https://www.mediaite.com/online/ny-times-denies-reporter-broke-into-corey-stewart-staffers-home-his-claim-is-entirely-false/
GOP Senate nominee Corey Stewart claimed New York Times reporter Stephanie Saul broke into one of his staffers homes for a story; the newspaper of record responded by calling the allegation entirely false.

Mr. Stewarts claim about our reporter is entirely false, said New York Times spokesperson Ari Bevacqua in a statement to Mediaite.

She continued: Ms. Saul went to an address for Landrum Associates in Woodbridge looking for Mr. Landrum. She was told by a woman who opened the door that he was not present. She left a note with the woman for Mr. Landrum asking him to call. At no time did she enter the premises.

On Wednesday, Stewart accused Saul of breaking into the Woodbridge, Virginia home of campaign aide Brian Landrum, who was recently revealed to have been part of a group chat created to plan a white supremacist rally for the anniversary of last years deadly Unite the Right event.

Landrum claimed the campaign is working with police investigators, and look forward to justice being served for the alleged break in, but according to the Washington Post, no files were charged by Thursday night.

Additionally, while no property was damaged or person was harmed during the alleged incident, the New York Times reporter was doxxed by the alt-right website Big League Politics after the Stewart campaign presumably sent the blog a note that Saul left at Landrums home which included her personal cell phone number. Numerous Twitter users have already started encouraging others to harass Saul by spamming her with unsolicited text messages and phone calls.

When asked by Mediaite about the doxxing, a New York Times spokesperson said the paper takes the safety of our reporters very seriously and we have expanded measures to protect our journalists against the overall backdrop of increased threats and verbal attacks.

Stewart, who also has known ties to numerous white supremacists, Stewart has used the alleged incident to accuse the far left media of attempting to hurt his run against Democrat Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia.

The fake news media will stop at nothing to destroy Republicans, as weve seen with their coverage of President Trump and others over the last few years, Stewart said in a statement on the alleged incident. Far left media from New York to Richmond have been working overtime to invent wild stories to try to give advantage to Tim Kaine, and now theyre breaking into our teams homes in pursuit of their narrative.

This guy's gonna get blown out by Tim Kaine. Imagine.

I look forward to Ocasio-Cortez explaining how she intends to fund literally anything.

Because so far, every time she's been asked, she throws out a feel good answer about how underprivileged people deserve better lives just because. Which sounds nice, in a post-scarcity fantasy world.

This continued action damages Americas legitimacy as a force for good, creates new generations of potential terrorists, and erodes American prosperity. In times when were told that theres not enough money, Republicans and corporate Democrats seem to find the cash to fund a $1.1 trillion fighter jet program or a $1.7 trillion-dollar nuclear weapon modernization program. The costs are extreme: the Pentagons budget for 2018 is $700 billion dollars: to continue fighting an endless War on Terror and refighting the Cold War with a new arms race that nobody can win.

Children less than a year old appearing in court
https://khn.org/news/from-crib-to-court-trump-administration-summons-immigrant-infants/

The Trump administration has summoned at least 70 children under 1 year old to immigration court for their own deportation proceedings since Oct. 1, according to new Justice Department data provided exclusively to Kaiser Health News.

These children, who may be staying with a sponsor or in a foster care arrangement, need frequent touching and bonding with a parent and naps every few hours, and some are of breastfeeding age, medical experts say. Theyre unable to speak and still learning when its day versus night.

For babies, the basics are really important. Its the holding, the proper feeding, proper nurturing, said Shadi Houshyar, who directs early childhood and child welfare initiatives at advocacy group Families USA.

The number of infants under age 1 involved has been rising up threefold from 24 infants in the fiscal year that ended last Sept. 30, and 46 infants the year before.

The Justice Department data show that a total of 1,500 unaccompanied children, from newborns to age 3, have been called in to immigration court since Oct. 1, 2015.

Roughly three-fourths of the children involved are represented by a lawyer and they have to make their case that they should stay in the United States.

Officials who review such deportation cases say most children under 1 cross the border with a parent and their deportation cases proceed together.

But some of the infants were deemed unaccompanied only after law enforcement separated them from their parents during the Trump administrations zero-tolerance immigration policy. The children were sent to facilities across the U.S. under the supervision of the Department of Health and Human Services.

This is to some extent a crisis of the creation of the government, said Robert Carey, who previously headed the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which takes custody of unaccompanied minors. Its a tragic and ironic turn of events.

Sexual assault of asylum seekers
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/17/us/sexual-assault-ice-detention-survivor-stories.html

It was an early morning in May when Maria was released from the T. Don Hutto Residential Detention Center in Texas. She had been granted bond and was permitted to stay with her brother in Washington D.C. while her asylum case was pending.

After gathering her belongings, she was escorted to a loading area fenced with razor wire and placed into a cage inside a van. The driver was a male guard named Donald Dunn. Shortly after leaving Hutto, Dunn pulled off the road.

He grabbed my breasts He put his hands in my pants and he touched my private parts, she said. He touched me again inside the van, and my hands were tied. And he started masturbating.

In 2014, a 19-year-old asylum seeker, E.D., was staying in a family detention center in Pennsylvania with her 3-year-old son. A few months into her seven-month stay, she was sexually assaulted by a male guard. I didnt know how to refuse because he told me that I was going to be deported, she said. I was at a jail and he was a migration officer. Its like they order you to do something and you have to do it.

Our video follows Maria and E.D., who are among the thousands of migrants who have said they were sexually abused while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the past 10 years, according to data from the Department of Homeland Securitys Office of the Inspector General. Both were seeking asylum in the United States.

He said his main goal as a political activist was to see a return to bipartisanship, a surprising claim in light of his lavish support for the Democrats. It was the extremism of the Republican Party that had prompted him to become a major Democratic donor, he said; he wanted the Republican Party to reform itself into a more moderate party. He said he was not especially partisan himself: I dont particularly want to be a Democrat. He spoke of his respect for John McCain. He even said he would be inclined to give financial support to moderate Republicans like Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, although he quickly walked back that comment: I shouldnt say that. That would hurt them. And while the Republicans had made bipartisanship impossible, he didnt want to see the Democrats become more ideologically rigid and confrontational.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trumps-son-concerned-wiretaps-show-trump-jr-met-putin-ally-231215529.html

The FBI has obtained secret wiretaps collected by Spanish police of conversations involving Alexander Torshin, a deputy governor of Russias Central Bank who has forged close ties with U.S. lawmakers and the National Rifle Association, that led to a meeting with Donald Trump Jr. during the gun lobbys annual convention in Louisville, Ky., in May 2016, a top Spanish prosecutor said Friday.

Jos Grinda, who has spearheaded investigations into Spanish organized crime, said that bureau officials in recent months requested and were provided transcripts of wiretapped conversations between Torshin and Alexander Romanov, a convicted Russian money launderer. On the wiretaps, Romanov refers to Torshin as El Padrino, the godfather.

Just a few months ago, the wiretaps of these telephone conversations were given to the FBI, Grinda said in response to a question from Yahoo News during a talk he gave at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington. Asked if he was concerned about Torshins meetings with Donald Trump Jr. and other American political figures, Grinda replied: Mr. Trumps son should be concerned.

The comments by Grinda were the first clear sign that the FBI may be investigating Torshin, possibly as a part of special counsel Robert Muellers probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Torshin a close political ally of Vladimir Putin had multiple contacts with conservative activists in the United States during the election, seeking to set up a summit between the Russian president and then candidate Trump. Although the summit never transpired, Torshin did meet briefly with the presidents son at a private dinner in Louisville during the May 2016 annual convention of the NRA. A member of the NRA since 2012, Torshin has been a regular attendee of the groups conventions in recent years and hosted senior members of the group in Moscow.

Grinda said that the FBI, in its request for the evidence to the Guardia Civil, the Spanish National Police, provided no explanation as to why it was interested in the material and he didnt ask for one. I dont have to ask them why they want this information, he said. But Grinda added that if Mueller or any other U.S. prosecutor seeks to use the material as part of a court case, they would have to make a second, more formal request to do so to the Spanish government.

Spokesmen for the FBI and Muellers office did not respond to requests for comment. Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Trump Jr., said he was in a meeting and was unable to comment when contacted by Yahoo News.

Torshin has been the subject of intensifying U.S. government and congressional scrutiny over the past year and was recently among a lengthy list of oligarchs and Russian political figures sanctioned by the Treasury Department. As reported by Yahoo News and the Spanish newspaper El Pas last year, the Spanish National Police were preparing to arrest Torshin in August 2013, when he was expected to fly to the Spanish island of Mallorca in August for the birthday party of Romanov. The arrest plan, which involved the deployment of more than a dozen police officers at the airport and at the hotel where the party was supposed to take place, grew out of a lengthy investigation headed by Grinda into Russian organized crime and money laundering. As part of the probe, the Guardia Civil wiretapped Romanovs phone and picked up 33 conversations with Torshin.

But Torshin never showed up for the party and he was never arrested. Grinda confirmed in an interview after his talk that some in the Guardia Civil suspected that Torshin had been tipped off to the arrest plan by Russian officials who had been asked to cooperate in the Spanish probe. But Grinda added that he was unable to prove that was why Torshin never showed up for the party.

Antifar

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-19/law-that-saved-bald-eagle-being-revamped-by-trump-administration

A decades-old law credited with saving from extinction the American bald eagle, the iconic bird of prey whose image graces the presidential seal, would be reworked under a proposal the Trump administration announced Thursday.

Enforcement of the Endangered Species Act, which seeks to prevent plants and animals from becoming extinct, would be changed to make it is easier to remove species from the list of protected ones. The proposal also makes changes that speed the approval process that federal agencies are required to complete before making changes that could harm endangered species, and would weaken protections for critical habitat.

We are proposing these improvements to produce the best conservation results for the species while reducing the regulatory burden on the American people, Greg Sheehan, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services principal deputy director, said in a statement. One thing we heard over and over again was that ESA implementation was not consistent and often times very confusing to navigate.

The effort underscores the ways the Trump administration is moving to change bedrock environmental laws in a manner long sought by industry. In June, the administration began the process of overhauling the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires environmental reviews on projects ranging from oil fields to highways that require a federal permit. The Environmental Protection Agency, meanwhile, has used industry guidance documents and policy memos to dial back its oversight of air pollution under the Clean Air Act.

The Trump administrations proposals align broadly with measures being sought by Congressional Republicans.

The Endangered Species Act was signed into law by Richard Nixon in 1973 after an environmental movement triggered by events such as a fire on Clevelands polluted Cuyahoga River, and the public backlash over the use of insecticide DDT. It protects species like the gray wolf, grizzly bear, and spotted owl, by designating them as endangered and barring hunting of them and the destruction of their habitat. The law protects more than 1,600 plant and animal species.

While the law is opposed by many in the logging, mining, farming and oil-drilling industries, environmentalists say they consider it sacrosanct, and that changes planned by the Trump administration will likely bring lawsuits.

The Endangered Species Act is under attack because it is so effective. Its the strongest environmental law the United States has probably ever passed, said Brett Hartl, director of government affairs for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental group. They have tried for a long time to weaken the law.

The changes, in the form of a trio of proposed rules, will be subject to public comment before theyre finalized.

The proposal changes the definition of the foreseeable future, addressing the laws requirement that in a listing decision, the USFWS or the National Marine Fisheries Service must determine whether a species is in danger of extinction, or likely to become so within the foreseeable future.

Under the plan, the definition of foreseeable future extends only so far as we can reasonably determine that the conditions posing the potential danger of extinction are probable, the Interior Department said.

The proposal also rescinds whats known as the blanket Section 4(d) Rule. That would effectively require tailored -- potentially narrower -- protections for species listed as threatened, rather than extending to those species the same broad protections applied to the more serious category of endangered species.

We hope they ameliorate some of the unnecessary burden, conflict, and uncertainty that is within our current regulatory structure, Deputy Interior Secretary David Bernhardt told reporters.

Israel passed the nationality bill into law on Thursday to declare that only Jews have the right of self-determination in the country, something which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed as the realization of Zionism's vision but which has stoked anger among critics who argue it is racist.

"One-hundred-and-twenty-two years after Herzl published his vision, we've enshrined into the law the basic principle of our existence," Netanyahu said. about the law, which was backed by the right-wing government in a stormy Knesset debate by a vote of 62-55.

Knesset members Benny Begin (Likud) and Orly Levy-Abekasis abstained in the 120-member Knesset after months of political argument, while Arab lawmakers, who say the law is racist and verges on a codification of apratheid, shouted and ripped up papers after the vote, prompting Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein to remove the Arab MKs from the plenum.

"This is a defining moment in the annals of Zionism and the history of the state of Israel," Netanyahu told the Knesset after the vote.

Israel, Netanyahu said during the pandemonium that erupted in the Knesset Plenum, is the only country in the Middle East that honors equal rights.

"Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people that honors the rights of all its citizens ... When I make speeches around the world, I reiterate this is our country, the country of the Jewish nation," he stated, explaining the reasons for the law.

"Over the past few years some attempt to question that and by doing so they question the foundations of our existence. This is the reason why we enshrined into a law this is our anthem, our language and our flag. Long live the State of Israel," he declared from the podium.

Largely symbolic, the law was enacted just after the 70th anniversary of the birth of the state of Israel. It stipulates that "Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people and they have an exclusive right to national self-determination in it".

The bill also strips Arabic of its designation as an official language alongside Hebrew, downgrading it to a "special status" that enables its continued use within Israeli institutions.

Israel's Arabs number some 1.8 million, about 20 percent of the 9 million population.

Early drafts of the legislation went further in what critics at home and abroad saw as discrimination towards Israel's Arabs.

Clauses that were dropped in last-minute political wranglingand after objections by Israel's president and attorney generalwould have enshrined in law the establishment of Jewish-only communities, and instructed courts to rule according to Jewish ritual law when there were no relevant legal precedents.

Instead, a more vaguely-worded version was approved, which says: "The state views the development of Jewish settlement as a national value and will act to encourage and promote its establishment."
...
MK Avi Dichter (Likud), who also sponsored the bill, explained his reasons passing the law. We are enshrining this important bill into a law today to prevent even the slightest thought, let alone attempt, to transform Israel to a country of all its citizen," he said.

"When I listened attentively to the Joint List MKs, it was impossible to miss their clear words: 'We, the Arabs will win, we are in our homeland, we were here before you and we'll be here after you.' This Basic Law is the clear-cut answer to those who think that and it is clear: You were not here before us and you will not be here after us, he responded.

"The most you can do is to live among us as a national minority that enjoys equal individual rights, but not equality as a national minority, Dichter added.
