I disagree that they're too similar and too many, but I can understand where the criticism is coming from.

Even so, there's a pretty wide consensus that TFA got Star Wars back on track after 30+ years of of being MIA (or worse). TFA did a masterful job of establishing new characters and passing the baton, and I don't believe that anyone could have done better. None of the films that follow will be under as much pressure or scrutiny as TFA was.

My early guess is that The Last Jedi will be the film I come back to watch more often. But I think that The Force Awakens was faced with a much more difficult task. TFA had to relaunch the franchise, restore faith and make us care about new characters. It passed all those tests with flying colors.

But what is Sarah Huckabee Sanders' excuse? What kind of internal moral code (or lack thereof) allows a person to take the stage and promote autocracy? It's amazing that anyone can tolerate this. It really is.

Damn. I was sure no one was going to think of this.

(It's a legit answer, btw).

No piano made since the mid 70s has had ivory keys.

Yes but there were countless ivory-keyed pianos made before then, and pianos are not often thrown away or scrapped for parts.

I mean, the suggestion is a little bit tongue-in-cheek because a grand piano costs more than a car. But it's a perfectly legal way to buy a bunch of ivory, provided you have the money. Ivory keys aren't the easiest thing to find, but it can be done if you don't mind waiting a month or two.

Colleges provide structure, accountability, and certification. They provide access to peers, mentors, and facilities. It's nowhere near the same as simply reading on your own time.

Being able to learn on your own is a valuable skill which everyone should master. But learning at a university matched to your ability is far more efficient (albeit far more expensive too).

There's a bubble. Degrees are overvalued by the market (students and employers alike). But that doesn't make them worthless... quite the opposite, in fact.

It doesn't help that some people use the term in a derogatory way. My first introduction to the term was when one of my classmates misused it to say that I didn't really earn my place at our university. I didn't come around to accepting the term until several years later.

Now I'm questioning its effectiveness going forward. It seems to inspire a defensive reaction from many White people, even when it's used correctly. Maybe it isn't communicating what we want it to communicate in the clearest manner possible. Nobody wants to hear the word "privilege" used to describe them when they feel overworked and underpaid (https://thecurrentmoment.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/productivity-and-real-wages.jpg).

Maybe we should use a different word that doesn't come with all that connotational baggage.

There is no evidence of that. The rigging that is. You want there to be rigging.

The DNC argued in court that they don't owe anyone a democratic primary process.
The are emails detailing how the debate schedule was manipulated.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign for precisely this issue.
Shultz' replacement, Donna Brazile, was later caught sharing debate questions with Hillary's campaign.

There's no evidence of vote count fraud. There's plenty of evidence that everything else was rigged in favor of Clinton.

The length of war depends on how much the president cares about minimizing NK civilian death. Also, given the damage that NK could do to SK, I imagine that the US would favor options that end the war quickly. One way or another, I doubt that a war with NK would look like another Iraq.

Bernie handled Hillary with kid gloves (refusing to talk about her emails, for example), endorsed her at the convention and practically begged his supporters to fall in line.

On the other hand, Hillary's campaign leaked that Obama turban picture in the 2008 primary and her DNC cronies did everything they could to tip the scales against Bernie in 2016. Hillary has no room to complain about divisive campaigning.

It's not Bernie's fault that his progressive message made the democratic establishment look weak. It's not Bernie's fault that the DNC colluded with journalists and aspired to run an undemocratic primary. It's not Bernie's fault that 12% of his supporters refused to vote for the party that disenfranchised them.

Trump voters are responsible for electing Trump. But Hillary and her friends (formerly) in the DNC are 100% responsible for dividing the Democratic Party.

No, he was hit in the rear/left side of the car. An oncoming car couldn't do that. Most likely there were actually two left turn lanes and TC cut the turn too sharp from the outside lane-- easy to do when cities/counties don't keep up with maintenance and keep their lines painted.

BlueMonk, my advice to you: protect yourself. Whether you think it was your fault or not, whether you feel guilty or not, don't admit to anything or you'll get taken advantage of. Follow through and make the insurance companies (hopefully the other driver has one) pay.

Edit: and if you haven't done so already, call your insurance company IMMEDIATELY to let them know. Ideally you should call them at the scene, right after you copy down the other driver's license info and phone number (and insurance card info normally).
