Substack, a platform journalists use to get paying subscribers for their worked, announced a short form feature that would seem somewhat like Twitter. Musk responded by preventing the promotion of Substack links on Twitter, which earned the ire of the people like Matt Taibbi, on whom Musk had previously relied to spread the "Twitter files" about the previous moderation process on the site.

That's because baseball hasn't been played at a professional level in years. Pitch clocks, bigger bases, 3 batter minimum for pitchers, ghost runner, etc. Japan still plays baseball. America plays Manfredball.

Half those rule changes only went into effect in competitive games after this most recent WBC; the other half after Japan's two previous WBC victories.

I dunno I feel like maybe the cause is something else.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36136201/spurs-gregg-popovich-calls-gun-control-us-criticizes-lawmakers
DALLAS -- San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich's pregame media availability Sunday opened with the NBA's all-time wins leader declining to discuss whether he would consider retirement this offseason and ended with an unprompted, passionate speech lobbying for gun control legislation in America and criticizing "cowardly legislators who are selfish."

Popovich, 74, has expressed strong opinions on gun control and other political issues frequently in recent years. He made a point to bring up the subject as his media session before the Dallas Mavericks game seemed to be wrapping up, asking whether anyone in the room was carrying a firearm.

"I just wondered because we have a governor and lieutenant governor and an attorney general that made it easier to have more guns," Popovich said, referring to Texas politicians. "That was a response to our kids getting murdered. I just thought that was a little bit strange decision. It's just me, though."

During a speech that lasted more than nine minutes, Popovich criticized several Republican legislators, particularly in Texas and Tennessee. He expressed outrage about the expulsion of Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson from the Tennessee House of Representative after the pair of Black Democrats led gun control demonstrations on the chamber floor last week in the wake of a school shooting in Nashville.

"Well, since you asked, what would it take to budge those people? What would it take?" Popovich said. "I mean, we've got two young Black guys in Tennessee who just got railroaded by a bunch of people that I would bet down deep in their soul want to go back to Jim Crow. And what they just did is a good start. It's beyond comprehension. And what were they guilty of? They actually protested?

"Those [Tennessee Republican] legislators called those kids that were protesting insurrectionists. That's hard to believe in America. But America ain't what we thought America was. It's changed. So if those kids are insurrectionists, what were the people on January 6th? What do we call them? What's the next step or word or level of violence after insurrectionists? I don't know what it is. What will it take?"

Popovich then picked up a piece of paper and read a statement from Republican Tennessee U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn that was released after a shooter killed three 9-year-olds and three adults at a private elementary school in Nashville last month.

"I mean, I couldn't believe it, so I wrote this thing down, but Senator Marsha Blackburn, her comment after was, after the massacre, 'My office is in contact with federal, state and local officials and we stand ready to assist,''' Popovich read.

"In what?! They're dead!" Popovich shouted. "What are you going to assist with -- cleaning up their brains off the wall, wiping the blood off the schoolroom floor? What are you going to assist with?

"And then there's Governor Lee. I'm sorry to go on and on, but Bill Lee: 'I'm closely monitoring the tragic situation. Please join us in prayer.' What are you monitoring? They're dead! Children -- they're dead. When I pick up my 6- and 11-year-old grandkids at school, when I'm here at home, on the way it goes through my mind that I hope they're going to be OK."

Popovich called resistance to gun control legislation an attempt to "cloak all this stuff [in] the myth of the Second Amendment," and criticized Republican lawmakers who have made family Christmas cards posing with guns.

TopicNYPD officers brag about milking overtime, call detainees names in recording

https://gothamist.com/news/nypd-officers-brag-about-milking-overtime-call-detainees-names-in-accidental-recording

Jonathan Wohls arrest last September was about as routine as they come.

The 35-year-old construction worker was staging a one-man protest against his union, recording himself on his phone as he stood in the lobby of the Midtown offices of Laborers Local 79. When security asked him to leave, he refused and the building called the cops.

In a strange twist of technological fate, Wohl's phone, which was at that point in the possession of the police, kept on recording.

For nearly eight hours, as Wohl paced around a holding cell in the Midtown South precinct, his phone picked up conversations among dozens of cops who did not appear to know they were being recorded.

The tape, which was reviewed by Gothamist, offers a rare window into the daily work of a police officer behind closed doors and the ways that a number of recent criminal justice reforms have changed the way officers process arrests and collect overtime.

In contrast to comments from top NYPD officials, who have spent years lobbying against bail reform, rank-and-file officers offered another perspective, suggesting the additional paperwork required by the new law had been a boon to their paychecks.

Bail reform sucks. But it's also one of the best things that's ever happened, too, Wohls arresting officer, Shaun Enright, said to a coworker in the recording. God is great, bro.

The NYPD declined to make Enright available for comment on this story and declined to comment as an agency. The Police Benevolent Association, the union representing rank-and-file police officers, did not respond to a request for comment.

Wohl, a father of four who grew up in the citys foster care system, spent roughly eight hours waiting for his desk appearance ticket, which notifies defendants of when theyre next due in court, according to the tape. He said the cell was filled with feces, and that his attempts to retrieve a bottle of water were met with insults. Eventually, he said, one of the officers brought him water inside a filthy cup.

At one point, roughly three hours after Wohl was first placed in a cell, an officer, whom Gothamist could not identify, can be heard approaching Enright, then lowering his voice to ask if he plans to run some time.

Are you going to milk it a bit? the officer continued. Or is it quick?

Im going to make my money, Enright replied. Im going to make it work.

The comments appear to refer to the additional overtime that officers collect while processing arrests. Allegations of the practice sometimes known as collars for dollars have dogged the NYPD for decades.

According to law enforcement experts who spoke to Gothamist, processing a misdemeanor trespassing charge shouldnt take more than a few hours. The recording shows Enright spent an additional five hours writing up Wohls desk appearance ticket.

Obviously it doesnt take eight hours to fill out a [desk appearance ticket], said Christopher Herrmann, a former NYPD crime analyst who now teaches at John Jay College. But if I need some overtime, Im going to make sure it takes a little longer than it should take. Sometimes mama needs a new pair of shoes.

Halfway through the fiscal year, the NYPD has already exceeded its annual overtime budget. In the previous year, the department spent $2.2 billion on overtime for officers, nearly double their allotted amount. The NYPD has defended the ballooning overtime as a consequence of staffing shortages and the need to respond to crime hotspots.

Herrmann said it seemed likely that officers were taking advantage of changes to bail and discovery laws, which mandate that officers scan and upload additional material, to rack up additional overtime.

Paperwork overtime is easier than most other overtimes, he said. Id rather do paperwork at a desk than stand out in the cold on New Year's Eve or get yelled at working the West Indian Day Parade.

While Enrights voice is heard the most, the tape also captures others inside the precinct. At one point, an unknown officer approaches the recording device, appearing to disparage a woman hed recently arrested as a liberal c***."

Maybe that 18 hours that you spend on that f-----g cage in the back will change your mind about life a little bit, an unidentified officer said.

Those kinds of people, nothing will ever be their fault, Enright replied.

It wasnt immediately clear who they were talking about.

Though Enright had spoken cordially to Wohl during the arrest, and even praised his cooperation, per the tape, Enrights tone shifts in the company of his fellow officers.

Privately, he is heard in the recording describing Wohl as a professional victim and a total idiot, joking that it would be funny if I EDPd him, an apparent reference to the NYPDs designation of some suspects as emotionally disturbed persons.

Wohl, who does not have a criminal record, said his protest was aimed at calling attention to a racist foreman, whom he claims the union was protecting. As a member of Laborers Local 79, Wohl maintained that he had the right to stand on union property.

But even as Enright acknowledges in the recording that the case will likely be thrown out, he expressed strong confidence in Wohls guilt, saying that Wohl had spoken to his lawyer prior to the arrest. (Wohl is currently suing a construction company he worked for over alleged discrimination).

Anytime someone has a lawyer, chances are theyre a perp because they know theyre committing crimes, Enright said in the recording.

The Manhattan district attorney declined to prosecute Wohls arrest in September.

TopicTrump moves to hire white nationalist Laura Loomer
Antifar
04/07/23 1:08:26 PM

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/07/us/politics/trump-laura-loomer.html

Former President Donald J. Trump has told aides to hire Laura Loomer, a far-right and anti-Muslim activist with a history of expressing bigoted views, for a campaign role, according to four people familiar with the plans.

Mr. Trump met with Ms. Loomer recently and directed advisers to give her a role in support of his candidacy, two of the people familiar with the move said. It is unclear whether she would serve on his campaign or the main super PAC backing his presidential bid. On Tuesday, after Mr. Trumps arraignment in Manhattan, Ms. Loomer attended the former presidents speech at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and residence in Palm Beach, Fl a.

Ms. Loomer has not yet been hired, the people familiar with the discussions said. Some of Mr. Trumps aides are said to have concerns that such a hire will cause a backlash, given her history of inflammatory statements and her embrace of the Republican Partys fringes.

Reached by phone on Friday morning, Ms. Loomer said, Out of respect for President Trump, Im not going to comment on private conversations that I had with the president.

The president knows I have always been a Trump loyalist, she added, and that Im committed to helping him win re-election in 2024. He likes me very much. And its a shame that hes surrounded by some people that run to a publication that is notorious for attacking him in order to try to cut me at the knees instead of being loyal to President Trump and respecting their confidentiality agreements.

Ms. Loomer twice ran unsuccessfully for Congress and is known for offensive attention-grabbing behavior.

She once described Islam as a cancer and tweeted under the hashtag #proudislamophobe.

In 2018, she was barred from Twitter for violating its hateful conduct policy. To protest the ban, Ms. Loomer, who is Jewish, affixed a yellow Star of David to her clothes just as Nazis made the Jews wear during the Holocaust, she said and handcuffed herself to the entrance to Twitters New York headquarters.

Twitter said she was violating its rules, while she said she was being barred for conservative activism. (She was reinstated after the billionaire Elon Musk bought the platform.)

Ms. Loomer sent The New York Times a screenshot of the tweet that prompted her ban for hateful conduct. In the tweet, she describes Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, as pro Sharia and anti Jewish.

I know a lot of people dont like me, but thats their problem, not mine, she said on Friday. I have proven my loyalty to President Trump countless times over, and even if other people try to malign me and undermine President Trumps wishes, I will continue to be a ride-or-die Trump supporter. Trump deserves loyalty and he deserves to have loyal people working for him who do not leak to the press.
