I think Shenmue is worth a shout. It never got as popular as some of the games on the list, but it was definitely influential in terms of the scope of the game, the details and the way the world changed and grew, but it was also the first game with a budget of the scale it had (estimated around $50-80m back in 1998 iirc). Not to mention it can probably be attributed as popularising QTEs.

GTA3

You know, I'm really surprised I didn't think of SA1, and that nobody else mentioned it. It was the first proper 3D Sonic game, and people really liked it.

Yeah, but I thought SA1 was worth adding.

You know, some of the games on that list are in my top 10 of all time. Goldeneye...Super Mario 64...Sonic 1. Such superb games. Between those 3 games, I've probably got about 800 - 1,000 hours.

You know, some games have aged better than others, and I don't just mean the graphics. Pong is slightly pointless, but Space Invaders is probably still a good game, and Pac-Man as well, I think.

How is it? Great game for sure, but I don't see anything particularly important about it - yet. Importance in a historical context usually requires some time afterward to effectively judge the role it played in video gaming culture.

I see no reason why it should be included.

I must admit, although it will probably be pretty influential, it's too soon to say. But the strength of the game to actually play it, and how well people have responded...that's why I put it on the list.

FF7 was 80-145M in 1997, though only about 40-45M went into development with the rest marketing. And Pokemon Red/Blue was more expensive than many people realize, estimated around 50M in 1996.

You know, I hadn't even thought of that. I must admit, I really enjoyed that game...HOWEVER, there weren't enough DCs in circulation for many people to have played the game, plus, it didn't seem to influence future games much. I can only think of one Shenmue style game (other than Shenmue 2, obviously), and that's Heavy Rain.

Maybe none have done that kind of day-to-day stuff like that, but I was talking more in terms of the world itself and the way that it didn't feel like you were the only real person in it. You can speak to pretty much everyone, everyone went to certain places at certain times did certain things, certain places opened an closed at different times, there was in game seasons and people changed their clothing and habits.

It was, at least my knowledge the first (or at least first somewhat successful) game to offer most of these features, let alone all combined in such a detailed way. Even if it wasn't a record breaking commercial hit, it was pretty successful critically and there's been a wealth of games that have utilised a variety of those feature either individually or combined.

And failing all of that, as I said, it's at the very least a massive influence due to the Quick Time Events. Ever since Shenmue (which I'dargue is still the only game to do them right) they've been prevalent in games.

I don't understand why Mortal Kombat deserves to be on the list. Apart from the digitised actors and levels of violence, how was it better than / different to any other fighting game of the time? The only one I really got a chance to play was MK2, and it was fun, but not exactly revolutionary.

It's a central part of the console wars and it contributed to the creation of the ESRB.

Yeah, I'll accept Doom, MGS and Pokemon. Let's not kid around though, Minecraft really doesn't matter that much, and although I haven't played Fortnite, it's been largely denounced by serious games.

MGS is honestly nothing.

Like it's there and it has a fanbase but it's nothing truly giant, and I guess it was the first stealth game but the genre doesn't seem to stem from it, they all just kinda sprout up on their own.

I would consider it like Mass Effect, where it's a big successful franchise but doesn't deserve a spot amongst the titans of gaming.

Minecraft however is one of the highest grossing games of all time. In fact it's either #2 or #3.
