This is a tricky issue. The libertarian Non-Aggression Principle fails to provide a complete answer, imo.

On one hand, I can't support mandatory vaccination because it seems like it's barely one step away from the dystopian future depicted in The Giver. While today's vaccinations are totally safe, mandatory vaccination sets a dangerous legal precedent.

On the other hand, failing to vaccinate your child is awfully close to crossing the line of child neglect. Some people would even argue that it does cross that line... and I can definitely see the logic in that.

There's also the risk of exposing others... does that constitute an act of aggression? It's not clear, imo.

I'm in favor of leveraging social pressure against antivax families in order to make them bear the cost of the risk they introduce to society, but the devil is in the details. I don't think that there's an ideologically pure solution to this problem.

It's hard to root for her over other characters who have struggled more, and struggled more recently. Dany's 10-minute walk with the Dothraki last season didn't feel like much of a hardship. And this season it feels like all of the tension is really about whether or not she'll follow in her father's footsteps, while her allies are being tortured and slaughtered.

At this point, it would be more satisfying for her to go out as a martyr. If she sacrifices herself to save the world, then all is forgiven as far as I'm concerned. It just doesn't feel like any of her current adversaries have done her an injustice that's begging to be made right. Dany's been coasting ever since Season 2.

Weird... I had a really easy time setting mine up. It was no more difficult than installing a digitally purchased game. I guess it varies by region and whether you get HBO as part of a cable package or not. But once you get past the initial installation, there's no way that HBO Now is more inconvenient than having to search for an illegal download for each episode.

You really should pay for GoT if possible, imo. HBO spends a ton of money to make that show what it is.

There's nothing wrong with locking content behind amiibo; it's the same concept as DLC. What's gross about this scenario is that difficulty mode options are being locked behind a paywall. That's like a restaurant charging extra to rent silverware.

Okay, wait a second... my understanding of the agencies was incorrect. JE19426, thank you for the persistent pushback, because you inspired me to dig past the nytimes article.

Here's what tripped me up, from the NY Times:
"The Advertising Standards Authority, an independent body, will then enforce those rules."

I assumed, from this statement, that the ASA had a legitimate enforcement mechanism (e.g. administrative law) behind them. But in fact, it looks like all they do is publish your name on their website and try to shame you if you break CAP's rules.

So, you're absolutely right that this isn't outlawing anything. It would appear that the CAP and ASA have no legal teeth after all.

"Britain’s advertising regulator, reacting to these ads and similar ones, announced Tuesday that new rules would be developed to ban advertising that promotes gender stereotypes or denigrates people who do not conform to them; sexually objectifies women; or promotes unhealthy body images."

Direct from the ASA report (page 63):
"CAP will develop new standards on ads that feature stereotypical gender roles or characteristics which, through their content and context, might be potentially harmful to people."
(link: https://www.asa.org.uk/asset/2DF6E028-9C47-4944-850D00DAC5ECB45B.C3A4D948-B739-4AE4-9F17CA2110264347)

The intention to ban stereotypes could not be made any more clear. If Britain's Committee of Advertising Practice follows this recommendation then the Advertising Standards Authority will start enforcing the rule later this year.

So yes, it very well could be outlawed, i.e. banned or made illegal through administrative law.

Except for the fact that neither the Committee of Advertising Practice, nor the Advertising Standards Authority, have the ability to make or enforce laws.

The CAP has the ability to make regulations. The ASA has the ability to enforce them. Regulations carry with them the force of the law; that's why they're enforceable. If an advertiser fails to follow the rules set by CAP then they do so outside of the protection of the law, as Britain's free speech law does not protect them.

City gov't is where I spend all of my time advocating IRL. Your voice definitely carries more weight in local politics.

Unfortunately, in my state (CA), cities increasingly have less and less ability to actually govern their own local affairs. The state is slowly but surely reclassifying everything as a "matter of statewide concern," meaning that city councils will eventually have no power to decide anything.

The latest affront to local governance: CA SB-649 which allows wireless telecom companies to install refrigerator-sized boxes on any public right-of-way or adjacent to any utility pole, without the consent of nearby property owners, the city or the county. Because if AT&T wants to put a huge utility box next to your property, that's supposedly a matter of statewide concern and not a local affair.

The more I've researched local politics, the more irritated I've become over how much the state is able to get away with because not enough people are paying attention. Get involved while you still can, while there's still something left.

This is yet another example of why hate speech is a critical component of free speech. It's stunning just how quickly "hate speech" broadens to include offensive speech, then "harmful speech." Pretty soon it's a crime to even depict traditional gender characteristics. Pretty soon your right to free speech has regressed a few hundred years. May as well toss out the British Bill of Rights and go back to the Magna Carta.

I like the thoughtful responses itt (not ignoring them), but I'll push back on this one. If I write assembly code that pseudorandomly overwrites its own instructions, then there's not really any human intelligence guiding the system's evolution. The computer is still deterministic in this scenario, but the algorithm could evolve in all sorts of directions which the human programmer couldn't have predicted.

To make a somewhat absurd (but not really) comparison... it's bit like arguing over whether life on Earth was seeded from Mars or whether it was planted by intelligent beings. Whatever the initial conditions may have been, we've taken on a life of our own. The Earth is now inhabited by a complex network of biochemical data processors.

It's possible to write self-modifying code.

Also, what is the human brain if not a deterministic computer that processes biochemical algorithms?

It all depends on Musk's meaning of the words "existential" and "human." I firmly believe that AI will change what it means to be human. It's inevitable that AI will eventually become better than us at everything, and before that happens we're going to need to adapt our social institutions and merge with our technology. I have no doubt that we're up to the task, but the politics of it could be tumultuous and there's a risk of global stratification, where some populations get left behind.

Musk is right to be concerned.

Professor is a weird way to describe a middle school teacher.

Especially since the article does not describe her as such

Yeah, teacher was a better word than professor, meh. I saw the video and the article and glossed over the fact that she's just a teacher rather than a professor, which is why I used the word professor.

Okay, honest mistake then, I guess.

Weird... another smear against UC Berkeley, which isn't actually affiliated with the story in any way. A few days ago, someone tried to pin a cancelled Richard Dawkins event on the university too.

I'm starting to wonder if this is some kind of coordinated narrative or if people are legitimately confused about Berkeley being a city and not just a university?

Looks great. Is Thanos summoning meteors and throwing them at earth or whatever in that scene?

Yeah, it's the very last shot before the title card. You can see the meteors for a split-second but the moon crumbling in the sky is cut off due to the angle this was filmed at.
