Most of the popular stuff pretty much. We get the big HBO shows (GoT, Westworld, Sharp Objects, etc.) on Sky Atlantic, for example. We get a UK version of FOX (with American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, Family Guy and shit like that). Other channels occasionally pick up other shows (Homeland, Lethal Weapon, etc.). Then of course there's Netflix and Amazon Prime.

WoW literally changed the world

Those. Fuck OP's aversion to PC gaming. You can't really separate it from console gaming in terms of influence, especially nowadays when many traditionally PC-centric genres are popular on consoles.

Ultima Underworld basically influenced "immersive sims" (and other games), from System Shock / 2 to Deus Ex to BioShock to The Elder Scrolls (and arguably BotW, at least indirectly), and many others. Allegedly it even influenced the graphics in Catacomb 3-D (a precursor to Wolfenstein 3D and of course Doom). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_Underworld:_The_Stygian_Abyss#Legacy

Metroid pretty much goes without saying, inspiring greats like Super Metroid and SotN, and more recent indie Metroidvanias like Cave Story, Guacamelee!, etc.

WoW changed MMOs and gaming more generally, whether its influence was positive or negative.

What was the appeal of the sitcom "Keeping up Appearances"?

Why did it survive multiple series and two Roses?

Maybe I'm missing the humor as a United States citizen, but it seemed like the same lousy joke told over and over again.

Can't say I've watched it (much). I'm more of an Only Fools fan.

According to the Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeping_Up_Appearances):

The sitcom follows Hyacinth in her attempts to prove her social superiority, and to gain standing with those she considers upper class. Her attempts are constantly hampered by her lower class extended family, whom she is desperate to hide. Much of the humour comes from the conflict between Hyacinth's vision of herself, and the reality of her underclass background. In each episode, she lands in a farcical situation as she battles to protect her social credibility.

Also, I didn't realize this:

Keeping Up Appearances was a great success in the UK, and also captured large audiences in the US, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands. By February 2016, it had been sold nearly 1,000 times to overseas broadcasters, making it BBC Worldwide's most exported television programme.

I'm happy to debate you on each and every one of those points once you provide a respectable source for each one.

I can make a start (on whether the UK is the worst in the first-world).

1. Knife crime is an issue (a very specific one), but if you look the murder rate and violent crime generally, the UK has nothing on the US.
2. Can't argue with that.
3. Technically true, but it's never been used since 1707. It's effectively useless.
4. The House of Commons has supremacy over the House of Lords in legislative matters.
5. The US doesn't even have UHC, so the UK can't really be worse in this regard (your assumption seems to be that UHC is desirable, which I agree with). I'm not going to downplay the Tory attempts to privatize it through the back door. Fuck them.
6. It's not as if this is purely a negative thing, plus it's supported by the public, who obviously think it's worth having (no, this isn't the same as the public supporting genocide, for example, which is clearly bad). Sporting rifles and shotguns (e.g. for farmers) are allowed with a license. Our gun crime rate is tiny (not necessarily because of gun control admittedly, but it seems sensible to assume it has some effect), especially in comparison to the US's.
7. Yeah, there is an issue with going after people posting on social media (although how many have actually been jailed for their opinions I'm not sure). Tommy Robinson's situation is completely different (and justified) though: https://thesecretbarrister.com/2018/05/25/what-has-happened-to-poor-tommy-robinson/ As for "literal thought crime", we don't have that. I'm being pedantic there with your use of "literal" to be fair.
8. Source? I remember there being something like this in the Labour party (something to do with all-women shortlists), but not an actual government agency. Maybe on a gender equality committee or something. Even so, I'm not sure it's the dystopian nightmare it's being made out as. I can see the downsides, absolutely.
9. Is this terrorism laws you're talking about? Or detention of migrants? Either way, I agree it's an issue, although the US does similar or worse.
10. Yeah, this is definitely an issue (Snoopers' Charter, Digital Economy, etc.). The Tories (and Labour really) don't have a clue about technology.
11. Some hardline Brexiters want this, but they're a minority in government, thankfully. If it comes to pass, then you can hold it over us. Also, the UK was instrumental in drafting these rights, which is why I find it funny when Brexiters argue that we can have our own, better Great British rights (as if)!

I agree with many of these as a point of principle (e.g. I'm against the monarchy and HoL), but in practice, they aren't all as insidious as you say (or unique to the UK in the first world). I'm not saying we shouldn't care, just that we should put things in perspective (for *some* of the above, not the ones I admitted were a problem).

Then one could make a similar list for the US and other countries. For example, I'd say having the largest prison population per capita is more of an issue than almost anything in the UK.

So, I disagree with the UK being the most dystopian first-world country (although we are up there admittedly). We have our issues, like all (first-world) countries.
TopicAre you for or against the death penalty?

I'm against it personally. We hardly trust the government to fill in potholes, and the death penalty is obviously a much bigger responsibility than that. It's irreversible, unlike prison (although obviously being locked up wrongfully is terrible too). As Zikten said, we know (to a reasonable degree of certainty) that innocent people have been executed.

Maybe we could only do it in cases where it's certain that the person in question committed a heinous crime, but I think that's harder than it seems to do in practice and still wouldn't be totally fool-proof / abuse-proof.

What's the evidence on it being a deterrent? I think I looked into that once, but I don't recall finding any unbiased, quality research.

Also, I've always wondered if the death penalty might even contribute to crime (e.g. vigilantism). It normalizes violence, vengeance, dehumanization, etc. (although a few things do to be fair). Some say video games (and other media) cause violence, but what exactly does the death penalty say to people? One is fictional and one is real. Maybe I'm going a bit far with that, but it's an interesting thing to think about.

Clearly a D.

Critics certainly have their flaws (and I often disagree with them), but gamers can be the most reactionary babies at times. Not to mention that user reviews are (more) susceptible to manipulation, e.g. people (or bots) spamming 1-star reviews because of one specific issue they have with the game. It could be a perfectly good game otherwise. "review bombing" can be such a problem that services like Steam have introduced measures to try and make clear when it's happened at the very least.

Yes. No. I live in Glasgow, so it's not surprising.

I went to Catholic schools and did all the usual sacraments (baptism, communion, confirmation, etc.). At primary school, there was a church literally a few feet away, so we occasionally had mass there. At secondary school, we just had mass in school (but less often). Then there was all the other shit like Ash Wednesday.

At home, my parents weren't really that into religion honestly. They consider themselves Catholic, but haven't really participated for years. They don't really care about my religious views tbqh. I became an atheist on my own pretty much. There wasn't anything major to put me off the religion or anything.

Oh, it's Sunhawk.

I hear that JRPG claim a lot (usually from those that have little experience of the PS1), but I think it's a pretty big misconception. The PS1 featured many genres (some extensively so); JRPGs, yes, but also platformers (Spyro, Crash, Oddworld, Tomba!), racers (Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer, Wipeout), fighters (Tekken, Street Fighter / Marvel vs. X, Soul Blade), survival horror games (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fear Effect), stealth (Metal Gear Solid, Tenchu), strategy (Command & Conquer), 2D (SotN, Mega Man X), sports (Tony Hawks), even FPS (Medal of Honor), etc. That's just some of the obvious stuff.

You can argue all day about the quality (few will argue about the graphics, but that's certainly not unique to the PS1 in that gen, plus some games managed to buck that trend), but I would argue that the games mentioned above are *at least* good, some great (MGS, SotN and Tekken 3 at the very least).

I haven't played Gen 5 yet (but it does sound like something I'd enjoy). Otherwise, I agree.

The good thing about Gen 4 and B2/W2 is that they have a good combination of features and content (post-game, moves and Pokemon). Everything after that lacks post-game content and everything before it lacks moves/Pokemon and features like the Physical/Special split.

Gens 1 and 2 were my favorites *at the time*, but now, other gens have made improvements/additions that I find it hard to go without (plus you have the remakes of course). I only go back for the interesting glitches in Gen 1.

Also, I think Gen 4 (and probably 5) are the most difficult (which isn't saying much). Cynthia puts up a good fight (and the Gym Leaders to a lesser extent).

SotN has better music, graphics and combat, but I think SM has far better level design. SM gives you greater scope for doing things out of order and Samus' abilities are more versatile than Alucard's Relics (e.g. the different things you can do with the Speed Booster). I appreciate that not everyone cares about sequence breaks, speedrunning, etc., but SM is set up almost perfectly for that. I think that's why it has had such longevity.

It's more or less tied with Prime for me.

Prime has the better graphics, music/sound and atmosphere/immersion, while Super probably has better level design and is more open-ended. Prime is pretty damn open-ended itself though, at least if you include glitches / sequence breaks. Control-wise, neither is perfect. Super is certainly more conventional, and platforming / movement work better in 2D. Prime translated those things into 3D / first-person as well as it probably could though.

I've never played it exclusively, but I have played it to generate a bit of wealth for LoD. I made an Iratha's Sorc and did quest bugged Mephi runs for rares. Good rares in classic (e.g. 30/20 Prismatic (All Res) shields) can trade for a pretty penny (especially early in the Ladder season), and aren't *that* rare. I traded them for fg on d2jsp.

It really is. Adding runes and runewords really made the game what it is.

Many will say 1.09 (and earlier) was the golden age. Runes and RWs existed then of course, but they didn't become what they are until 1.10.

I didn't play too much before 1.10, so I can't comment on that.

The great part about 2 is that there are items that a viable throughout the entire game. (or were) and power creep hadn't ruined everything. Sets were nice but kinda sucked which I thought was perfect.
I miss games where maybe an item that's half your level is still viable. Shaftstop/vamps days were glorious.

That's where Diablo III got things wrong for me, in the early days at least (haven't played since then). It tied success too closely to weapon damage, armor rating and primary stats, to the point where only end-game items would suffice.

In D2, weapon damage only really matters for physical characters and has no bearing on casters. Other modifiers besides damage are the order of the day (+skills, FCR, resistances, etc.), and they're available from about the mid-game onwards. Higher level items might be better (not always), but middle of the road stuff can be viable too.

Similarly for armor, the Defense rating isn't crucial. It helps (especially for Barbs and Paladins that can boost it high), but other modifiers are usually more important.

Items are also relatively class-agnostic in D2. A good sword for one physical attacker is generally good for them all (even if it's not ideal), for example. That goes doubly for caster items.

That reminds me of this image:

It's a bit biased, but it does make some good points.

I haven't played online for a number of years now (it was always on Ladder when it existed). I just stick to single player since I can't be bothered starting from scratch and enjoy some of the advantages (the "players" command, easy transferring of items, no lag or anti-bot measures, etc.).

I started back a couple of months ago myself, but I've burned myself out (as I often do). I've built up a nice collection of (self-found) stuff, particularly Runes / Rune Words. I recently did around 3k Lower Kurast runs and found 4x Vex, 2x Ohm, 3x Lo and 5x Sur. I also found a separate Jah, Ber and Vex. With those, I made Enigma, Faith, Forti, CoH, 2x Hoto, CtA and a couple of Griefs, with runes to spare.

I *may* start back on Ladder if I can be bothered. Online does have its advantages too of course, particularly the community aspect and the authenticity of items (self-finding shit on SP doesn't impress anyone since they think you just used Hero Editor). Some items just have to be traded for.
