Man King Herod's Song is a bop.

I was torn between nominating the movie version or the Arena Tour version but I find the modern reinterpretation really interesting, making him more of a TV figure, one of those Late Late Show hosts. It's just really fun.

I LOVE Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. Always have. Geen Wilder as Willy Wonka is one of my favorite performances of all time. But I definitely gotta give some credit to Julie Dawn Cole here, who just effortlessly dominates this scene. I never cared for Veruca Salt as a character, which is kind of the point. She's the worst. She's the definition of spoiled taken to its absolute extreme. It's not entirely her fault either, because her dad is a total enabler, where she ultimately just seems to be testing her limits with him, which ultimately don't exist. She's hateable, but not evil. While the song itself isn't much, Cole has some nice range here, going from shouting orders to quiet and calm within moments. Like many songs in this film, it's simply iconic.

Hey, so the issue's I had with the vocals on Gamma Unchained? Not so much here, where the song is anything but dull. Like Gamma Unchained, it records the song over 8-bit instrumentals, but never feels limited by them; they're there more for added flavor than as a strict guideline. Part of me wants to dislike the song; there's a lot going on in a way that would usually strike me as unpleasant, and yet I'm still feeling a little jazzed over it.

The subject matter of the song is Metal Man, who... look I haven't played the Mega Man games but as far as I knew he was basically just a robot with some blades. This song definitely fucks with that perception, giving Metal Man a love story that I wasn't expecting and definitely didn't ask for. It's such a touching love song, in fact, that it robs Metal Man of anything that made him villainous! He just wants love but he can't accept it into his lonely, metal heart! That's so sad! Also he's not a dentist?!?

We've slowly been moving into the territory of some real damn villains, and what marks that transition better than literal Satan leading an army of demons? At least, I figure that's who this is about, but I can't truly be sure (without context of the original video for it) because the lyrics are so damn vague. I think the singer, who I assume is Satan, just wants destruction, but also maybe he wants power? He's singing to... somebody? Maybe an angel on the other side? He both sings that he's going to take the listener down and also asks the listener not to leave him? To be completely honest, I don't think Symphony X themselves had a particularly clear idea of where they wanted to go with this song, aside from them wanting it to shred. And shred it does.

--FIND YOUR WAAAAAY, FIND YOUR WAY BACK TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
YOU CAN FIND YOUR WAAAAAAAY, FIND YOUR WAY BACK TO MEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeee

So originally this song was ranked much lower. MUCH lower. It's not a particularly villainous song, only just barely scoring more than a 1 for its mention of vengeful thoughts, and even that's a stretch. The song also tells me very little about Saavedro and DEFINITELY very little about the person Saavedro is singing to. I get that they're trapped on an island, desperately hoping for the listener to FIND THEIR WAY, FIND THEIR WAY BACK TO THEEEEEEM, but also recognizing the complexity and possible toxicitry of their relationship.

I had it ranked lower, until I listened to it again. And again. And again. And it always just seemed to FIND ITS WAAAAAAAAY, FIND ITS WAAAAAAY BACK TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

76. Dentist!
Source: Little Shop of Horrors
Villain: Orin Scrivello
Nominator: BetrayedTangy (2 left)
Favorite lyric: When I start extracting those molars / You girls will be screaming like holy rollers

https://youtu.be/bOtMizMQ6oM

Villainy: 7
Characterization: 6
Melody: 2
Total: 15/30

So I'm in the very very very small minority with the opinion that the original Little Shop of Horrors 1960s b-movie horror/comedy is better than the musical or the film remake. The original was short, dark, and hilarious. The musical remake took the same story beats, but drastically changed the tone of it, making it bigger, campier, and just not really my cup of tea at all. One example of this is Steve Martin's dentist. He's goofy and has a very Steve Martin-y type of humor that I've never cared for and definitely doesn't match Nicholson's original performance (fun fact, originally Nicholson was a sadomasochistic dental patient rather than a dentist himself). On top of that, it puts Steve Martin in a singing role despite the fact that he's really not a particularly good singer, and this song really just kinda jumps around, serving more as a vessel for Martin's personality to come through. It still grabs the very sadistic sensibility of the dentist at least (even if they feel the need to explain it through violent, detailed backstory of him murdering small animals. He's incredibly sadistic, and while I feel like I need to give this credit in this ranking for explaining why he is how he is surprisingly elaborately in such a short song, I can't help but still prefer the brutal mystery of the original Wilbur Force.

75. Endless Despair
Source: Blazblue
Villain: Yuuki Terumi/Unlimited Hazama
Nominator: Pirateking2000 (2 left)
Favorite lyric: Placed side by side, covered with blood on your vacant face

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zofdXiFze8

Villainy: 8
Characterization: 3
Melody: 4
Total: 15/30

Man, it took me a while to figure out the context of this without having actually played the Blazblue series. I'm still not sure if I should say this is the song of one villain over the other, or both together, given that there's some weird possession shenanigans going on here. Like several of the songs on this list, it takes a serious hit on the melody score entirely for the vocals. The intsrumentals here rock, and could've done much better as a song with the forced lyrics. I get the strong feeling they recorded the instrumental first and added lyrics much later, as the vocals are oddly just sort of squeezed into the lines to match the music, but often stretching out words for multiple beats and emphasizing weird syllables in a way that makes everything just feel very wrong. It doesn't tell us a whole lot about these characters though, which is a shame given how complicated they're situation is. What it DOES tell us is that this guy is fucking evil as shit. This one verse alone:

What is this
Ill kill you all just for fun and games
And in the most cruel way, sacrifice you
What a shame, no escape
Even if you cry out, theres no one
Nothing but violence can save the world

This is someone who kills without hesitation and relishes in the harm he's inflicting.

Oof was not expecting Dentist to fall this early, but I totally get it. I actually still need to watch the 60's version, but I'm totally with you on how campy the 80's movie feels. The actual musical itself is a lot darker though and I genuinely considered nominating Now It's Just the Gas, but thought Dentist! Would do better.

Also I don't think Nicholson's character became the Dentist, because Bill Murray played that role in the 80's version. (Although I still think Nicholson's version was better)

Yeah the 80's movie is kinda crap. Most of the best songs are cut, the ending was changed from the plants taking over the world to Seymour and Audrey living happily together and yeah the campiness you mentioned is really amped up.

So yeah I totally agree with your criticisms there.

Here's the other song, I considered nominating. I think it's a lot cooler, but doesn't describe Orin as well.

74. How Bad Can I Be?

So just a couple rankings back, I mentioned how many spots Exile went up due to how it sticks in your head and makes you want to belt out its chorus. This fails melodically for the same reason that one succeeded; the song gets stuck in your head with a horribly grating chorus that just makes you want to claw your ears out. There's a lot going wrong in the song, between the half-rapping, and the obnoxious backup, but that "How ba-a-a-ad can I be?" is just the absolute worst. The only thing keeping it from a 1 is the very end of the song, which does manage to have some positive impact. The song also throws any sense of subtelty right out the window, feeling the need to REALLY drive in that this is supposed to be the villain, just in case the kids watching hadn't picked up on it yet. And he's a villain that's particularly easy to hate due to how much he feels like someone you see in pretty much every business, justifying his every action no matter how terrible and refusing to acknowledge the devastation he's causing. It'd be a pretty deep message by kid movie standards, but again, it drills it in way too hard too fast.

73. White Bat

https://youtu.be/Iihmw-qbPNE

Villainy: 7
Characterization: 3
Melody: 5
Total: 15/30

Who exactly He Is Legend is singing about here is a little bit of a mystery. It's referred to as "White Bat," and while the album art admittedly made me think they were singing about a literal monstrous bat, but the lyrics seem to suggest something different, maybe a serial killer or other type of cruel lunatic who preys on the weak. The bat imagery is strong though, portraying the person/creature stalking from the shadows and returning to the dark after striking. The setup to make a really terrifying creature is there, though it's hard to decide exactly how evil this creature is without getting a little more exploration on it. On top of that, I wish I liked the song more than I did. It starts alright, with a Metalica-esque vibe, but quickly devolved into the type of pop-punk metalcore that I just haven't ever particularly cared for, with solid instrumentals but a whiny tone to the voice.

I've always been a huge fan of Sonic music. It's almost always cheesy and over the top, and while I wouldn't call it one of the best Sonic songs out there, E.G.G.M.A.N. definitely deserves the reputation its gotten amongst Sonic fans. The chorus is catchy as hell, and the songs holds a place in my heart, though objectively the singer has very very little range and almost never changes up his pitch or tone. It SHOULD score lower for the melody, I'll admit, but I don't have it in me to put it lower. It tells you exactly what you need to know about Eggman. He's a mad genius, a scientist who schemes and creates robots to take over the world, and wishes to destroy "the blue one." Not super deep, but hey, Eggman's not a deep guy. Multiple mentions of destruction and a general sense of power-hungry madness definitely gives him just a little villainy boost as well.

71. My Freeze Ray

Aw, poor Dr. Horrible. Not enough of a villain for the League of Evil and not enough of a villain for the villain song rankings. I love this song, as well as pretty much every song on Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog. NPH just has a fantastic voice, and I'm legitimately disappointed he doesn't take on many singing roles anymore unless it's to host an award show. My Freeze Ray is short and very, VERY sweet, almost sickeningly so, but in a way that instantly makes you sympathize with Horrible. Villain songs from protagonists are always a weird bag, and this is almost as wholesome as they get. A brief mention of ruling the world doesn't even score it any villainy points when it's sung in a dreamy, loving way like this, especially when that's only the second most important goal to our lovestruck supervillain.

70. Collective Consciousness

The second nomination for Armstrong finally drops, and while It Has To Be This Way was a decent song that didn't tell me much about Armstrong, Collective Consciousness is its direct opposite. It tells me plenty about Armstrong, but I don't particularly care for the song itself much. It depicts Armstrong as the pinnacle of ruling with an iron fist. The song screams capitalism without a hint of subtlety. "Burn the weak." "Give up free will." "Blindly swear allegiance." As a way of depicting what Armstrong stands for and why he's the villain of the story, it does a great job. As a song on its own, it has a lot to be desired. I never cared much for that type of hard rock/electronic mix that some bands have gotten popular off of in the last decade or so. It just undercuts the aggresiveness of the song that's already there. The vocalist doesn't quite have the punch needed to drive the message through; I could see this working better as a Dream Theater-type epic than the brief song we ended up with.

Villainy: 4

Well this was a fun little surprise. It's a chipper, goofy song about how great Marjoly the evil queen is. Why is she evil? Well... because she's the evil queen of course! The best one! What initially seems like it's going to a ballad solely dedicated to stroking Marjoly's ego ends up only mostly doing that, but also puts in a verse about Ferdinando, the cursed prince Marjoly is desperate for. That sounds like a pretty wholesome goal honestly, though I also get the feeling there's a lot more to it than that in the context of the game. It definitely gives me a pretty solid idea of who Marjoly is, and giving her different followers a chance to include their voice is a nice touch, even if the followers' voices aren't quite as musically refined as hers are.

Goddamn, this was way better than I expected from a poorly claymated music video about the Three Little Pigs. You could've told me this was Megadeth and I would've believed you without a second thought. It's got everything: powerful shreds, aggressive vocals, and a hilarious sense of humor. When the Pigs sent out Rambo, I about lost my shit, and using a drum solo for the machine gun fire was a great artistic choice. So good it mostly makes up for the grating "NOT BY THE HAIR ON MY CHINNY CHIN CHIN." Of course, it doesn't tell you much more about The Big Bad Wolf than you all assuredly already knew, but ultimately that's fine given how simplistic of a character it is to begin with. You do get a little bit of extra flavor for the pigs though, who seem oddly distinct. And yeah, the wolf's an asshole. Don't destroy people's houses, dude, fuck is wrong with you.

Damn, dude, I was not expecting this song to go as hard as it did. Without knowing much of anything about SKRS, I get the sense that Maya falls more into the rival category as opposed to a straight-up villain, competing with Aijou Karen to be the best... musician? Actress? Something in that range. This is probably one of the stronger cases of the melody of the song contributing to heavily to the characterization; you really get the sense that this is a battle, but less so once Maya's sections really take over. Maya is, as the title suggests, confident and arrogant, and rightfully so. She welcomes people to challenge her, but knows nobody else truly can, and proclaims her dominance, saying "I have no need for those who lack willpower." It's really just a damn good song.

Speaking of the Big Bad Wolf, I wonder how Me and Mr. Wolf by The Real Tuesday Weld would have done. I probably would have nominated it if Id thought about it.
The amount of "I wish I had nominated _____" already in this topic definitely makes me want to run this again someday.

I'm surprised by how grand and theatrical the arrangement is!
I think the melody itself can be better, it's a bit choppy in parts.

Also, halfway point is 57?

The guys from the Maximum Carnage soundtrack? Neat. I always half-wondered their non-gaming songs sounded like.

I was lucky to get my nominations in, because I recall that I posted mine 10 minutes after the initial closing. I had the topic open while I was thinking about my nominations, and the nominations closed during this, but I didn't see it because the page wasn't refreshed on my end until I posted.

66. Drink
Source: Alestorm
Villain: Heavy Metal Pirates
Nominator: Janus5k (2 left)
Favorite lyric: We've sailed all the seas for wenches and mead / And told great tales of the huntmasters' deeds / The quest for a drum of the famous ol' spiced / Has shown us the wrath of leviathans might

Villainy: 4
Characterization: 4
Melody: 8
Total: 16/30

I actually discovered Alestorm for the first time about two years ago, because a coworker was really into them, and I fuckin dig this band. They're kind of like if you took The Dropkick Murphys and replaced their Celtic theme with a Pirate theme. It's not surprising that the combination pays off so well. The song is just a blast that makes you want to shout, party and, uh... something else I guess? It definitely feels more like a party song than a villain song, but there is certainly villainy to be had in pirate-themed music, namely the song's repeated insistence that they are here to drink your beer and steal your rum at the point of a gun. I just like the absurdity of it all, it's a pirate gang that doesn't want wealth, just alcohol, to the point that they *checks notes* went back in time? Is that right?

65. Infinite
Source: Sonic Forces
Villain: Infinite
Nominator: Pirateking2000 (1 left)
Favorite lyric: 'Cause if you're messing with me, I am a dangerous weapon / I am the sharpest of blades, I'll cut you down in a second

https://youtu.be/LDu9AY15fQI

Villainy: 3
Characterization: 3
Melody: 10
Total: 16/30

I am fully willing to admit this song only made it this far 100% due to my own personal bias. I had been following all the pre-release details for Sonic Forces up to its release, and I about lost my shit when they revealed this song. Sonic Forces got shit on by critics and general audiences alike, but ultimately it was a game made for a very specific audience of die-hard fans that were all-in for a game that was willing to make fun of itself. Giving players the chance to play as their Sonic OC against a character so over-the-top edgy that he somehow manages to out-edge Shadow the Hedgehog is a fuckin stroke of genius, and that all culminates in Infinite's theme, which brags about how he's the sharpest of blades and the tallest of towers and is stronger than all his classmates at the sonic fighting academy and likes hot gurls with big boobys who are sluts. It's so goddamn over-the-top, and included in all that, it's a fuckin' banger (though had I not been so hyped for the song when it released, I might not think the same thing). As a villain song, it admittedly is pretty ineffective, given that literally all it tells you is that Infinite is the best and he's going to defeat you (you being Sonic I assume? Who knows)

If Shadow is the Sonic equivalent of Venom, Infinite is Carnage. Shadow and Venom were introduced as darker, evil versions of Sonic and Spider-Man, but because they were so popular they stuck around, and eventually shifted towards an anti-hero / rival role. So a new character was needed to fill Shadow and Venom's old roles, who was even edgier with absolutely zero redeeming qualities. Enter Infinite and Carnage.

I hope Infinite comes back at some point, but I don't see it happening any time soon. Sega mandated that the Sonic comics aren't allowed to use Infinite, and he wasn't in Team Sonic Racing, so I'm guessing that they only intended him as a one-off, aside from being in Smash Ultimate as one of the weakest spirits in the game.

The second verse is just them name-dropping a lot of old songs of theirs, I believe, including Back Through Time.

Admittedly I was a bit leery on nominating it as a -villain- song, but they openly admit what they're doing is criminal so hey

for what it's worth Team Sonic Racing probably isn't a good measuring point giving how disappointingly little effort they put into that

though tbh most Sonic villains that aren't Shadow or Eggman don't really hang around much beyond their initial games. I'd expect to see Infinite in the same role as Chaos, showing up very rarely in cameo appearances and maybe if they ever make a Sonic Generations 2 (fingers crossed)
