This (aka 16,7%) is the only correct answer.

That is the chance of rolling a 6 on the Nth roll. That's not what he's asking. He's asking the chance of rolling one 6 in N rolls, which very much is not 1/6 unless N=1. The Gambler's Fallacy is a matter of thinking that the next roll is more likely to be 6 because the last five rolls haven't been, not a matter of thinking that you're more likely to see at least one 6 in 100 rolls than in 1 roll.

At least someone was paying attention in stats to understand what a binomial distribution was.

Most of my practice with this didn't come from stats so much as from video games. I often calculated these probabilities to figure out how unlucky I'd been to not have seen a certain item drop yet in WoW, as well as using the corresponding logarithmic equation to figure out roughly how many runs a given item could be expected to take. WoW was a long time ago (I quit in July 2009), but these principles still come up often enough in other games that I'll break out the calculator now and then.

Breaking dress codes is not acceptable.

Legalistic morality is a terribly lazy way to approach such matters. More often than not (especially when it comes to schools), dress codes are completely arbitrary, with no practical consequences for violating them beyond whatever punishment has been arbitrarily attached to that violation. To prioritize that over a religious belief (which are often similarly arbitrary, but a central component of how one lives one's life and therefore more meaningful at a personal level) is just silly. Requiring him to shave to be a firefighter or work in some other job that requires respirator use? Sure. That's a practical reason. But here, there's nothing beyond "do it because I said so" from a handful of school administrators who are throwing their weight around.

So for six rolls, that would be 66.5%

This. (1/6)^n would give you the chance of rolling N sixes in N rolls.

I guess probably my first one, which was a 1998-era Samsung flip phone with an antenna I could pull out. No camera and texts were limited to 120 characters, which was pretty limiting. That one died in 2011 (rubber bit around the microphone degraded and clogged it up so I couldn't be heard in phone calls, which made it pretty useless), and I replaced it with another Samsung flip phone that had a camera and could send longer texts, which was nice. That one had a hinge crack and wear out after 8 years and I just replaced it this summer with an LG G7 One. No complaints yet.

Of course, that first one was really only the worst because the technology has improved since then, so I'm not sure that's the fairest comparison.

I don't like the concept of smart/not-smart honestly. I think it usually actually comes down to patience not something like IQ. I think some people have been told so many times that they're not smart that they've lost all willingness to even try as soon as something seems even the tiniest bit complicated, and it triggers a sort of anxiety in them. if you can get them to actually try, anyone can understand anything if both people have the patience for working through it.

Pretty much. There are some things people just have mental blocks on (often seen with math), where even patiently working through it isn't enough to succeed, but for the most part, "you're not smart" boils down to "you can't do this as fast as most people so you shouldn't try," which doesn't help anyone except the teachers that are too lazy to do their jobs properly.

It's less that they want to focus on Mario Kart and more that Miyamoto doesn't believe there's any room to improve on GX and therefore wants to close the book on the series rather than create something he knows will be inferior. Given that basically nobody at Nintendo is in a position to say no to Miyamoto, new F-Zero doesn't happen.

Now, why a GX remake doesn't happen, I'm not sure. Surely re-releasing perfection wouldn't be as much of a problem as trying to create a sequel to it would be.

And, broadly speaking, life in prison should be reserved for people who represent a permanent threat to society, which is a pretty f***ing small list. Somebody who just does a horrible thing should get a reasonable set number of years.

There is indeed an argument to be made for lighter, rehabilitation-focused prison sentences, rather than the "tough on crime" attitude many Americans are so fond of, but using pardons to effect such a paradigm shift definitely is not the way to go about it, nor is there any reason at all to suspect that's what's going on here (and not just because most of the people listed were not serving life sentences). I know you love to play devil's advocate and all, but the guy literally pardoned somebody who raped a 9-year-old. You don't want to try defending that.

In some ways. Infrastructure requirements differ pretty considerably. The biggest difference is the sorts of industries that dominate the areas, so if you start getting into federal subsidies, there'll be some differences of opinions. In the grand scheme of things, though, the basic needs aren't really that different and most of the political divide between urban and rural stems from being culturally conservative/liberal.

The Nethertoxin change is quite a bit older than 7.23, actually. It was 7.07 (two years ago) that changed it from the old passive to a targeted AoE (which applied break and reduced magic resist). 7.07 also changed Poison Attack from a flat DoT to one based on missing health, which kind of took over Nethertoxin's old functionality (though it no longer helped with last hitting). 7.23 tweaked both abilities to have Poison Attack stack flat damage and reduce magic resist, while removing the magic resist debuff from Nethertoxin and giving it accelerating damage. I haven't tried the new Viper, but it seems like they're trying to design him around the idea of getting stronger the longer a fight goes on (which old Nethertoxin did) without encouraging him to just pick off survivors after a fight instead of actively participating.

The reason you'd back up to Viper is for his ability to extremely punish weakened targets and punishing chasers. Thanks to toxins you don't have to worry about last hit timing as much, but rather positioning.

They changed Viper, none of his abilities provide bonuses based on missing health anymore. His Poison Attack is now a stacking DoT/Slow/magic resistance debuff and the new Nethertoxin is an AoE DoT with a built-in break and damage that ramps up as targets stand in it.

Rural areas should not have anywhere close to the same representation, because there are fewer people there.

in democracy people are what matter, not areas of land

Which has the potential to create a country where non-urban living sucks because those living outside of urban areas effectively have no political voice. Yeah, it means individuals' interests aren't necessarily represented democratically, but it allows groups' interests to be, which is arguably a more effective way to run a country. In theory, at least. Again, the actual execution leaves a lot to be desired, particularly where the whole distinction between federal, state, and municipal jurisdictions should already allow for different regions to be governed differently if that's what will work better for them.

Me and my coworker already went there. I told him that the electoral college is a dumb relic that needs to be no more. And he said there was a very important reason for it, and then neglected to inform me of that reason. Instead he went somewhere else.

Thats another pattern Ive noticed about these folks. They can never stay on one topic. They immediately jump to others. They just recite GOP talking points without knowing what they actually mean.

The best justification that I've heard is that it mitigates the ability for urban areas (which have higher population densities) to overpower rural areas, since people's priorities tend to differ based on what sort of work they do (which, in turn, tends to differ by area). Rather than risking having a bunch of unhappy farmers whose voice is never heard over that of the IT folks that crowd into cities, the farmers get more weight to their votes to attempt to balance it out.

Now, is that accomplished by the current state of the electoral college? Couldn't tell you. Probably not, given the tendency toward gerrymandering and football politics over addressing real issues. But that's the theory, and I don't think that theory is entirely without merit.

TDS hard at work.

Most people have agreed that beating the kid up was wrong. The position is more along the lines of "this is to be expected if he was as racist as his mother sounds," not "I'm glad he got beaten up." That said, it's a lot harder to be sympathetic toward somebody who got hurt after antagonizing people to the point of inciting violence than it is to be sympathetic to a more innocent victim.

Although, given the age, I am actually pretty sympathetic to the kid, regardless of the circumstances. If he was being a racist prick to such an extent as to elicit a beating, that's coming pretty much entirely from his upbringing. He hasn't been around long enough to learn to be racist on his own, meaning he's a victim of both this beating and some garbage parenting. That's just sad.
