I tracked down the unity task force recs Bernie and co put together and if it follows that there isn't. It isn't anti-nuclear but it also isn't a focus. Basically the stance it takes as I read it is to massively upscale solar and wind to meet immediate short-term goals while investing in researching next-gen nuclear solutions but not actually building plants. Which seems like the correct play to me, building nuclear plants takes way too long.

It was overshadowed by the tax cases but the other case SCOTUS ruled on today to close out the term was a 5-4 decision (Gorsuch + Liberals) that ruled that nearly half of Oklahoma is considered a Native American reservation because Congress granted that land in the 1800s and despite the repeated assaults on the sovereignty that have ensued to this day it never actually dissolved that decision and thus must keep to its word.

Speaking of Doors of Stone, I'm gonna need someone to explain Kingkiller to me. I only read the first one and it was enjoyable enough but basic as fuck. It's the kind of story I'd expect a high schooler to write about their DnD character, except Rothfuss is a good enough writer to make an extremely bland story somewhat entertaining.

Are the second book and novella much better? Am I missing something? Why is this so hyped?

9-0 decision against faithless electors in the Electoral College; rule that States may enforce that electors vote as the State provides, under pain of penalty if need be.

I've followed this a bit and expected this outcome but it still feels like a crazy ruling to me.

I understand that if they don't rule this way, the entire EC system breaks down. But it's darkly amusing to me because it feels like it goes against the actual intent of the electoral college of letting electors make the final call. But even the conservatives can justify it since the constituon doesn't explicitly forbid the states from enforcing a vote. It's just a complete nonsense system.

Anyways, now that we have bipartisan support for the Electoral College, I hope people can understand that when people call to abolish it, it isn't just to help Democrats, since the liberal justices love it too.

I think this is a loaded question because the leap directly to death penalty without exploring other options is weird. So far we've only discussed three (prison, rehabilitation, death), but there could be more. But I'm also not the target of this thought experiment!

Okay, see, your hypothetical relies on us still using our current immoral prison system. But also, this hypothetical involves us knowing the person is 100% guilty and 100% unable to be reformed. And there is no possible way to know if someone can be reformed if we are still using incarceration as it exists now. So that can't be true.

I've been grappling with that, jakyl. In a world of abolition and intense prison reform, we shouldn't be so quick to throw someone behind bars and call it a job well done.

But the kinds of people who fraudulently stole millions of dollars from public funds should be punished in a way such that they can never return to a normal life. I don't think that means they should be locked up at even more taxpayer expense, but I don't want them to ever feel comfortable or content again.

I'd say you could seize their assets for public use and that would solve your dilemma. But the reality is that aspect of criminal justice and especially civil asset forfeiture are also corrupt in different ways. So those kind of need fixing if we are going to keep using them.

See also: what to do with killer cops if you also want to abolish prisons, or people who refuse to be held accountable. There's a lot of debate because these are things most societies don't have any tools to deal with.

Okay, honest, probably stupid question: What does diplomatic action look like without warfare of some kind (including both economic via sanctions and cyber warfare)? What leverage does the US possibly have besides that? Russia got kicked out of the G8 for annexing Crimea and it's not like they decided to give it back it over that. The bathroom thing is overblown in my opinion because it seems obvious they just weren't thinking about it. Like he didn't intentionally take a camera into the bathroom to be edgy, his cameraman was just stupid and followed him in. I hesitate to call it a far-right conspiracy theory because it also has a decent amount of traction with independents, particularly in Black communities. I'd compare it to something like anti-vax which has broad reach across party lines for weird reasons. Only in this case it aligns with a main conservative focus.

And much like anti-vaxxing has some of its roots in the Tuskegee experiments, this one has roots in the founder of Planned Parenthood being a eugenicist (which was pretty much the style at the time). But it's an oversimplification that's been twisted out of control and ignores things like Black women having less access to abortion anyways which would disprove the entire theory.
