The second nomination for Armstrong finally drops, and while It Has To Be This Way was a decent song that didn't tell me much about Armstrong, Collective Consciousness is its direct opposite. It tells me plenty about Armstrong, but I don't particularly care for the song itself much. It depicts Armstrong as the pinnacle of ruling with an iron fist. The song screams capitalism without a hint of subtlety. "Burn the weak." "Give up free will." "Blindly swear allegiance." As a way of depicting what Armstrong stands for and why he's the villain of the story, it does a great job. As a song on its own, it has a lot to be desired. I never cared much for that type of hard rock/electronic mix that some bands have gotten popular off of in the last decade or so. It just undercuts the aggresiveness of the song that's already there. The vocalist doesn't quite have the punch needed to drive the message through; I could see this working better as a Dream Theater-type epic than the brief song we ended up with.
