I haven't played online for a number of years now (it was always on Ladder when it existed). I just stick to single player since I can't be bothered starting from scratch and enjoy some of the advantages (the "players" command, easy transferring of items, no lag or anti-bot measures, etc.).

I started back a couple of months ago myself, but I've burned myself out (as I often do). I've built up a nice collection of (self-found) stuff, particularly Runes / Rune Words. I recently did around 3k Lower Kurast runs and found 4x Vex, 2x Ohm, 3x Lo and 5x Sur. I also found a separate Jah, Ber and Vex. With those, I made Enigma, Faith, Forti, CoH, 2x Hoto, CtA and a couple of Griefs, with runes to spare.

I *may* start back on Ladder if I can be bothered. Online does have its advantages too of course, particularly the community aspect and the authenticity of items (self-finding shit on SP doesn't impress anyone since they think you just used Hero Editor). Some items just have to be traded for.

The thrill of the drop is probably one of the most addicting part of the game.

The great part about 2 is that there are items that a viable throughout the entire game. (or were) and power creep hadn't ruined everything. Sets were nice but kinda sucked which I thought was perfect.
I miss games where maybe an item that's half your level is still viable. Shaftstop/vamps days were glorious.

A Sorc could easily stomp normal and nightmare mode easily with little to no gear. It's hell where they crank up the difficulty to an extreme and you need OP runewords to get by.

I think that's sorta true with respect to single player. The story, atmosphere, presentation, all much stronger in the first.

Diablo II is fine as those go and has much better gameplay though

Definitely. And don't forget those crafts too! And gambled/shopped items!

I particularly enjoy crafting Caster amulets. I've made some pretty good ones in SP (and online previously).

I've never played it exclusively, but I have played it to generate a bit of wealth for LoD. I made an Iratha's Sorc and did quest bugged Mephi runs for rares. Good rares in classic (e.g. 30/20 Prismatic (All Res) shields) can trade for a pretty penny (especially early in the Ladder season), and aren't *that* rare. I traded them for fg on d2jsp.

Many will say 1.09 (and earlier) was the golden age. Runes and RWs existed then of course, but they didn't become what they are until 1.10.

I didn't play too much before 1.10, so I can't comment on that.

That's where Diablo III got things wrong for me, in the early days at least (haven't played since then). It tied success too closely to weapon damage, armor rating and primary stats, to the point where only end-game items would suffice.

In D2, weapon damage only really matters for physical characters and has no bearing on casters. Other modifiers besides damage are the order of the day (+skills, FCR, resistances, etc.), and they're available from about the mid-game onwards. Higher level items might be better (not always), but middle of the road stuff can be viable too.

Similarly for armor, the Defense rating isn't crucial. It helps (especially for Barbs and Paladins that can boost it high), but other modifiers are usually more important.

Items are also relatively class-agnostic in D2. A good sword for one physical attacker is generally good for them all (even if it's not ideal), for example. That goes doubly for caster items.

I dont know why I play diablo 3 when diablo 2 is better.

But I will say diablo 3's combat is fun.

I wish a remake of 2 would consist of the leveling and skill trees with the pace and speed of 3.

Doing full clears, /players 8, is still a good way to spend a week or 3. Haven't done it in a few years . . . kinda want to roll a sorc now.

I wish RPG devs would look back at DnD or Diablo II or something to get over rampant stat inflation.

Granted, Diablo III has infinitely scaling content with Greater Rifts and Diablo II has not.

With the later, there are only three difficulties and once you kill Baal on Hell difficulty you do the same thing but only aiming to do it faster.

But D2 will always feel better single-player than D3, though the idea of playing Diablo for single-player is widely mocked these days after D2 multiplayer got so popular.
