once you get a gf

I almost had a girlfriend a month ago, girlfriend is just friend with girl in front of it. Friend is code for a person that will leave you like garbage at a curb the second you stop entertaining them.

Computers are wonderful friends, did you know? They're just like people, maybe even better.

I'm not getting roses, but I am going to be making homemade chocolate-dipped lavender marshmallows this weekend (they have to set overnight, and the weekend's far more conducive to that than last night would have been). I also stuck a bunch of little heart-shaped notes in her lunch tupperwares for her to be surprised by later. You should be more creative in your gifts.

This.

Plenty of women dont expect lavish gifts every holiday. Plenty of women are perfectly happy just staying in, cooking dinner together, watching a movie, cuddling...

Find a woman who doesnt place so much emphasis on material things.

It's all about the person. I love the person I'm with, so this holiday is awesome for that. She didn't ask for anything and we both treated each other with gifts, food, etc. Love is so beautiful, especially when it's true.
I've always liked this holiday, single or otherwise. Though, I haven't celebrated on the day with a girlfriend yet. This year it was on the weekend and she's getting flowers today.
Next year, I'm thinking I'll be celebrating in person on the day.

It's commercialized so the day should be blamed.

All holidays are. That means next to nothing.

Commercialism leans heavily on marketing and advertising. Advertisements are nothing more than suggestions. Sales pitches. Some are more effective than others at being enticing, but at the end of the day the consumer has a choice in making a purchase.

People still have a choice In whom they date, and they have a choice in whether theyre going to expect gifts or to have a lot of money spent on them. If youre dating someone with overwhelming or unrealistic expectations, and they wont have a conversation with you about it to come into agreement on what holidays mean to you (and your budget), then youre likely involved with the wrong sort of person, and youre better off finding someone better suited to you.

The artificial demand that has been introduced by commercilalizing everything is still artificial as long as you find a like-minded partner. This is why open communication is vital to a healthy relationship. Stuff like this should be discussed, and even when youre in love with someone you have to know where youre willing to make compromise, and have the wisdom to know when its better to end a relationship, even a good one, rather than have something be a thorn in your side for a needlessly prolonged time.

It's easy to hate on. It's also really easy to just make or get a small gift and spend time together. I spent about 40 for my guy to get him a few small things and made him a card. Then I'll be delivering it in person after work and we get some time together. Pretty sure he'll enjoy all of it.

I bet my gf doesn't even remember it's Valentine's Day today, she's awful with dates. We never make a big deal out of it in any case. We both agreed that stressing out over finding the perfect gift for whichever holiday basically just takes something that should be fun and turns it into a chore. The real display of love is spending time together, those are the memories that last.

The perfect gift is asking what they want. No stress at all.

Sure, this is an option, though depending on the person the answer may often be that they can't think of anything. If my gf sees something that she wants, she'll usually just buy it herself. This is one of the biggest issues with the idea of the "perfect gift", not only do you have to find something that someone would love, it also has to be something they wouldn't find themselves. Add in the constraint that it has to occur near the time of a major holiday and you've got a recipe for stress for sure.

Also, IMO, one of the best things about being in a relationship is that it can expand your horizons. I've seen and done a number of things with my gf that I'd never have done on my own. Sometimes there might be something that you think you wouldn't like that you actually turn out to enjoy. The best gifts are often like this, but of course you can't get it right every time, you just have to appreciate it when it happens.
