Twitter used to get content from celebrities for free. It's now asking celebrities, journalists, and government officials to pay for the status symbol now primarily held by crypto scanners and people with strongly held views on something they call "Western Civilization." It has marketed this product as a way to make the liberal elites cry.

Is it any wonder the notable people are skeptical of the value of aligning themselves with this effort?

The will of the people has little relation to how we are governed.

It seems obvious to me that the police are going to selectively refuse to do their jobs as a means of putting pressure on the incoming progressive mayor, much like their SF counterparts did to Chesa Boudin.

Average attendance is a poor metric for popularity given the differences in venue size, number of games, etc. It is a much better idea to look at television viewership, not least because this is where leagues make a majority of their revenue.

Some have, yes! But league average attendance is around 20k for a significantly shorter season than NBA, NHL, or MLB. More relevant than attendance is television viewership, where even MLS Cup rarely cracks 2 million viewers (compare that to the average Stanley cup game, at ~5 million, or World Series game, at ~11 million).

I would argue there's a strong case to be made for soccer being more popular than hockey at this point, even if no individual soccer league is as popular as the NHL. That quibble aside

NFL: Hard for me to imagine its future being brighter than its present. I'm not even convinced the injury stuff will decrease its popularity any, it's just that it's a dominant force and there's nowhere for it to go.

NBA: As the game grows in popularity internationally, there's a lot of potential for it.

MLB: I'd love to see it lean in to the popularity of the WBC and the international game, but I'm skeptical that MLB's owners are gonna make the right decisions.

NHL: Eh.

I remember playing most of the first game with Max (partly because I was too stupid to bother with indirect units).

Thousands of children have ended up in punishing jobs across the country working overnight in slaughterhouses, replacing roofs, operating machinery in factories all in violation of child labor laws, a recent Times investigation showed. After the articles publication in February, the White House announced policy changes and a crackdown on companies that hire children.

But all along, there were signs of the explosive growth of this labor force and warnings that the Biden administration ignored or missed, The Times has found.

Again and again, veteran government staffers and outside contractors told the Health and Human Services Department, including in reports that reached Secretary Xavier Becerra, that children appeared to be at risk. The Labor Department put out news releases noting an increase in child labor. Senior White House aides were shown evidence of exploitation, such as clusters of migrant children who had been found working with industrial equipment or caustic chemicals.

As the administration scrambled to clear shelters that were strained beyond capacity, children were released with little support to sponsors who expected them to take on grueling, dangerous jobs.

In interviews with The Times, officials expressed concern for migrant children but shifted blame for failing to protect them.

H.H.S. officials said the department vetted sponsors sufficiently but could not control what happened to children after they were released. Monitoring workplaces, they said, was the job of the Department of Labor.

Officials at the Labor Department said inspectors had increased their focus on child labor and shared details about workers with H.H.S., but said it was not a welfare agency.

And White House officials said that while the two departments had passed along information about migrant child labor, the reports were not flagged as urgent and did not make clear the scope of the problem. Robyn M. Patterson, a White House spokeswoman, said in a statement that the administration was now increasing scrutiny of employers and reviewing its vetting of sponsors.

This is funny because while most people would assume I was talking about a device to read books, you're posting as if this topic refers to the Game Boy Advance peripheral of the same name.

I can tell myself it's because of some superiority in paper books, but mainly I just like being able to point to them on a shelf.

I've had a Dell for ~2 years now, really served me well.

I've adopted a philosophy about this, based in my experiences with my last couple jobs: if I go into a job thinking I'll enjoy the work itself, inevitably there will be bad, unpleasant, unenjoyable days, and I will grow to resent the job. So now I go into a job for what it enables me to do with my own time.
