Well first of all I play ranged so whoops. I can't really comment on the tankbuster stuff other than acknowledging it was often an issue, though a recoverable one.

And it is kind of an awkward fight to learn, DEFINITELY in a pug group, but once I got into a static there were so many uptime strats for that fight. Ultimately, I don't think our melee lost much uptime at all. I'm actually trying to wrack my brain thinking of where they would have lost uptime and I can only think of post-conflag stuff that you skip with damage and maybe that bit after second fireballs when moving to the safe zone?

Though, again, now that I think about it, tanks have to eat some uptime loss for positioning and tornados regardless so that is another thing you'd still be dealing with.

I'm a bit surprised by that. You'd think a soul wouldn't customize itself to a particular set of "equipment."

They weren't always disembodied souls! I believe the amorphous giants we see are just abstract interpretations, although they did wear cloaks and masks to obscure individuality.

I think Eden is very good as FF14 fanservice - although it probably doesn't hit if you aren't as entrenched. But I honestly love seeing the boss redesigns and the music remixes slap. The framing mechanism isn't too great but I honestly prefer it to the Omega raids, and I'm hoping Gaia has a satisfying story.

The Savage fights have also been pretty great so that's likely also coloring my opinion. But thinking about it, they really did not give the individual fights too much flavor in normal mode, compared to Alphascape (or even the last two Alex tiers) where most bosses had some major gimmick.

So maybe you're past this point now but it kind of depends on the Scions not really being able or willing to discourage people from heroism until they know for sure what the hell is going on as well as something that occurs towards the end of the patch that complicates matters.

Emet is one of (if not THE) most interesting villains in the entire Final Fantasy series, let alone 14 itself!

I'm kinda curious as to why you think the Warriors of Darkness might have been better. I also loved their villain arc in the Heavensward patches, and I'm not sure how they'd do that without rehashing or cheapening those moments. I enjoyed what they went with instead.

The Stormblood post-game is a bit weird. They cram in a ton of series fanservice (and also mythology fanservice?) and are pretty fun in terms of gameplay, but if you go in expecting a good story you'll be let down. Weirdly, the most interesting things about the Stormblood 8-man and 24-man lore to me are random background details that show up in other things!

Back when elements were a thing outside of Eureka your choice of god determined your base elemental resistances. They scrapped that system in the transition to Stormblood after somebody on the dev team realized what a stupid idea elements were in an MMO, but they never bothered removing the patron god choice.

I played back then and that still amounted to nothing!

And I guess I mispoke about the lore being undefined. I meant that they aren't a focus in the plot as you say - even though early on the game spends a decent amount of time and background convincing you they should be a big deal. Just another dropped plotline for the devs to dust off one day.

Yeah, the gods don't make too much of a difference and I assume they are a holdover from 1.0. The lore on them is also pretty undefined.

There is occasionally some dialog changes if you've leveled certain jobs or done certain quests but it's not too common

I was one of those newbies so hopefully I didn't disgruntle anyway too greatly. I've never used Party Finder so I'm not really sure how it works. I imagine you highlight certain classes you want to take in or something like that. THere's probably a form of pre-planning involved that you don't get with Duty Finder.

I've generally shied away from the optional dungeons. This is my first traditional MMO that I've played with some regularity and I never have much of an idea of what I'm doing and I hate to be a burden on others. I guess I'll wait on the Extreme stuff until I've upped my item level significantly.

PF is a little intimidating at first but it's really just used to put more specific parameters on things and to advertise getting groups together for specific content. Like unsynced as we said, or for learning parties for newbies vs clear/farm parties that don't want people who have not completed the fight. People don't tend to get too needy about specific jobs beyond making sure there are no duplicates and getting at least one of each melee/ranged/caster DPS (since those things affect party buffs and Limit Break meter). So it's pre-planning like you said but not too intense, it's meant to facilitate grouping with randoms but for things you want a bit more control over than duty finder gives you.

Yeah, extreme fights are the first tier of hardcore content. If you are doing them at-level you can expect to have to look up a guide and spend hours dying to them before your first clear with random.

Typically for older ones, people will form groups in party finder to unsync them (going in at max level) which makes them a joke.

Spamming retainers, maps, and just playing the game for a long period of time starts to add up with roulettes/dailys/challenge log and stuff

If you want to make millions fast then you can do some around new patch time but the other stuff lets you coast

You can make money at any level if you're smart about it. For example one trick is to bulk craft a bunch of in-demand intermediate mats that people use a lot of but are too lazy to craft themselves, like ingots or whatever. It used to be stuff used in leves but I dont think anyone does those anymore so I'd look out for things used in Restoration turn-ins instead. You can also unlock the master crafter books, some of the cosmetics might go for money but those are always competitive and some are crapshoots. Oh, and look for any nice furniture you can make.

There isn't going to be a point where this magically changes, btw. When you hit max level you get access to more stuff, but crafting combat gear to sell is always a trap unless you can get in within the first few days. Crafting/gathering gear used to sell decently though maybe that is different now that so many people have leveled crafters. You just have to learn how to play the market.

If you were leveling CUL or ALC it's a different story because max level pots and food always sell at a decent rate, the margins aren't huge but it's a consistent income source.

Edit: I guess for specific recommendations check out how much the level 51-53 crafting and gathering accessories go for? Those used to be important while leveling but maybe they don't matter now that everything is turbo fast.

If there is it was before my time and I started in Heavesnward. It was possibly useful in one of the Coil add fights but I dunno. All the crowd control like sleep and bind is job-specific and the devs make sure that specific jobs aren't required. And normal dungeons have never been so difficult as to need that stuff.

Sell any crafting/gathering ones you have now, there's new gear. For battle materia yeah 5.4 should be the high but it's way more plentiful to begin with

Some pretty spicy additions in Amonkhet Remastered coming to Arena. Sphinx's Rev, Wrath of God, Collected Company, Thoughtseize!

I for one would love to jam CoCo in Historic, though I dont know if the CMC 3 or less creature pool is good enough yet. Being able to hit Uro and Rhonas is value and Elves probably makes use of it at least.

Came back recently and caught up MSQ wise. Also cleared normal Eden in its entirety (E1-E8). Very fun fights.

Really loved the FF8 callbacks in Eden. Cmon, gimme that remix of The Extreme when the third Eden tier comes out

I'm kind of expecting the dark force to be Ultimecia in some form but also the plot is being done by Nomura and I'm not sure he'd do that to his new goth waifu or if the writers want to focus mostly on Eden itself for the lore

They did this too though! Devoid cards have a special frame! It's similar to the Eldrazi frameless cards but with a neat color pattern at the top.

WotC has been really into using unique frames to signify card themes since Theros so it says a lot about either their frame design, Devoid itself, or both that it's so easy to overlook.

That's a fault of set design more than the mechanic. When Ghostfire was released in Future Sight it received a bit of love from RDW/burn players because it being colorless did do something - it let the player kill creatures with Protection from Red without really having to change their game plan. What WotC failed to do was make it matter that those spells were colorless. Personally, if I were designing a new set that featured Devoid I'd really take that as a challenge.

Well, what are the other design possibilities for the mechanic? If it's just that it gets around Protection from/Hexproof from it's just a pretty straightforward power increase because it can ignore mechanics sometimes, not a good mechanic. And filling up a set with protection and hexproof to make Devoid matter sounds miserable.

In theory you could make a set that cares a lot about the colors of your cards and then include Devoid as strong cards with a tradeoff that don't contribute to that plan. Like imagine if a Theros set had tweaked Devotion and Devoid so that your Devoid cards don't contribute to your devotion, but they'd be stronger in other ways. But while that could be an interesting design it doesn't sound particularly fun, I dunno.

The Devoid vs Colorless Matters disparity in my mind is because it feels like a really boring way to increase the amount of colorless cards in the set when they can just design a normal set and then go "ok these cards are colorless now because Devoid."

Temur Rec Field in Historic is a blast to play but I am leaning towards it being banned after the Open solves the format.

Also it's just godawful in BO1 so I'm definitely not entering. I can't imagine it being a good choice unless the meta eats itself and becomes mostly anti-anti-field decks.

Yeah I agree, I don't doubt Allies are returning because that was something they know they missed in BFZ. But also, Allies are a tribe, not a mechanic, and MaRo is generally pretty deliberate about describing things like that. He says it's a mechanic they "brought" to Zendikar and tweaked.

Personally I'm convinced it's going to be a variant of Explore. Pretty popular mechanic, easy to reflavor or tweak mechanically to work better on Zendikar. and they could buff it by making it put lands into play to make Landfall and ramp decks even better

I was also underwhelmed with Ori 1 for a lot of those reasons but Ori 2 is fantastic, and basically what I thought the first game would be like from all the praise I heard. Fixing the combat is a big deal and improves the pacing and flow so much. In the first game it would just get in the way of the fluid movement.

Like I started Witcher 3 and it's sometimes entertaining but the main character sucks and the whole atmosphere is bargain fantasy. There's all this lore and dialogue and a huge (HUGE) world and I just don't care. The writing in the side quests is fine but like there's actually too much here without having a decent main plot.

So I love Witcher 3 and I'll say the game does a massive disservice to newcomers by leading with Velen and then expecting you to do the Bloody Baron storyline (which is...divisive to say the least) first when the game opens up. That is not where all the best writing is and the other two main objectives (Novigrad and Skellige) are a lot more interesting and fun, and also have better sidequests. But maybe you got there and still feel that way and this is moot.

I had played the first two games so when I played 3 I went straight to Novigrad to see all the returning characters and it honestly did wonders for the pacing imo.
