You win $1K on a game show. Which do you choose?

You're on a game show and you've just won $1K. The host gives you the following options:

  1. Take the $1K and end the game.
  2. Play on for a 50% chance at $5K
  3. Play on for a 25% chance at $10K
  4. Play on for a 5% chance at $100K

Which do you choose?

1k is just little enough for me to risk. Especially at that 50% chance to 5x. You need life changing amounts for me to not take that

It's $1000 more than I had that morning, so it's basically gambling with house money.
Go for it.

If you do anything other than option 1 you may be subject to gambling addiction.

I would go for either the 5k or 10k options.

1k after taxes is shit nowadays. I would atleast want a little more to make me feel like I won something.

I won $500 at a casino. Went back, lost $80. Never returned again. That was like 7 years ago. Winning that $500 was one the funnest nights/mornings in my adult life. And even then, I didn't chase that buzz.

You're basically out nothing but the couple or three hours spent in the studio, and you're likely getting sandwiches in the greenroom and an appearance fee anyway.

I won the first time gambling at a casino. That set a very dangerous precedent. I was quickly brought back in line when I lost a whole paycheck during a later visit. The lesson was learned.

You have gambling addicts in your family? That helped me recognize it as a path I wasn't trying to go. Plus, I was already hooked on pills and understood addictions slippery slope through that. Pills never threated me losing my house and stuff tho lol.

One kick square to the nuts was enough to make me risk averse for life when it comes to gambling, at least when it has to do with what you cant afford to lose.

In TCs scenario, though, Id go for at least the 5k. 1k isnt making or breaking me, at this point.

Expected value isn't as useful in a one-off situation though; it's only really relevant to repeated events (like Poker hands).
