TopicWhy doesn't Trump just pardon himself and his whole staff?

1. The President can pardon federal crimes but not state crimes.
2. The power and limitations of the preemptive pardon are not well-establish by case law.
3. It would essentially be an admission of guilt and would likely result in impeachment.

To expound on point #3: the President cannot pardon himself from impeachment proceedings. However, if we assume that Trump is guilty then maybe there comes a time when he tries to cut his losses by issuing pardons and then resigning.

I always felt like it was underrated and not a lot of people watched it. Excellent series imo, I kept up with it while it aired. Nothing touches it as far as an authentic pirate series or film.

Agreed on all points. Very few entertainment outlets published reviews, forums had low participation, the show was repeatedly snubbed at the Emmys and the buzz online all seemed to come from a vocal minority of people who loved the show, like myself.

Black Sails is amazing-- second only to GoT, imo. The set design is phenomenal. The writing takes a few episodes to get going but later is some of the best in television. The music uses an instrument palate unlike anything I've ever heard before. The world feels authentic in a way that few shows manage to pull off.

If you're a hobbyist then by all means, experience music in whatever form you enjoy the most.

What I don't understand are professional musicians who take pride in not knowing how to read... and conversely (but more rarely), classically trained musicians who completely neglect their ear training. If you're serious about having a career in music yet stubbornly refuse to practice certain facets of your craft, you're only hurting yourself, imho.

While the DNC has been punished to some degree, disturbingly little is being done to prevent Russia from repeating their attack on our democracy.

To what degree has the DNC been punished?

And how did Russia attack our Democracy? According to all the available information, all Russia did was expose factual wrongdoings by Hillary Clinton. That seems quite a few echelons better than the MSM covering for Hillary Clinton by lying to the public, wouldn't you agree?

The DNC was pretty much forced (by the Democrat base) to clean house. And every so often when an opinion piece is floated out there (presumably by whatever is left of the Clinton machine) about Hillary running for mayor or Chelsea getting into politics, the progressive wing of the Democrat party shouts it down immediately. There may not have been any legal consequences, but political careers have been destroyed over this issue, and rightly so.

As for Russia... we know that they deployed botnets to spread propaganda, we know that Russian hackers have the capacity to hit organizations like the DNC, and we know that there were dozens of hacking attempts made against our voting software (all unsuccessful, this time). Our intelligence agencies have warned about Russia blackmailing President Trump and former members of his administration. There are ongoing investigations into money laundering, collusion and treason. This is all far worse than the rigging the DNC did in its own primary.

Wikileaks hasn't posted any false information to date, but it's also important to keep in mind that they became a de facto Russian propaganda mouthpiece in 2016. It's not really journalism when you're being fed information that's been selectively sorted to support a particular political cause.

I also doubt Wikileaks' integrity when it comes to the timing of its publications. To be clear: there's no question that the info dumps are timed to do maximum damage to Russia's opponents. The only unknown is exactly how much Wikileaks manipulates the timing, versus how much it's controlled by their sources.

In any case... let's not forget the big, colluding elephant in the room. There's time to discuss both topics, but when it comes to finite FBI and DOJ resources, the only election scandal that matters is Trump team's collusion with Russia.

Does that excuse the people in the leaks from any responsibility?

No, absolutely not. I complained about the DNC nonstop during the 2016 primaries. The DNC was eventually forced to clean house, and Clinton herself currently holds no office. Debbie Wasserman Schultz still holds public office in Florida and hasn't been held accountable to my satisfaction, but there's nothing I can do about that.

There's still cleanup to do and we need to make sure that this doesn't happen again, but... at the same time, there are much, much more pressing issues with our elections. While the DNC has been punished to some degree, disturbingly little is being done to prevent Russia from repeating their attack on our democracy.

Both lines of thought occupy my mind simultaneously, but given Russia's strategy of providing distractions, it's important that we always consider what our priorities should be. That's why I generally don't talk about the DNC's problems without also mentioning Russia's interference in the same breath. The latter is the bigger threat moving forward, and we can't allow ourselves to lose sight of it.

I don't see a case yet. Factors which contribute to the gender pay gap are well-documented and summarized here: http://freakonomics.com/podcast/the-true-story-of-the-gender-pay-gap-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast

The gap is almost entirely explained by matters of choice and cultural pressures, most of which take root long before a woman negotiates her salary with her employer. We have to be honest about that much, or else it will never change.

It's possible that there's gender discrimination at the BBC, but the accusers need to do better than just pointing to wage gap stats.

then why did HE tweet this?

Maybe Dawkins is making a tangentially related point. Multiple articles confirm that this was the decision of the radio station; none of them mention any involvement with the university. Also, the address of the event is off-campus.

Lastly, the article he tweeted is about Harvard and doesn't mention UC Berkeley at all.

I would agree with your point in the abstract; I wouldn't want unlicensed, unprofessional volunteers to go around building whatever they want.

However, two reasons why I don't think that your argument applies in this specific scenario:
1. The stairs, while imperfect, are still an improvement over the bare slope (safety-wise).
2. The city plans to modify the structure and bring it up to code, at far less cost than the original bids.

In California, cities aren't allowed to accept any bids that undercut prevailing wages or else the state pulls all discretionary funding, so you end up with ridiculous quotes like the one in the story. I think that there ought to be exceptions for certain types of work, for local / citizen volunteers who want to band together to improve their own community... but it'll never happen in my state because unions own the Assembly.

Maybe "entropy," in the sense that it's an unstoppable march towards disorder which will eventually unravel everything that "life" is working towards.

While I agree with you in theory, leaving that choice to parents can be very bad, as they put their children at risk. If they were to leave it as a choice the punishment for not getting your kids vaccinated should be on par with sever cases of child abuse. Only thing with that is you end up creating situations where kids could be taken away from their parents and thrown in to foster care, which doesn't help anyone.

The simplest solution is to just make it mandatory.

I sympathize with where you're coming from, and I agree that mandatory vaccination is far easier to implement than what I'd propose... but I also think that the harder solution is worth it to avoid laying a legal framework for the dystopian future depicted in The Giver.

Right now, most of us agree that vaccines are good and we want everyone to have them (though we may disagree on the means to accomplish our shared goal). But what happens if, in the future, the chemical compounds to be injected are legitimately up for scientific debate? Mandatory vaccinations set a dangerous precedent. It may seem safe now because the chemicals we're dealing with are well-vetted and scientifically sound. I don't necessarily trust things to remain that way forever with Big Pharma involved.

Are you also okay with the government no longer taxing them, then? Public services are either public or they're not. It'd be unfair to have means testing for public services that we all need.

I haven't given a lot of thought to the details, to be honest. I don't think they should pay for services which don't benefit them. Services which do confer an indirect benefit, but which a family isn't able to directly participate in, would maybe be discounted. Other services (roads, public utilities) where the family doesn't come into physical contact with others and doesn't put others at risk would continue to be made available and paid for as normal.

The calculation would be complicated and we'd have to hash out different answers for different countries. Ideally, tax codes shouldn't be as complicated as they are, in which case I could give you a much simpler, ideologically pure answer... but we've inherited messy systems which require messy, imperfect answers.

Still, I'll always take the solution that maximizes freedom over the one which doesn't, even if it isn't perfect.

But it must remain a voluntary decision at its core.

Why?

By default, I believe that an individual should have autonomy over his or her own body. It's immoral for the government to to forcibly inject chemicals into your body. It violates the non-aggression principle, to start with.

Admittedly, the NAP alone doesn't sufficiently handle all cases of child neglect. Obviously if a parent is starving his child then it's ethical for the government to intervene, separate the parent and offer the child food and water. However, force-feeding is another thing entirely (i.e. a form of torture which was inflicted on suffragettes, and more recently used in Guantanamo Bay).

I'm okay with governments exerting extreme social and economic pressures on antivaxxers and cutting them off from access to public services and spaces. I'm not okay with violating the sanctity of the individual in order to accomplish the end goal.

This is a bad solution to the problem. In fact, I'd say it's more morally repugnant than the antivaxxer who endangers others with his ignorance. It sets a disturbing precedent.

Instead, the government should strongly incentivize vaccines by making public / social services contingent upon them. Make it so costly to not get vaccinated that antivaxxer parents are forced to examine their beliefs and make a choice to either willingly join modern civilization or effectively exile themselves from society.

But it must remain a voluntary decision at its core.

Aside from The Wolf Among Us, Borderlands is probably the IP with the lowest built-in fanbase out of all the properties Telltale works with. Also, many of the gamers who played Borderlands for the gunplay might not be interested in a QTE interactive novel type of game.

So... underrated? Probably not. Undersold and under-the-radar of the casual gamer? Maybe.

People in Cali just aren't willing to commute, which is why property is so unreasonable. They're 10th in the nation for average commute time (and really, only because of LA). If they were willing to live another 10 minutes away the number of reasonably costed options would skyrocket.

It's not quite that simple. Yes there are a ton of retail-level jobs in bedroom communities (which bring down the average), but California is a nightmare if you have a white-collar job in one of the state's job centers, like Los Angeles.

I live 100 miles away from my job. If I drive in at 3:00AM then it only takes me 2 hours to get there. If I start driving around 7:00AM, it takes nearly 4 hours in one direction. And what do I get in return for the commute? My 3,000 sqft tract house in the desert only cost me half a million instead of a full $1M in LA.

(Full disclosure: I only commute twice per week. I would shoot myself if I had to make that commute 5 days per week in rush hour).

It's the same story in the Bay Area. California's infrastructure is shit. And the suburbs are still pretty expensive.

Westworld's writing was top-notch in the inaugural season and the premise has the potential to stretch across many, many seasons. The main disadvantage is that the show doesn't have thousands of pages of pre-written material to draw from. But if they can keep creating stories and don't run out of ideas, Westworld could easily fill the GoT void.

Hey genius. Fertility rates (in general) have fallen in the USA. 2017 is a new record low for the entire country. Check your facts.

People are leaving California in droves.

California's population has grown more (in percentage terms) than the US population over the last 10 years. There's a lot of migration but California nets more people coming into the state than leaving.

Who deserves the kill? Maybe Olenna. Cersei is pretty much directly responsible for wiping out House Tyrell's future. Comparatively, she's not as directly responsible for what happened to the Starks-- that's more the work of Jaime, Joffrey, Littlefinger, Tywin, Roose, Walder, and Ramsay. Cersei orders the death of Sansa's direwolf, but that's about it.

The most poetic choice would be Jaime.

More like, To Try and Entrap Someone That They'll Just Let Go.

This is a common misconception about the show-- one that I used to hold, myself. Some of the conversation snippets they highlight on the show certainly appear to be entrapment. But eventually someone on CE dared me to find evidence of entrapment in the actual chat logs (many of which have been posted online)... after an hour or two of reading through some truly disturbing conversations, I couldn't find anything. The chat decoys follow the law to the letter.

These guys initiate the pursuit, every time. They are predatory, through and through.

Southern California’s cost of living also continues to outpace wages, and owning or renting a house to start a family now often requires two household earners.

Putting aside the slanted breitbart bias, this bit is actually accurate and could very well be damaging to the future of the state.

He throws some sort of planetary object.

Yeah, technically we don't know since it's on an alien planet. My brain immediately went to "moon" because it has a moon-like texture (with craters I mean). However, it's also pretty large-- much larger than our moon appears in the sky from Earth-- so maybe that's why some people are calling it a planet.

No, unfortunately no. It will release around the time Thor: Ragnorok comes out. I think it will be October so they can hype up Thor a little more to boost sales.

I hope everyone gets to see it sooner, but I think that your prediction might be a smart bet. Potential Thor: Ragnorok spoilers:
The trailer opens with the GotG cruising through space, when a body hits their windshield (Rocket cracks a joke about using the wipers to get it off). The person is revealed to be Thor, wearing an outfit that looks kind of like his gladiator arena outfit from the Ragnorok trailer (but it was difficult to tell because it was torn up and Thor was in rough shape). This would seem to imply a lot about the ending of Ragnorok...

Hasn't been released yet as far as I know (most D23 footage is "exclusive" to the expo for a period of time, and the convention is notoriously good at keeping a lid on leaks). Here's hoping, though.

It was pretty amazing.

The last scene shows the Avengers fighting Thanos on an alien planet. Thanos raises his fist in the air (with just two infinity stones in the gauntlet)... then the moon cracks apart like glass and the fragments are hurled into the planet like mortar fire.

I do believe that eventually we will have to abandon capitalism but not for the reasons the TC states. I don't know how long it will take--maybe 100 years, maybe 500 years--but eventually we will have to go to some kind of socialist society, for two reasons

I would agree with you that Capitalism, as we know it, has some hard times ahead as we near the point where AI takes over all of our jobs. But Capitalism isn't the only system at stake... all of humanist economics and all Humanism in general is going to come to an end. We're going to have to merge with our technology in order to avoid being phased out... and once that happens, Dataism will rule the day. Dataist economic systems will compete and I suspect that a new economic system very similar to Capitalism will prevail.

To put it another way: once we change what it means to be "human," we'll also have to change what it means to be "Capitalist." But the transition could be pretty rough.
