He's condemned neo-Nazis, KKK, etc. plenty of times in the past.

Like that time he dodged having to condemn David Duke by pretending he didn't know who he was? The mental gymnastics you have to go through to pretend that Trump's response was normal... it's staggering, really.

But back to the topic at hand... SF bay area Antifa is indefensible. On at least three occasions this year, they've literally acted like terrorists: first when they showed up to Milo's event in paramilitary gear and tried to light fire to the building; second when they called in a threat against Ann Coulter a month later; third, this latest story. Three strikes-- in the same year, no less-- they're done. They stand for violence and they cannot be redeemed. And if other regional chapters of Antifa fail to proactively call out their bay area counterpart, then the entire national movement is complicit.

I wasn't as surprised as most people. I always believed in the 538 model which gave him a roughly 1-in-3 shot over the final weekend. I thought that it was the less likely outcome, but I knew that it was still very possible.

It was surreal, watching it play out though. I didn't really feel the weight of it all until the results started coming in. The whole thing still felt shocking, in a weird sense. Like, "wow, America actually just did this." My optimism for the future had a near-instantaneous drop that night, despite all the time I had had to prepare for the very real possibility of a Trump victory.

And on further reflection... I know we can all hold multiple thoughts in our heads and discuss more than one thing at once but... this little "news" item is so impressively unimportant that I'm honestly embarrassed I typed up this comment at all. Might at well post it now, I guess.

Uh huh. So you go from a left candidate to a libertarian and it's all on policy?

Uh huh.

Bernie on the 3 major issue frames:
Foreign policy: non-interventionist
Social policy: progressive
Economic policy: anti-corporatist and pro wealth redistribution

So I disagree with Bernie on wealth redistribution, and that's about it. It's a pretty big, fundamental disagreement, but there's still like 85% overlap with my libertarian leanings.

How are Gary Johnson's social policies progressive?

Bad choice of words on my part, considering how the term "progressive" has morphed into something completely new in the last couple of years. What I actually mean here is: classical liberalism as it pertains to civil liberties.

Bernie and GJ were both decades ahead on issues like marijuana, in the 90s, before it was widely considered to be politically viable.

I've only played it on the Wii U. The core gameplay is addicting. It doesn't evolve much past the 10-hour mark, yet the game offers hundreds of hours of content (plus extensive DLC). It's the ultimate "filler" game. I spent around 200 hours with it (and didn't come close to finishing the DLC maps) before I grew tired of the formula and needed a break. Your mileage may vary.

It's a great value and a good time-sink, imo.

On one hand, context matters. On the other hand, so does nuance.

I'm not going to accept a two-week moratorium on being White, patriotic and pro free speech every time the fucking KKK makes the news with one of their sickening rallies. There's a window of time were the only appropriate response to a Charlottesville type of event is to denounce white supremacy and then be quiet. However, these hostile reactions to the ACLU are starting to look more like a tribalist frenzy. You can't use "context" as an excuse to shut down nuanced critique indefinitely.

I'm also growing tired of keeping quiet about Antifa as people heap praise on them. No, they're not as bad as the KKK. No, they're not the most violent movement in the US. But the SF bay area chapter did show up at UC Berkeley earlier this year in full paramilitary gear and set fire to the campus.

It's a curious move to post the picture and then apologize. Makes me wonder what message they were going for originally? Obviously not a pro-Nazi one, given that it's the ACLU, although they have historically defended free speech rights for everyone, including the KKK.

I'm kind of put off by the hostile response. How long do I have to wait before it's okay to be White, patriotic and an advocate for free speech again? Because I'm all of those things, and still not a white supremacist. Judging by the reaction to this pic though, I'd probably be crucified if I posted anything about the 1A on Facebook right now. So... do I have to wait a month? Longer?

There's no moral justification for pirating goods that are available for purchase (or in production)... it's no different from stealing.

But I'm not going to hold it against anyone if they want to play Starfox 2 (or other SNES titles not available through a virtual console service). The artificial supply constraints on the NES + SNES mini are asinine. Nintendo can't willingly create such a mismatch between supply and demand and expect there not to be a black market to fill the gap.

Everyone's got their own opinion on this...

I'd say that the show gets better and better over the course of seasons 1 through 4. Seasons 5 and 6 take a dip, mirroring the lull in the source material. Season 7-- now 100% ahead of the books-- is moving at breakneck speed.

The show has made some smart changes and some not-so-successful changes. The most noticeable consequence of the show being ahead of the books, imo, is that Tyrion's dialogue (i.e. the voice and unfiltered wit of GRRM himself) has suffered immensely. The recently-aired S7E6 had fantastic dialogue all around though, so it's not like D&D are totally blowing it.

I think that the budget is the biggest problem right now. The story demands motion picture quality at this point and HBO is somehow delivering hours of it... but the show is also suffering under the reduced episode count this season. I can get over fast-travel, but we're also moving too fast for believable character development in some cases, now.

Over all though, season 7 represents a strong recovery from the somewhat sleepy two seasons that preceded it.

I don't think it's a stretch to guess that the NK is probably a greenseer or something similar. He was able to move while Bran was in the realm of magic. He probably has a good deal of prior knowledge about events to come

it's not a stretch, but it's a power that has barely been hinted at and was not hinted at in any way in the episode

the end result of it is they are inventing powers for the night king as plot demands them

which is bad writing

Barely been hinted at? It's the whole reason that Bran had to leave the cave and the 3ER, the last of the Children of the Forest, Summer, and Hodor all died.

We were also reminded one episode ago-- when the NK uses some kind of mental / anti-warging power to disband Bran's crows-- that the NK has abilities which match or exceed Bran's... and Bran can definitely seen the future (confirmed in Season 6 when he sees the wildfire exploding under the Sept of Baelor).

I assume you mean the White Walkers, or specifically the Night King... We've seen that he has some level of greensight (or equivalent) ability when he detects Bran spying on him in Season 6. We don't know the full extent of his powers but it's possible that he can see parts of the future and was waiting in order to lure out Dany's dragons. I mean... maybe it's just the nature of his character, but he seemed to be pretty unimpressed with the dragons and he was also curiously well-prepared with several javelins.

i think we are becoming lazier and lanzier per generation.

How people get this idea in their head when all trends suggest we are actually working harder than previous generations is bizarre.

A lot of Boomer parents think that their Millennial kids are lazy because they apply for comfortable service sector jobs and live at home until they're 30. Never mind that...
...backbreaking manufacturing jobs have all but disappeared
...nearly all employers require a college degree and college tuition has increased a thousandfold
...the cost of housing has outpaced wages for the last 30 years, worst of all in regional job centers
...Millennials are working more hours for less pay

We probably all have anecdotes about friends who graduated college in the middle of the recent recession, couldn't find work, got discouraged, and gave up on ever living a financially independent life from Mom and Dad. But these stories, while all too common, still defy the averages.
