I would argue there's a strong case to be made for soccer being more popular than hockey at this point, even if no individual soccer league is as popular as the NHL. That quibble aside

NFL: Hard for me to imagine its future being brighter than its present. I'm not even convinced the injury stuff will decrease its popularity any, it's just that it's a dominant force and there's nowhere for it to go.

NBA: As the game grows in popularity internationally, there's a lot of potential for it.

MLB: I'd love to see it lean in to the popularity of the WBC and the international game, but I'm skeptical that MLB's owners are gonna make the right decisions.

NHL: Eh.

The only way I can see the NFL falling off is if kids stop participating in youth leagues in large enough numbers due to injury concerns. I would also think the NFL trying to put football on every night of the week would hurt the quality and popularity of the game but the fans would likely eat it up as well.

NFL will decrease in popularity over time as the pool of talent shrinks from parents not allowing their kids play due to safety concerns. Its also so saturated in the US and has to compete with soccer internationally which is a battle it cant win.

NBA Im not really sure where itll expand to. Basketball is already internationally popular and about as popular as itll get in the US.

MLB put in rules to speed up the game so maybe well see some resurgence. But its an uphill battle considering the average fan is older than the other sports.

NHL has potential as the least popular of the 4 currently with a lot of room to grow imo.

I personally think soccer grows faster than the rest for the foreseeable future.

NHL is a little bit too big. Could probably stand to cull maybe four teams, but I don't know what the other three would be after Arizona.

MLS has the most room for growth, as 'Mericans slowly stop disliking soccer past middle school.

world cup is coming to North America next so soccers popularity is only going to go up over the next few years all while mls continues to expand

mlb needs to find a way to make the wbc every other year instead of every three years. this year aside where it was incredible, the wbc has always been great but its too spread out between appearances, its a tournament that needs to keep fans engaged and having it every other year will do that

Only one of the big four with an actual global reach and it's still getting more popular.

NBA I think has the easiest path of growth. I think they are the most profitable in 50 years.

MLB has second easiest path. 162 games is a lot to make money. And baseball is actually growing quickly globally. Embrace that shit.

NFL needs a new major market. They are going after Europe, obviously, I think I would have gone after India. With only 1 game a week, they have best opportunity to be a truly global league.

NHL is fucked. It needs huge TVs to be good, but everyone under 30 consumes video on their phone. And global warming fucks them too.

Since you said has the potential to grow the most, I guess I will say the NBA.

The NFL is and will remain at the top, but i don't think it's possible to get much more popular. It will just to continue to be at the top and print money.

NHL just isn't that popular outside of certain markets, don't know that much can fix that.

MLB is actively being consumed by the cancerous tumor that is Rob Manfred, hopefully he will either drop dead pretty soon or finally decide he has enough money in his pockets and mercifully retire.

While I don't personally enjoy it, the NBA seems to be mostly competently run while still having room for growth.

MLB banned extreme shifts and added a pitch timer, so games have been pretty robust. I think one nine-inning game for Detroit was under two hours recently -- not bad. The WBC really showed a lot of talented folks, too, so hopefully some will make their way over to the big leagues.

Oh look no mention of Major League Soccer in this flopic.

The MLS is the THIRD most popular sport in the US. It is absolutely hammering Ice Hockey and Basketball for attendances. Some MLS games have had over 70,000 in attendance at certain games. I once saw part of a Kansas City Wizards game and the stadium was packed.

So my choice goes to MLS. More teams are planned to enter over the next couple of years and it just seems to be going from strength to strength.

I see a couple of others have also picked Soccer (using Soccer instead of Association Football as this is a US sports thread).

Some have, yes! But league average attendance is around 20k for a significantly shorter season than NBA, NHL, or MLB. More relevant than attendance is television viewership, where even MLS Cup rarely cracks 2 million viewers (compare that to the average Stanley cup game, at ~5 million, or World Series game, at ~11 million).

Probably Soccer and basketball. Both sports have a low cost of entry you just need a ball and a hoop or goal. Not loads of equipment like other sports.

Another major factor is both sports have women's leagues so everyone can play so the sports appeal to everyone. Not just guys like football.

WRONG!

It is FOURTH if you include the CFL (Canadian Football League) but take that out and it means it is THIRD in The US behind NFL and MLB.

The MLS is the SEVENTH most popular league in the world.

It's average attendance of 20,000 is bigger than almost every club in Scottish Football. The only clubs it doesn't beat are Scotland's powerhouses of Rangers and Celtic.

Whether you like it or not MLS has really caught on in The US. Also I see they are other Professional Soccer leagues in The US.

Average attendance is a poor metric for popularity given the differences in venue size, number of games, etc. It is a much better idea to look at television viewership, not least because this is where leagues make a majority of their revenue.
