I love the sense of adventure, the story (for a Zelda game at least, particularly the ending) and the world, but there are quite a few annoying aspects (e.g. being turned back if you go the "wrong" way for about the first half of the game, the Triforce hunt, relatively slow sailing, etc.) and disappointments (like the number of proper dungeons and their quality).

Overall, it's still a great game, but certainly not my favorite Zelda (or even 3D Zelda).

I had the first two. I liked the campaign in the first one and the multiplayer in the second.

It's been a while since I've played them, but I guess they were fairly typical of FPSs at the time. I'd recommend them. I imagine the multiplayer is defunct though (if not, the second's will likely be better / more active). As for the campaign, I didn't play much of the second's, so I'm not sure how it compares.

Mostly basic 2D games (Space Invaders, Pool, a canon / target shooting game, etc.). I also made a couple of 3D games (in the loosest sense of the word), one from scratch in OpenGL and the other using the Ogre 3D engine. They were basically tech demos to show graphics techniques (and Kinect integration for the second one). They were really terrible also.

Supposedly Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom has a great soundtrack. It certainly has some big names behind it:

Yuzo Koshiro
Motoi Sakuraba
Michiru Yamane
Keiki Kobayashi
Takeshi Yanagawa

The game itself is meant to be fantastic too. It's top of my wishlist.

TopicHaving enemies visible on the map is objectively better than random encounters

I agree. Visible enemies may cause some annoyances depending on how they're implemented (e.g. having to move several screens away or reset to respawn enemies or not being able to avoid certain encounters), but I definitely prefer them overall. I like the control they give you over what enemies you face (if any), as often you'll want to encounter a specific enemy (for a drop, steal, etc.). Even just seeing information about encounters or being able to view what you're encountering is nice and can allow for things like optional tough enemies a la Xenoblade.

Some of this can be emulated in a random encounter system, but ultimately it pales in comparison to the real thing.

That said, I don't mind random battles if the encounter rate is reasonable. Even better if there is an indicator showing when a battle is going to happen and there's some control over the encounter rate, like in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

Aside from the vocal minority on the web that trash it (and Nintendo fanboys), I think it's a very well liked console, and obviously it sold like hotcakes at the time. I certainly wouldn't call it underrated. Heck, I think it's behind perhaps only the SNES and PS2 in terms of how much it's rated.
TopicHollow Knight is better than any Castlevania or Metroid game
luigi13579

There's definitely an argument to be made for that (as Hollow Knight is fantastic), but I personally don't agree.

Firstly, I find Hollow Knight's abilities to be rather basic (although I feel the same to be the case for Castlevania), and there aren't that many of them. Metroid, on the other hand, has quite a few weird and wonderful power-ups: the Morph Ball (and its many functions like the Spider Ball and Boost Ball), Screw Attack, Ice Beam, X-ray Visor, etc.

Secondly, Hollow Knight doesn't allow much deviation from the intended path (I mostly mean in terms of the key power-ups). Not all Metroid games do that either, but Super and Prime certainly do (often unintentionally through glitches, but it's all the same), adding plenty of reply value and room for experimentation.

I think we all probably have different ideas about what makes a good Metroidvania. The above two aspects are a big deal for me (more generally, the power-ups and (open-ended) level design).

Also, anyone played the new Wonder Boy? I hear it's great.

It's been years since I last played it, so I'll probably be way off.

Ignoring strategies that break the game, I guess you should decide in advance what role each character will have (eventually you'll have 4) and build a varied party (e.g. a melee fighter, a defensive mage, an offensive mage, etc.).

As Tar says, you should be OK as long as you do anything that's really out there. Your options are limited for a while anyway as you unlock jobs gradually through the story.

The cool thing is that you can equip an ability from another class as long as you've learned it, so using a class for a bit and then ditching it isn't necessarily a waste.

As for specific classes, I remember the Time Mage being pretty good with its Quick spell, among others. I think Samurai and Ninjas are decent too. Oh, and Summoners.

The Summoner requires that you complete certain quests, so don't miss them. At least that class gives you an added incentive.

I've also used them pretty much since I got them.

I have quite a few great 4* ones on top of those now. Sirius (can't remember if it's enhanced), Soma Cruz (enhanced Dracula), Primal Groudon (enhanced Groudon IIRC, only 2 slots though), etc.

I hear that Light Suit (enhanced Dark Suit) is good but I haven't found it yet.

They would "fix" various sequence breaks and glitches (which would be a shame, as they're a big part of the game for many people, myself included). It's not really avoidable in some cases, as they're part of Super's engine.

As for what I'd want them to change/add:

- Better graphics obviously (my preference would be Fusion style pixel art, but they'd go with something more modern, which could also work)
- Show doors on the map
- Diagonal aiming without L/R, the ability to use missiles / super missiles / power bombs without toggling and whatever other control features the newer games have (maybe allow the old and new ways to please fans of both). Maybe an always run option
- An in-built randomizer and/or speedrun mode
- A little extra content
- Also, get rid of that last save point (or allow you to return)!

Warrior first to learn the ropes, then wizard all the way. Or just go for a wizard first if I'm feeling confident. Either way, I prefer wizards.

I find that wizards usually start a bit slow, but overtake warriors eventually (i.e. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards). Morrowind is a good example of this (Alchemy and Enchantment are broken, as are some magic schools, but it takes a bit of effort to get there and overcome early weaknesses).

For the first, I don't really watch many LPs, but I do like BikdipOnABus. He mostly plays older (particularly Nintendo) games. It goes from gen 3 (NES) to gen 6 (GCN) generally.

Game Sack look at older games predominantly, but you've probably seen them as they're fairly well known.
