https://opencritic.com/game/9592/ghost-of-tsushima

85 average so far through 79 reviews.

Positives
  • Beautiful Open World - The game's diverse world is filled with beautiful visuals and vistas
  • Sense of Style - Ghost of Tsushima commits to its samurai style in both its storytelling and combat with great success.
Negatives
  • Repetitive Side Quests - As the game goes on, some of its side activities and gameplay loops begin to feel repetitive.

A lot of reviews seem to compare it to the more recent Assassin's Creed games, but with samurais.

I will say for me personally having Kazuya Nakai as the voice actor for the main character is a huge plus

I'm hearing mixed things about the story, too. It sounds like a solid game but nothing too special.

What's the gameplay like?

The best thing about sucker punch is they generally have really fun to toy with advancement systems.

Hearing "it's assassins creed" is really deflationary

there's just a few things lining up into place all at once. Previous leakers who were correct about the March mini direct saying it'll be July 20th and four unannounced Switch game SKU's popping up in the Gamestop database which usually happens right before a Direct happens.

I feel like the blowback I'm seeing for this game in some places is a little wierd. Sounds like it's exactly the kind of game it said it was gonna be, don't know why people are surprised? I personally haven't played one of these in forever (Far Cry 4), but I guess for people who play all the big games there's a lot of fatigue.

I think there was some hope that it would be high art and not just a pretty good Assassins Creed type thing. Considering how long its taken to come out and how often we get AC games, just being like one of those is kinda underwhelming.

still if I want one of those, im more likely to get Ghost than an AC because it should be somewhat more distinct than another Ubisoft game

but on the third hand, Watch Dogs 3 is soonish and that appeals to me more. I can really only do one of these sorts of games per year.

I have no faith in an Ubisoft open world game to deliver a unique experience anymore.

Far Cry 5 was a truly uninspired, dull game after the previous 2 had been so appealing.

You forget how good the first gameplay reveal looked! It almost salvaged Sonys 2018 E3. So I think people were expecting more there.

i felt like it was cool but not cool enough for how much of it there was

i got 2/3 through and just got bored, but before that I was having a good time. Its a good dumb shit simulator. Youll just be talking to a normal person and then suddenly an eagle shows up and attacks them out of nowhere and its great.

on the other hand, Watch Dogs 2 was awesome and a little closer to a GTA than a standard Ubisoft open world. I think 3 could end up really good.

I'm not a GTA fan, which may be why Watch Dogs didn't appeal to me either.

The worst thing about FC5 may have been how they fucked with the leveling and other RPG mechanics. Like, I don't mind changing things up, but it was just awful, truly confusing as to why they thought it was any good. I feel like they changed it just to differentiate it from the last couple but had no idea what to actually do.

Im not saying the demo was misleading. Im saying it allowed people to set their expectations much higher than they would otherwise have been because it hinted at (or let people imagine) something much grander. So people might be a little underwhelmed.

I guess where I disconnect from that expectation is where they literally started it with a horse ride through an open world.

It was then that I immediately assumed it was an open world game with all the trappings.

I feel like I'm completely over open world games other than BoTW

Like I started Witcher 3 and it's sometimes entertaining but the main character sucks and the whole atmosphere is bargain fantasy. There's all this lore and dialogue and a huge (HUGE) world and I just don't care. The writing in the side quests is fine but like there's actually too much here without having a decent main plot.

RDR2 - beautiful game but again it's somewhat boring. I think I'm just about-facing away from sandbox/freedom games and back towards more linear story-driven gameplay (note that I'm not advocating for hallways/corridors, but just more focus)

Y'know this is probably the BIG one for me that's making my opinion on this a little screwed, because of how much I hated that game. Without that looking over me as a big open world investment from the last couple years, I'm a bit thirstier for it.

RDR2 is in the same boat. For me I haven't given a shit about an open world release since...FC5, which I didn't like, so FC4 actually was the last one that satiated me.

You'd think just by virtue of how trendy open worlds have been and the sheer number of them that have been pumped out there would be more than a very small handful of actually good ones. (BotW is a great game but a bad open world, for the record. Perhaps not coincidentally most games with good open worlds are only good because their worlds are!)

So I love Witcher 3 and I'll say the game does a massive disservice to newcomers by leading with Velen and then expecting you to do the Bloody Baron storyline (which is...divisive to say the least) first when the game opens up. That is not where all the best writing is and the other two main objectives (Novigrad and Skellige) are a lot more interesting and fun, and also have better sidequests. But maybe you got there and still feel that way and this is moot.

I had played the first two games so when I played 3 I went straight to Novigrad to see all the returning characters and it honestly did wonders for the pacing imo.

I'm in Skellige now. I'm still playing but mostly because it's a pandemic and I'm unemployed, tbh. If I actually had a job/responsibilities/other games in my backlog I probably would've dropped it.

There's not really anything wrong with the story/writing; compared to other wrpg's it's like literature, to be honest. I just don't get sucked in. Some quests are certainly more interesting than others but the plot's conflict is too slight currently. The game hasn't really made me care about Ciri or the Wild Hunt but expects me to?

Anyway, not to derail the thread. I'll echo the earlier posters who praise infamous and Spider-Man PS4. Not a huge open world and fun movement. Strong narrative that isn't overwhelmed by side quests.

Decided to suck it up and deal with the default controls... died quite a few times due to my muscle memory hitting R1 after dodging, which of course just results in me standing there motionless for a solid second before realizing oh yeah that's not the right button but too late there's a sword in me
