What is a villain song? Maybe it's the narrator's cheeky way of introducing us to our antagonist. Maybe it's a truly cruel man boasting about his sadistic tendencies. Maybe it's an anti-hero expressing his moral struggle of whether or not he should finally cross to the dark side. Maybe it's the final obstacle on the hero's journey screaming "No, you will not continue!"

Villain songs have been around about as long as villains themselves have, and they give a brief insight into the perspective of the villain, often in stories predominantly told from the hero's perspective.

The nominated villain songs are going to be ranked on three categories:

1. Villainy - Just how "villainous" is this character? Are they simply a misguided victim who was never given a fair chance? Or are they a truly evil monster who deserves whatever they get?
2. Characterization - Without having seen the movie or played the game or whatever it may be, how well does this song establish who the character is and what their motivations are? Are they simplistic and one-note, or do they truly have something to say and complex emotions to express?
3. Melody - Simply put, how good is this song? Is it a banger or a dud? Am I going to listen to this song on repeat for years or am I counting down the moments until it's over?

Each category can get up to 10 points, for a total possible of 30 points. Obviously with 100+ nominations and only 27 possible scores, there's going to be plenty of ties, which will be broken by personal preference.

There are only four songs out of the 113 nominated that got a score of 1 point in characterization. Putting aside how I feel about the song for a moment, in terms of the character this is about (that blue mech thing on the robot dog), this song tells me literally nothing beyond "it's a character in a rhythm game." I would've had no idea this song was supposed to be about a villain had it not been nominated in villain songs, and even when trying to scrape together lore about the character, I get nothing about them from the song. That being said, the song itself is... ok. I actually kinda dug the celtic feel of it at first, which wasn't what I expected from a beatmania game. Then it quickly became exactly what I expected from a beatmania game which has never really been my thing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Dr. Zaius! For a super brief joke reference in a cartoon, it's definitely memorable and fun! Is it a good song? Ehhhhhh... I mean, Rock Me Amadeus is a pretty decent song, sure. And this is definitely a not as good version of that! It's funny. It definitely got a laugh out of me when I saw it the first time, maybe even the first couple times. I also didn't get it the first time I saw it, because I was a kid at the time and didn't know what Planet of the Apes was. And for someone who hasn't seen Dr. Zaius to get the reference, what does this tell you about him? Well, he's a doctor, given the name. MAYBE he's an ape, but even that is unclear without the visuals to go along with it.Fun, sure. Villain song? No.

Goddamn. So, much like Undertale, Deltarune has a pretty great chiptune soundtrack. Then this guy comes along, adds lyrics and vocals to the songs roughly in sync with the tunes, and suddenly the music becomes much, much worse. Some songs are meant to have vocals. This definitely, definitely wasn't, because holy shit these vocals sound awful. Multiple vocal tracks are laid over top of each other, and they're all irritating, but combined they make each other worse. The song was grating to get through.

Ranking this for characterization and villainy is tougher because all the lyrics are thrown at you barely comprehensibly. I had to separately pull up the lyrics after listening to try and get what he was saying, because even having played this game, it was hard to tell what the hell the singer was on about. Jevil's whole thing is that he's both a jester and a devil, but beyond that, it's hard to really get much from the song. Ultimately Jevil comes across as just kind of crazy and chaos-driven moreso than evi, without clear motivation or desires.

I agree, the banners are awesome!! I kinda figured ELFERIA was getting a low characterization score so it was risky, and the risk proved to be a bad risk compounded with you not liking the song lol. I was originally regretting going with this over the first song, Rengoku no Elferia, cause Rengoku is a little more on the nose with "final boss song in rhythm game form" but given the writeup I don't think it would've mattered so I don't really regret it after all.

I think Lincle is the only name directly related to the "IIDX" lore, which is the name of the Kingdom that the game's main event takes place in. Lincle Kingdom then loosely plays into SPADA's Qprogue, and subsequently PENDUAL's Qpronicle Chord where Despair is from. Those are the only three games that really had what is a true story, though the characters from the trilogy show up nowadays still. tricoro did have some story stuff that played into events but is more tangentially related to the Qpro storyline (Red Ripika being the final boss) than the other three games' big events.

....Also Qpronicle Chord is basically part dating sim too. Just thought that'd be funny to mention.

Man, what the fuck Alice Cooper. I mean, I like Alice Cooper, but this is some corny garbage. Had Cooper ever seen a Friday the 13th movie before this, because holy shit does this completely miss the feeling of the entire franchise. Hell, it misses the feeling of horror in general. Whose idea was this? Who approved this? This might be the worst thing I've ever seen Alice Cooper do. It's so vague that I wouldn't even know it was about Jason without the "ooh ooh ooh ah ah ahs." The only thing stopping this song from being dead last is the fact that it inevitably gets some points for villainy, because yeah, masked man stalking a couple in the woods is pretty damn villainous, but even then it only scratches the surface of villainy given how vague the song was lyrically.

Wow I was not expecting that. I like the song a lot! Pretty catchy and some solid (if not mind blowing) guitar work at the least. And I think the lyrics create a spooky atmosphere well enough, though I guess I can agree it isn't totally obvious it is about Jason just from the lyrics.
