what was the point of the fucking tax breaks if you're just going to add a tax somewhere else?

jeeeesus fuck what is this guy doing

why don't you ... you know.. reallocate funds in your budget to pay for infrastructure? maybe cut the defense spending that is 18x higher than any other country and shift those funds where we really need them?

nah, let just add a 25 per gallon gas tax. k.

Aye. I couldn't help but wonder the same thing. For better or worse, being a Californian I'm already accustomed to $3-4 per gallon prices. Hell, the few times it went below $3 I thought there was something wrong with the pump when it auto-stopped at $40ish instead of $60ish.

To be fair I remember reading somewhere that the tax used for that currently hasnt been updated since the 80s. So while this shit would piss me off its pribably overdue.

But yeah, its astounding that with the military budget that inflated that the first thing they do would be an increase of that much.

ANd never mind. I guess it was 1993. I didnt read the article first.

The concern I have with this though is the taxes that's meant for one aspect of society isn't always used for that aspect of society.

EDIT: I do wonder how society would be like if instead of voting for certain bills or spending, the individual citizens be allowed to specify where their tax money goes to when they file their taxes. As to how that will actually work out I cannot say but it's just a curious thought. Hell, what if there was no taxes and we're just allowed to donate to the aspect(s) of society that agree with? Of course that will probably lead to the downfall of society within weeks, if not days.

On another note, I do donate to my local high school music program on a monthly basics and I find it disheartening when I see teachers asking for donations for their classes.

Well if you remove things like income and estate taxes and shift them to things like sales and gas taxes then you've effectively pushed some of the tax burden off the rich and onto the poor.

Plus CAD isn't worth the same as USD.

With the exchange rate it's about $3.33 US per gallon of regular.

Or in my case $3.91 US per gallon of premium

Miles per gallon?

Anyway, Los Angeles prices now are about $3.40 a gallon for regular/87 octane. Assuming my math is right that comes to about....

$3.40 per 3.79 litre or

$0.90 per litre or

0.64 pound per litre.....?

Is that 1.10 dollars, pounds, or something else?

America ditching isolationism benefitted nobody. Everything is vastly more unstable today than it otherwise probably would've been globally.

WWI would have almost certainly ended in a more even peace treaty without any US involvement (including smuggling arms in passenger ships), so it's very unlikely there'd have been much (if any) fuel for the Nazi fire a couple of decades later. Then the east... Stalin was happy to sit behind his iron curtain and marvel at his version of Russia. He didn't want a war with Europe or to "unite all the workers of the world" like Trotsky. His agenda was based on paranoia rather than the desire for conquest. At worst, if there still was a WWII, it would've probably been "everyone versus the USSR" anyway, which is still better than several genocides and a cold war.

Most likely, Russia actually flat out denied they had soldiers of fortune in Syria, but our military confirmed them to be. Russia doesn't want to escalate things with us. I'd imagine some folks will be busting out torches and pitchforks if this was the case. Still, I've read some privately own roads in the States are in better conditions than the publicly owned and maintained roads and only those using said roads would be paying for it.

I personally wouldn't mind if Los Angeles freeways become privately own if it speeds up the construction in some areas and fixes any ongoing issues. I don't mind paying taxes, it's a necessary "evil". I just want to know my taxes goes to what it is meant to be used for.

Yup. The Los Angeles County has a coinless system in-place called the FasTrak. You put in X dollars into your account and carry around a device in your vehicle. When you drive in the express lane and go under certain signs your car kinda get scanned and X dollars is deducted from your account.

The system also kinda uses the "honor system" in that you can set the device to say you have only one, two, or three passengers and you'll be discounted certain amount based on that. Prices also varies by time.

This country makes too much damn money to have the infrastructure be this awful and still worry about that dumbass wall. If shooting bring up gun control then its just gonna take one bridge to fall into a river or a highway collapse worse than the one in Atlanta to finally make people notice.

How so? That's an issue the users of the vehicles/accounts will need to deal with. I wouldn't blame the system for this. If I borrow my sister's car and her device/account get charged for my driving, I'll just reimburse her the amount while topping off her gas. If it's a company vehicle, I'd imagine the driver wouldn't be concern with the charges made on the device/account/pass.

That'll be up to the restaurant to decide and whether or not said consumers feels it is worth having the food delivered or getting it themselves. Personally, I'll be fine paying more for delivery on the occasional Amazon orders for example if it means me paying nothing on roads I do not use.

So a quick check shows that the gas tax funnels directly into the Highway Trust Fund. I dont know enough about government spending to know if they can use that money for alternative uses though.

i bet that's one of those funds they "borrow" from in a deficit and never pay back lol

I can't recall 100% but the gas tax in California which was meant to go toward improving the roads and such was supposedly reallocated to other uses not related to improving said roads. Of course I do not know if said gas tax went into the general funds and thus any department can touch or if it went into a specific fund but still got reallocated anyway.
