@adjl u should totally check it out sometime

I've been keeping an eye on that one. It doesn't seem to be getting anything more than a 10% discount any time soon, which makes me think it's going the Rimworld route (similar philosophy to Factorio in that they aren't using sales to manipulate people into buying it, but easing up a bit on that so people that wishlist it will still be reminded of it), but it certainly seems like it'll be worth the price. I figure I'll take the plunge if it happens to go on sale when I'm in the mood to buy it.

Why did you get the wrong test?

I can't speak for his area, but around here, anyone that's symptomatic is directed to get a PCR test, which can take 1-3 days to process (that post was at the 2-day mark), depending on how busy the lab is. Rapid tests take less than an hour, but they're more prone to false negatives, so they're generally only advised for low-risk people that are testing as a proactive precautionary measure, rather than for people that are at higher risk.

My second dose was unpleasant enough that I'll hold off on a booster shot until they're actually definitively recommended. Once they are, I'll be in there as soon as I can, but unless there are actually clear, significant benefits, it's not worth it.

Of course, even then, I still might not. My province is currently average 1-2 new cases per day, which isn't exactly high risk. We'll probably see a fourth wave when students come back next month, though, so perhaps it'll be recommended then. Either way, I'll be listening to local recommendations.

That's understandable. As tempting as it is to just treat everyone that's hesitant about the vaccines like they're idiots, humans really are inherently bad at risk analysis. Not everyone has the ability to be reassured by numbers that show vaccination is clearly the safer option, which is something that's difficult but important to sympathize with in interacting with skeptics. Actually seeing the near-worst case scenario arise and be dealt with so trivially does a lot more to assuage those concerns than any number of statistics will. On the flip side, this is why so many families are making the decision to get vaccinated after a family member dies of Covid: Until they actually see the disease first-hand, it's hard to recognize just how dangerous it can be.

So is the 4th wave gonna be worse than the 3rd? Starting to look it

Assessing it very subjectively, the slope of daily case counts looks shallower this time than for wave 3. That doesn't conclusively mean anything as far as peak case rates go, but it does suggest it won't be quite as bad.

Perhaps more significantly, deaths haven't been spiking nearly as hard as case rates. Part of that is because there's a lag between spikes in cases and spikes in deaths, but the fact that a decent number of people are vaccinated is going to help a lot. Not as much as it should, because vaccination rates are not where they should be, but it'll make a big difference.

Nah, there have been multiple, clear waves in case numbers. I might actually call this the 5th wave, since there was a pretty decent surge in April on the way down from the peak of the third wave (probably Easter travel), but there are definitely discrete peaks that can be identified as waves.

Yep, that's about what I was expecting. The first wave was a desperate scramble to catch up and figure out how to save patients with far too few resources, so mortality was much higher, but cases numbers stayed fairly low because everything was locked down hard and almost everyone was being super careful. By the second, infrastructure and strategies were in place to save patients, but restrictions had relaxed and people were getting more complacent/frustrated, so case numbers exploded. For the third, restrictions are even more relaxed and people are even more complacent/frustrated, driving cases up, but vaccines are widespread, dramatically reducing mortality rate. If you added a chart of vaccination rate to that comparison, I believe you'd see that number climb as the second wave shrank.

yeah, teleconference with doctor then recommendation to go to the emergency room and a couple of hours / tests given the OK. Just monitoring.

Really happy with that turn-around though.

As scary as they sound, that's what a lot of these blood clotting issues amount to. They're serious enough that they do warrant a hospital visit, but it's exceedingly rare for them to be genuinely dangerous or beyond treatment. They're really not bad enough to warrant avoiding the vaccine, even if you do end up being unlucky enough to have them happen at all.

as for why that is, who knows.

Hospitals are better prepared (both in terms of procedures and equipment), testing infrastructure has improved enough to allow earlier detection of infections, masks have become widespread (even if the virus gets past the mask, having a lower initial viral load improves the prognosis)... More recently, vaccines have been quite thoroughly demonstrated to dramatically reduce the severity of any breakthrough infections, which is making a huge difference in the current wave. It's a number of factors, really.

since cases are spiking again but deaths are not.

Deaths are starting to creep up. Not as strongly as case numbers are (yesterday's 7-day daily case average was 110,000, compared to 20,000 a month prior, while yesterday's death average was 516, compared to 205 a month prior), but a delay is to be expected because it tends not to kill people immediately after diagnosis. I doubt deaths will end up spiking as hard as cases do, in the long run, but that's mostly because some of those cases are vaccinated people that are vastly less likely to die. I don't think it indicates much about Delta's deadliness.

Indeed. With no other changes, increasing the amount of insulin in your blood will cause weight gain. In practice, because increasing the amount of insulin in your blood affects your appetite, you'll often self-correct the amount you're eating and ultimately end up stabilizing at a similar weight to what you had prior to starting on it, but that's introducing extra variables. All other things being equal, starting insulin can be expected to cause weight gain.

tbh, that would make more sense, although even then you'd have issues because games aren't a consistent, static thing.

I think it'd still work. Presumably, any sort of "e-lympics" would change which games were featured each time they happened based on what's popular at the time (I'd expect, if they're doing it every 4 years, they'd decide the games 2 years before each one). That would have the unfortunate effect of effectively forcibly retiring "e-thletes" whose game of choice fell out of vogue, so you wouldn't have the kind of consistent presence regular Olympians have, but that's not that unusual when a game stops being popular enough to attract viewers in the broader E-sports scene.

You can't necessarily say "having an IQ of 94 makes you dumb compared to everyone else," but you can say "your IQ has gone from 94 to 87, which is a measurable decline in that aspect of your cognitive function." Ideally, there would be other metrics of cognitive function to get a more comprehensive picture of the effects, but losing an average of 7 IQ points is still significant and worth reporting.

79% of COVID hospitalizations and deaths are from obese and older people.

There's likely to be some bias, but even eliminating 10% of the republican base (which requires the assumptions of 100% infection, 10% mortality, and 100% of the mortality being republicans, all three of which are very generous assumptions) isn't going to be enough to sway most republican-dominated areas.

Some Democratic gains wouldn't surprise me, but I don't expect anything tremendously significant.

Presidential elections? Fairly slim. I don't expect total deaths to break more than 800-850k (throwback to when Trump was confident they'd never break 100k >.>), maybe a million if it really drags on. The 2020 election had a difference of ~7 million votes overall, while the 2016 one differed by about 3 million. Even if we were to assume that 100% of those deaths belonged to one party or the other (which is flat-out incorrect), that's not going to be enough to make up those differences.

More local elections? It's not impossible, but areas where the vast majority of people dying are of similar political affiliations are generally areas where the vast majority of people in general share that same affiliation anyway, and Covid's not killing enough people to change that. I expect a few elections will be influenced by Covid deaths in particularly contentious areas, but nothing on a really large scale.

Jail as a punishment is going to do nothing to change their behaviour.

I voted in favor just because I want to see the Olympic Committee try to 'grade' something like Pokemon in the same manner that they grade gymnastics.

There wouldn't really be a need for subjective judging, unless we bring Minecraft to the Olympics (... I might watch that >.>). Pretty much any competitive game has scoring and/or victory conditions built right into it.

but they are only looking at what the filter catches

They're looking at whatever their filters catch. This is just one of many filters, one which they're advertising because it makes people feel better about the data that's being collected. Others are less PR-friendly, so they don't get advertised.

I hope y'all like buying your own power plants!

I mean, that's basically what putting solar panels on your roof does. That is actually going to be reality for many houses in the not-too-distant future.

what privacy does this violate?

The part where they look at everything in your phone regardless of how guilty you are.

I get that, but the fairies are a fairly large part of the game so having to ignore all of it makes it feel emptier. In general I prefer when higher difficulties make the enemies stronger and smarter rather than restricting the player a lot.

I feel that. There were some that just straight up made the game easier (like the one that made every spike in the game disappear), and penalizing the player for using those makes sense, but the ones that gave smaller stat boosts were a way to customize the character, and taking them away meant "optimal" play was exactly the same experience for everybody.

That's one of the reasons (the main one being that I'm just not good enough, but we'll ignore that) I never pushed into really high Heat in Hades. At the higher Heat levels, you no longer get to choose most of the things that really define a build, which takes out a lot of what makes Roguelites fun to play in the first place (to say nothing of dramatically increasing the chance of getting RNG screwed).

As of we don't have all your dataz anyway...

Yeah, this makes it considerably less of a specific concern. They're not ramping up the data collection, they're just implementing a filter on the data they're already collecting. The fact that they can do this without ramping up data collection is a privacy concern, but not this specific filter.

dude I blocked the aquarium on purpose

Which dramatically impairs your ability to count fish, such that commenting on the number of fish you've seen means virtually nothing.
