The PS1 had Hogs of War multiplayer!

Plus multiplayer fighting games, racers, shooters, sports games, etc. They weren't always as good as their N64 counterparts (with the exception of the fighting games and possibly sports games), but it did have its own multiplayer options that I got a lot of enjoyment from.

New Vegas followed by Oblivion.

NV is my favorite game there, but there's also a lot of room for improvement. Aside from the usual like graphics, bugs and core gameplay, a lot of content was cut (particularly on the Legion side of things) and could be added back in.

If it did well, it could also lead to a new Obsidian Fallout game, which I'd love to happen.

The good thing about X/Y was the selection of Pokemon. I think you could get 400+ without trading. Also, the new Pokemon, however few, were some of the better designs.

Feature-wise, it was decent too.

The big disappointment was the post-game/optional content. The Looker quest was a nice change of pace though.

  • NAM (a.k.a. Napalm)
  • Super Robot Wars 4 (I've played other SRW games but I think this is the one people are least likely to have played)
  • Cross Edge
Not sure exactly how obscure they all are, but I may as well throw them out there and see who's played them)

It's actually one of my favorite gens, and I started with Red. I do agree with the speed complaint in D/P though.

As much as I loved G/S/C (probably my favorite gen along with R/B/Y at the time), in hindsight, in gen 4 I prefer the level curve (peaking at the 60s rather than the 40s) and Pokemon distribution. The trainers also aren't quite as dumb as in the first two gens, and can occasionally not be total pushovers (that's mainly Cynthia to be fair). And of course, the physical/special split is great.

I quite like the size and diversity of Sinnoh, even if the HM requirements can sometimes be a pain.

The Battle Frontier is pretty good in Plat (and the Underground is an OK distraction). The Vs. Seeker is possibly my favorite way to rebattle trainers.

As for the online, it was certainly better than what we had up to then (i.e. no online).

Amazing games. 1 > 2 > 3 for me. The first is in my top 5 along with Super, with Echoes not far behind.

It was a big surprise, because before release it seemed like a huge mistake to go down that path, but the first game certainly delivered, minus one or two issues.

The atmosphere is off the charts, thanks the graphics, music and sound effects all being on point. The power-ups have mostly been translated as well as possible (with one or two absent). The level design is great, giving us those "a-ha!" moments when we work out where to use a newly acquired power-up, plenty of interesting ways to use power-ups, and the same joy of exploration from the 2D games. Sequence breaking is surprisingly good, with plenty of ways to break the game open.

The bosses are... alright? 2 certainly improves on them.

I wouldn't go that far (well, it's not a million miles away).

Samus certainly controls better than ever, and I enjoyed the bosses more than most previous 2D Metroid bosses (although that style of boss isn't for everyone).

That said, I think the level design was better in Super and Zero Mission (but it's still decent in this one), although the sequence breaks in Dread are a pleasant surprise. There are quite a few one-way paths (some that remain for good) and places where you're locked in, more so than in Super and Zero Mission at the least. Plus, the path forward is generally placed very conveniently (e.g. teleporters that take you where you need to go), so if you like figuring out where to go, it may not feel quite as satisfying.

To be fair though, the others are quite linear without sequence breaks, even Super.

A few things are a matter of taste, like the melee counter (especially against bosses, where it's occasionally required), the music (most people prefer that in previous games), EMMIs (there isn't a huge amount of variety with them), Adam, the (over?)use of 2-way teleporters/trams, the fiddling with buttons/levers to change the environment, etc. These things will no doubt greatly offend the purists.

Don't get me wrong though, it's a great Metroid game, and near the top of my 2D Metroid ranking.

I wouldn't worry too much about playing the others first, except possibly Super (and 1/2 if you want to play them). Some find the controls in that one hard to adjust to (with the run button, switching between weapons with Select, etc.), others would say "git gud".

Damn, that sucks (and doesn't bode well for sequence breaking). One of the best things in Super, Prime and Zero Mission was that any expansion gave you the ability.

It's really good so far (just got the scan ability in what seems to possibly be a minor sequence break).

I have a few nitpicks, but nothing too big. Adam's voice is unnecessarily annoying, I don't like the two-way trams/teleporters (I'd rather have more seamless transitions between areas), the E.M.M.I.s aren't as interesting as the SA-X (nor is the story as a whole as interesting as Fusion's so far), etc.
