2, 3 and 6 are my top 3 anyway, and all have their own advantages and disadvantages. 2 has my favorite Navis, scenario and world. 3 has my favorite post-game content. 6 has the best features and the fewest frustrating parts (e.g. the FreezeMan/BubbleMan/FlameMan parts in 2 and 3 and the NaviCust program to go on narrow walkways in 3).

Overall, I usually go for 3, because the post-game is really that good. 6 I sometimes choose for its particularly enjoyable core gameplay. 2 is the first one I played, so I have the most fond memories of that one.

The left-leaning Guardian leaves out a fairly important piece of additional context

They touched on that, aside from the part saying he froze.

The initial article had more info:

Despite the fact that the termination letter focuses most of its attention on the decision not to shoot Williams, department officials subsequently told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the incident was not a primary factor in his termination.

Officials cited two other incidents involving Mader. Only one is mentioned in the letter, in just two sentences.

By contrast, on the Williams shooting the letter reads that Mader should be dismissed from employment due to to negligence on his part during the incident that occurred on 6 May 2016, in which a fellow officer had to react and unfortunately take the life of the suspect.

After Maders termination, officials said Mader froze during the incident. They also called him a disgruntled employee and a bad cop.

TopicFake news sharing in US is a rightwing thing, says study
luigi13579

Yeah, this has been doing the rounds over the past few days.

Having read the study, it's maybe not as convincing or clear about its methods as I'd like. It's an interesting piece of research, but I'm not sure what it is beyond that. To be totally honest, I'm as anti-Trump as they come, and my default assumption is that Trump supporters share a shit-ton of "fake news" and conspiracy theories. I don't think for one minute they're unique in that, but it's definitely the sense I get and I do think they're particularly bad for it. I just wish the foundations of the study were a bit stronger.

On to the study, the "junk news" sites in the list are mostly right-wing (which isn't necessarily a sign of bias if those sites genuinely are less reputable), because they breached at least 3 of 5 metrics they came up with. However, as far as I'm aware, they don't show exactly what metrics each site breached, and how they determined those breaches (I could be mistaken). Also, what sites did they eliminate from the list on the basis that they didn't meet these criteria (i.e. what was the full list of sites before filtering)?

It's also helpful to be clear about exactly what the study states:

On Twitter, the Trump Support Group shares 95% of the junk news sites on the watch list, and accounted for 55% of junk news traffic in the sample.

So the 95% figure that has been banded about is the percentage of the sampled sites that they shared content from, not the actual raw amount as some have stated (which is 55%). Also, is something necessarily junk news just because it comes from a "junk news" site? Note the difference between "fake news" and "junk news". I think their term is a bit more inclusive (i.e. news that isn't necessarily outright false, but put across in a misleading way, with few sources, anonymous authors, overly emotional and partisan headlines, etc.).

The sample is also fairly limited:

From this reduced dataset of 10,691 [Facebook] pages, we collected all posts from the 90 days between October 20, 2017 and January 19, 2018

This reduced the dataset to 13,477 Twitter users.

They had a dataset a few times larger and filtered it down. The time period was the ~3 months before the SOTU.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

Thoughts?

Even assuming being gay is purely genetic, wouldn't it still be possible to have gay offspring without actually being gay (it'd be more likely, even, given there are more straight people)? There's also the reverse: i.e. that being gay doesn't necessarily mean you'll have gay offspring either. Ergo, the gay population won't necessarily go down.

Not to mention that many don't want to get married, and even if someone does, there's surrogacy. Supporting something doesn't mean you think everyone should do it.

None of this even necessarily implies homophobia anyway. I mean, what is the alternative here? Outlawing gay marriage (and the repression that it would necessarily entail)? Unless you think the latter isn't homophobic, then everyone is, by this logic.

I feel the opposite to be honest (as long as unused characters get EXP too). I like having options, especially on subsequent playthroughs. Obviously it sucks when some party members are way worse than the others, but I don't think that alone is an indictment of having party choices. There usually still enough viable characters for it be worth it, even if there is an 'optimal' party. Some games are better than others at that.

I'm also a sucker for unlockable / optional characters. Discovering them is a nice surprise. They do have their pitfalls though, like generally not having a big role in the story to reduce the number of variables (see: Vincent and Yuffie, and similarly FFVI's optional characters).

TopicWould you like to see another Final Fantasy with the ADB(FF12) battle system?
luigi13579
02/03/18 6:51:25 PM

Sure. The system isn't really that different from the ATB system of old, with the obvious exception being that you can move around with no battle transitions. There are also a bunch of flaws that could easily be rectified in future. Gambits weren't everyone's cup of tea, but the underlying system is separate from them. A hypothetical future game wouldn't need to be built around them. Technically they were optional even in FFXII, although not using them brings extra challenge (which some would welcome).

While not my favorite FF game (it's somewhere in the middle for me, behind VI-X), I still very much enjoyed it. Exploring the world and completing side quests / hunts are a great deal of fun. The story has its moments, but the storytelling and pacing leave a lot to be desired. The change of director shows.

Nah. I do agree that it will probably change though. The number of Pokemon is fast becoming prohibitive, unless Game Freak just reuse the 3D models they currently have, at least for the time being.

Their alternative options would be:

- Stop creating new Pokemon and focus on other content / features (with maybe an 'ultimate' game where you can go to multiple regions or something similar).
- Keep creating new Pokemon every gen, but *only* let you catch the new ones (similar to get the Black/White approach). They could treat this as a reset of sorts and let the new Pokemon accumulate again.

It's hard to imagine either to be honest. I think Nintendo might do both: the former as a one-off and the latter for the mainline games.

I'm not ideologically opposed to random battles (although controllable encounter rates and similar features seem almost mandatory nowadays), but I tend to prefer other systems like enemies in the field that you have to touch or get close to.

Relient_K posted...
Random encounters make since in several games such as pokemom.

Pokemon is an interesting case in that it has a sort of hybrid system, with various other ways of encountering Pokemon (e.g. fishing), some of which actually show visible enemies in the field.

I particularly liked ORAS's approach where some Pokemon would actually be visible in the grass, with the DexNav giving extra information on them (and a screen showing what Pokemon you've already found, greyed outlines of Pokemon you haven't, and medals for certain combinations of Pokemon).
