TopicDo you have mo ey to put solar panels on your roof?
Dikitain
08/07/21 7:05:57 PM
#19
I am thinking about solar shingles when I need to replace my roof (probably 5-10 years from now), but there are several things preventing me from doing it.

1) My area has heavy cloud cover 9 months out of the year, and partial cloud cover the other 3 months.
2) The price is going to be highly variable. If I end up needing power from the grid, it is going to be charged as a secondary source which will more then double the price. However, if I end up producing more energy then I use, I will be adding power to the grid and the electric company will end up writing me a check.
3) Solar isn't as popular in my area because our energy is already 90% hydroelectric and nuclear. In fact, only like 3% actually comes from "dirty" power like coal or petroleum. So finding contractors who do it is difficult. Would be a lot easier and cheaper for me to install a geothermal heat pump (assuming I have enough space in my yard) and cut natural gas for my furnace and water heater.
4) During the winter, my roof regularly has about 4-6 inches of snow on it, and I don't want to have to go out there and clean it off.

On the one hand it is less clutter, on the other hand you miss out on things not playing on real hardware. For example, Star Fox actually runs too good on emulators or even clone consoles. The game was notorious for having massive slowdown due to the FX chip when running on an original SNES. But, the game was designed around that, so people who complain that it is "too hard" probably don't realize it is supposed to be played at like half the framerate they usually play it at. Also, some NES games (usually unlicensed ones) don't work well on anything other than original NES hardware.

The main one I can always tell if someone is emulating or running on a clone console is Dudes with Attitude, as the main hub is supposed to look like this:

https://www.mobygames.com/game/nes/dudes-with-attitude/screenshots/gameShotId,286331/

But when emulated it looks like this:

https://www.video-games-museum.com/en/screenshots/Nes/4/4897-ingame-Dudes-With-Attitude.jpg

But yea, I would rather get stuff digital now then searching our retro hardware, especially since the last retro game store in my area went out of business several years ago.

Edit: Oh yea, and of course there is Mike Tyson being impossible in Punch Out unless you are playing on a CRT...

I think it depends on the company. I find that companies that try to drown interviewees in code projects and exercises usually are trying to make themselves seem more interesting then they actually are. I would rather have a 1-2 hour interview with someone, maybe ask them some simple programming questions just to make sure they know their stuff, and spend most of the time evaluating them as a team member. As long as you are willing to learn and can show you are halfway competent, then that is good enough for me. I don't need you to show me a program that can evaluate all prime numbers in log n time (actually a question someone asked me in an Interview).

Respectfully disagree, but I also played it on OG gameboy so it probably had something to do with it. Those screens were impossible to even SEE, let alone the monochromatic nature of the things. I had to sit under a friggin' 100W bulb lamp just to play it haha.

Most of those things are complains about the gameboy though, which for the record I was never a fan of (even the color version, and I "tolerated" the GBA). I wouldn't fault Metroid 2 for it because it worked well within the confines of the system. The game had to be more linear with more save spots due to the nature of handheld gaming in general, and I think it did a great job of doing that.

As much as I love the original SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend) games, I maintain that my dislike of the Gameboy was primarily having to play them on it because those games were not designed well for that system. Would have been much better if they came out on the NES.

That's tough because you are going to be starting in the middle of the story, but if PS3 is your only option, probably 4. 3 can be brutal because the combat is very mid 2000's. 4 they cleaned it up a bit and added a lot more content. 5 is a beast (I am currently working on that one), you probably need to abandon life responsibilities for a good 2 months to get through that...

If you have PS4, PC, or XBox One, definitely 0.

If you quit a job, you disqualify yourself from unemployment so that isn't the best move to make.

Generally, unemployment is provided only to those who are temporarily out of work through no fault of their own so if you quit a job, that's your fault.

Depends on the circumstances for which you quit. If it was because of a better opportunity, school, or becoming self employed, then no, you don't qualify. If you quit due to unsafe work conditions or because your employer basically forced you to so they didn't have to fire you, then you might qualify. Of course, that has to be proven and can take quite a while before you see anything.

The original, as influential of a game as it is, is just way too cryptic and downright frustrating. Zero Mission improved on it in every conceivable way and made it obsolete.

I always considered Big Brother to be the "whitest" show on television, and not just because most of the contestants are white. It is 16 people sitting in a mansion with free food, clothing, and shelter having petty arguments with each other, forming cliques, and trying to kick each other out so that they have more space. The closest thing to a "punishment" is that they are forced to eat poor people food for a week. One person sits in his private room and looks down on all of the peons they control while deciding who should be voted on to be kicked out. In the end, the winner is decided by a popularity contest.

It is no surprise Friends ended around the time this show became popular because all the Karens and Kevins needed something to watch...

I appreciate you citing that it hasn't been used in almost a century for clarification and transparency.

If you have an elementary school education, then you were taught about the gold standard and learned that it is no longer used. That said, you weren't necessarily taught about how fiat money (the current monetary system used by most countries in the world) works because that is WAY more complex than what would probably be taught at that level.

Lol, if you think every dollar is backed by gold.

No one thinks that, the gold standard hasn't been used in almost 90 years.

Yep, probably my best friend. Which to outside people looking in is not the case because we talk maybe once a month and visit each other only during holidays. But that is how we treat our friends.

Fighting games.

Love playing them, HATE the community. Like, fighting games are some of the easiest pick-up and play type games out there, yet people get up in arms about not only which games you enjoy, but HOW you enjoy them. I have never gotten more hate mail in my PS3 message inbox then when I played Tekken 6 online for a few months.

I still dont get why people are so bothered by using more than one storefront

like you dont see people being that way outside of video games really

I am not bothered by using more then one storefront, I am bothered by using Epic Games Store. Simply put, they spend all of their resources trying to force people to use them with free games and exclusives rather than making a storefront that is actually comparable to something like GoG or Steam.

And of course you see that outside of video games. How many people want Walmart in their area simply for the fact they don't want to have to go to different stores for bread and pants? Or if you want an "on-line" example, Amazon?
