I heard the stat as "firearm discharges in a school," which struck me as being a bit contrived, but still not exactly a good thing. Regardless of what's being shot or why, there really shouldn't be any sort of shooting going on at a school (rifle clubs aside, which are a tightly controlled exception that can't in any way be compared to the statistic cited here).

Also, the recent Florida shooting specifically happened because the FBI weren't doing their jobs to stop this event from happening.

As damning as "FBI investigated Cruz saying he was going to shoot up a school" sounds, it's not actually realistic to have expected them to follow through on that. If the FBI conducted a full investigation every time some edgelord suggested they'd commit a school shooting online, nothing else would ever get done. They have finite resources, and that means they have to triage threats based on how credible they seem. As with any triage, some things that turn out to be serious are going to slip through the cracks. That's just inevitable.

Could the FBI have intervened? Maybe. But getting them to a point where they could do so reliably would require far more of a surveillance state than most would find acceptable, even in the name of preventing tragedies like this.

Which is actually a decent pro-gun control analogy. Cars don't get banned because of road accidents, but people who use cars irresponsibly (or are otherwise incapable of driving safely) do have the privilege of driving taken away from them. Nobody gets up in arms about that, why get so uppity about applying similar restrictions to guns?

LinkPizza posted...
But isn't it kinda true that those lunatics would still be able to get guns. I mean, if they try hard enough, they could probably still get one.

Yes and no. Most arguments along that line are very short-sighted, and look only at what would happen if guns were suddenly made illegal and every law-abiding citizen turned theirs in. In practice, every single illegally-obtained gun was obtained legally at some point. If you cut off the legal supply, the illegal supply will also be cut off, making it so prohibitively difficult to get one that the vast majority of criminals won't be able to (and those that can aren't people the average Joe would be able to defend themselves against anyway, because they're going to be the more serious criminals with some kind of organized backing).

Obviously, it's not that simple. That would be a long-term trickle-down effect, and there'd need to be a massive push of anti-gun enforcement to get the existing supply of illegal guns off the streets before disarming the people who need them for self-defense. But fundamentally, if there are no legal guns, there won't be any illegal guns either. That's just common sense.

The thickness of the pancake is a consequence of how much the batter's own weight is able to squish itself over the course of the cooking, which is going to be unchanging within any given batch. The only way to make a pancake thicker without changing the batter's consistency would be to pour it into some kind of mold that prevented it from expanding horizontally. The only way to make it thinner would be to spread it out (the extreme of this being crepe-making, though obviously that's starting with a much thinner batter than most pancakes).

It's also significantly more efficient to only have a few people going up to the counter to place orders than to have every single person at every single table doing so, since that allows some degree of coordination that customers won't have.

1812 isn't an opera.

Conceptually, it's an alright idea, but the variety of instruments needed to simulate entire orchestras wouldn't really be viable. Even Rock Band had some resistance to the idea of having to own two guitars, a drum kit, and a microphone to get the full experience; much more than that would never be able to gain traction. Just focusing on vocals could work, though.

Homosexuality is natures way to prevent overpopulation.

Evolution doesn't really care about overpopulation. The more plausible explanation I've heard for homosexuality is that, in a society (most of whom will be related to some extent or another, so kin selection will be at work), it's highly beneficial to have a small number of individuals without children to help raise other children. You see the same thing more broadly with other altruistic traits in other species: altruistic individuals are themselves less fit than selfish ones, evolutionary speaking, but overall populations tend to be fittest with somewhere in the range of 10-20% of their individuals being altruistic.

Basically, from an evolutionary standpoint, gay people exist so your gay uncle is free to babysit you because he doesn't have his own kids.
