Finished At Swim-Two-Birds, by Flann O'Brien. A really, deeply funny book.

Finished Mrs. Dalloway yesterday. Really great stuff. It's written in gorgeous prose and layers onto that shifts in perspective and character.

The central characters of the book (one of whom is based on the author) are part of a literary group that is vocally anti-Paz, but most other characters just laugh off that stance as obviously silly, a sort of youthful rebellion against establishment. One of the passages later on in the book is narrated by Paz's (fictional) secretary, and he briefly becomes a character in addition to a literary reference point.

I have not read 2666, but I would recommend Savage Detectives.

There are a lot of different narrators, and the text is written as though it's being spoken aloud to you, rather than written, like someone has just asked them what they remember about this character. Each passage is headed up by the speaker's name, location, and the month/year. Some of these are 10-20 pages, and take up a whole chapter, but most passages are 2-3 pages.

I finished The Savage Detectives, by Roberto Bolano. Structurally it's fascinating; the bulk of the book is set up like an oral history of sorts, and you only see the central characters from the brief perspectives of others. Really cool in that regard.

Paz comes up a lot in this book (along with a lot of other Latin American writers and poets).

Finished reading Things Fall Apart. Really enjoyed it; Okonkwo isn't a hero, exactly, but you can sympathize with his rage at the forces of history.

Finished Rum Punch, by Elmore Leonard. You might know it as the book that resulted in the movie Jackie Brown, or Leonard because his books inspired Justified. I can see why his stuff works on TV/movies,but as a book I found it a little understated for my tastes.

Anyways, I finished Grime, by Sybille Berg. I can't remember a book inspiring so many mixed feelings. This is well-written, even a fun read at times, but it is such an angry book and I found that relentless cynicism grating.

Cool

The Clippers and Lakers are an interesting example because they play in the same arena. But for situations like the Yankees/Mets, or Cubs/White Sox, a lot depends on the neighborhood you're from.

This is a solution in search of a problem, as though rural Michigan isn't full of Lions fans, Western MA Red Sox fans, etc.

Even midway into the third area, I felt like it was really promising in that department.

Before it gets into JRPG moon bullshit, Tales of Arise starts off like it's examining different forms of tyranny. It comes really close to having not just politics, but interesting politics! But then steers away.

How do you decide what to read/what to read next?

Very carefully. No, I don't know, it's a process of like, looking into books online, seeing what's available at stores... I also try to keep a variety, so I'll avoid reading consecutive books from the same time period, for example.

No, everyone has their own taste, and you're allowed to like things that I don't.

Unless it's the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in which case you should be barred from polite society

I too fell off reading after college; I can't tell you how to feel, and you shouldn't do it out of a sense of obligation. But for me, I've been really glad I got back into the habit.

This is not a popular take, but I think Watch Dogs 2 and Legion are pretty solid if you approach them as stealth games.

It's like 110 pages, and goes in directions I wasn't expecting from the premise. Good stuff.

I loved the verticality of the canyon area, but the desert itself alternating between too hot and too cold and needing women's clothes to get into the city meant a lot of inventory management.

I was not able to finish Twilight Princess because the wolf parts gave me nausea. It's the only 3D Zelda I haven't finished.
