I tracked down the unity task force recs Bernie and co put together and if it follows that there isn't. It isn't anti-nuclear but it also isn't a focus. Basically the stance it takes as I read it is to massively upscale solar and wind to meet immediate short-term goals while investing in researching next-gen nuclear solutions but not actually building plants. Which seems like the correct play to me, building nuclear plants takes way too long.

Yeah there are downsides to building new nuclear (I think they could be part of the solution, but it would probably require getting rid of the parts of the red tape that are basically NIMBYism rather than actually necessary for safety), but shutting down existing safely operating nuclear plants is dumb and actively undermines the goal of reducing emissions.

Good to hear, though; I'm sure this update to his plans is based on the task force's recommendations.

Probably the unis complaining about how much money they'd lose (International students seriously pay the bills for schools), Trump hearing "losing money" and listening to the last person who talked to him on the subject?

I assume there were probably also R governors/senators who told him how much it'd fuck over their states if their universities took that big of a hit

I think another big motivation for it was to try and force colleges to hold in-person classes (this policy happening simultaneously with Trumps insistence that schools reopen in the fall).

For some people online classes work fine, but I think they're less effective for most students (particularly if you don't have great self-discipline). That said, in person classes would not be safe in most of the US, and I would not feel safe teaching in person.

The students I spoke to last semester seemed to strongly prefer traditional in-class instruction. They disliked the "covid semester" despite the boon it provided to their grades.

Online classes are mostly bullshit. But they are cheaper in theory, so it should lower tuition. But it doesnt. If the class is some absurdly easy course online is fine. But any class with some decent complexity having people to interact with in a room is much more efficient and in general better for learning

But ya college is also about actually meeting people to build connections with. Then again when you walk around a campus these days (well pre covid) the amount of people who walk from class to class with their headphones in and no communication with anyone is just pathetic. It was pretty bad in my day, im sure its even worse now

yeah, i never made any good friends in uni so this was never a huge deal for me. the friendships i developed in high school turned out to be much stronger. i'm sure i'm in the minority on that one, though.

i do think in-person classes are better for smaller classes with lots of interaction. but for classes that are just a professor lecturing for 2 hours with 0% interaction, i don't see why you absolutely have to be there in person.

started realizing this when i took science of philosophy classes - they did offer those classes in-person so you still had the option of attending them if you wanted to, but they also uploaded all of the lectures online in audio form. i ended up never going to any of those classes. i just studied at home and thought "man this is so convenient, why the hell don't they do this for more classes?"

You can continue to jump through hoops to defend his racism if you want, but you won't have many allies in your defense here.
