waiters don't deserve tips. the chef is the one who did all the work. hell i would go to the kitchen and pick up my own plate if they would let me. and shake the chef's hand. waiters think they should steal money from the chef and pretend like their job is hard. I say no. the only tips I would be ok with are tips to the chef.

Most waiters are good looking entitled people who are only smart at socializing which is why they can only get appearance jobs until they are lucky enough to graduate to higher appearance jobs or wear out their looks/age and try to marry themselves off or fall into self destructive patterns.

Not all waiters mind you, just the attractive ones who work at sports bars and casual dining restaurants. Those are the ones that make all the tip money anyway because they made some old person feel good that a young person watching the same sports team they do (pro tip, they usually dont, and most things the tip earneds say to customers is fake)

Now is waiters we t back to what they USED to be, that would be a different story, but in modern casual dining the people in the kitchen making the food and cleaning up after dishes should ALWAYS earn more at the end of the day than the person with easiest job who is lucky modern society is so obsessed with pretty faces and feeling good about yourself.

I cant wait to have touchpads replace them.

Its always the waiters who get upity and demand more cash.

The poor dishwasher doesnt usually speak enough englich to realize they were hired because they wouldnt know they were being taken advantage of!

At the end of the day corporatism is to blame for death of casual dining, and I saw an article with the nerve to blame this generation as being too poor to go to your local chilis for overpriced dried out ribs only to have some stupid ego fluffed beg me to pad his paycheck greater that the poor sap who has to microwave me food to oder while being yelled at be people the whole time.

I have never made more than minimum wage. I don't feel sorry for them. and the part about making less than minimum, that only happens because people tip. if people stopped tipping, they would be paid minimum wage. plus they still demand tips even when they DO get minimum wage. in WA they are legally required to be paid minimum wage and it's like the highest minimum wage in the country. but if you don't tip they scream

LIES!

In modern age its illegal to pay under minimum.

What this means is that at the end of a pay cycle if the minimum wage wasnt acchieved through tips and salary, your boss makes up the difference.

Tipping is part of your salary of having a piss easy job that the owner shouldnt have to pay you as much, with the possibility of making above minimum wage simply because you smile at somebody while brining them their plate.

People at baskin robbins do more work as they directly serve you AND take the order. Concession stand workers have harder jobs too, but you dont see and compaines for them to get tipped.

Eh, not really. It's important to have a barrier between kitchen staff and customers so that kitchen staff can do their jobs with minimal interruption (and anyone who's ever worked in customer service can tell you that they would be interrupted by the sort of person who doesn't understand that "the customer is always right" is actually insulting them). It's also significantly more efficient to only have a few people going up to the counter to place orders than to have every single person at every single table doing so, since that allows some degree of coordination that customers won't have.

A chef in Philly can make $20/hour, usually more.

Most line/prep cooks make $10-12/hour, more if you're exceptional.

A server, waiter, bartender or busperson only makes $2.85/hour.

So in an 8 hour shift, the chef and cooks make their wage regardless of the number of customers.

In the same 8 hours, the front house staff only makes decent money when plenty of customers come in and tip. They usually pool tips as well or tip out to the busperson.

The American federal government requires a wage of at least $2.13 per hour be paid to employees that receive at least $30 per month in tips. If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.

in other words, servers make at least minimum wage, which is a pretty important factor he left out.

im not saying tip the kitchen staff, and im not saying dont tip the wait staff.

i am saying that sunny is not an authority figure on anything, including this.

Except that never f***ing happens in the restaurant world. You can make all the laws you want about it, but unless servers actually start using legal authority to get an extra $10 or whatever. Then suddenly "oh look, you have a few less shifts this week, it happens", and then more and more shifts gets dropped until you just have one because you're that asshole who sued over $10 that you were owed.

Ask a server about it, I bet you they have never been paid the difference.

also, i know plenty but never met one who's mentioned coming in below minimum wage before because they work at actual restaurants and not dive bars.

Most front house staff don't have any issues with tips or wage, even those that work at dive bars.

In all honesty, the only people that complain about tips are shitty customers. But for every shitty tipper, there's the awesome over tipper.

This sounds like my hardcore Chad buddy. He's a bartender who women throw themselves at, but the girl he wanted to settle down with had no feelings for him. He also seemingly is pretty into drugs the past few years (mostly pot, but he strikes me as a slippery slope guy - he also had to deal with some legit hardship as a kid, which may have left long-term problems). I haven't talked to him in about 3 months now... I hope he's alive (not a joke), but have no way to contact him as he closed like all his accounts and our mutual friends cut him off ages ago (and we live far apart geographically now).

The place I work is currently out of season.

Daytime staff has one front house staff and one cook.

The woman out front is an amazing host and earns great tips. The day cook is the manager and works like a demon. Also finds time to make the homemade dishes for the evening.

Night staff is me, responsible for serving all drinks and food and cashing up and cleaning at the end of the night.

And the night cook, who thinks he's a chef and is lazy as fuck. Considers himself above the day cook because he has chef qualifications.

We all get paid exactly the same and share tips evenly.

Try waiting tables for literally one day. Do it. Oh, and don't expect tips. Because according to you, you don't deserve them. So spend all day, dealing with dumbass customers, carrying trays, on your feet, managing multiple tables at once, getting burnt and covered in dressings, then after you've done that, spend an hour or two sweeping tables, rolling silverware, stocking condiments, etc. And then get paid your 2.13 an hour, all of which is taxed, and take home your $0.00 paycheck.

Honestly, what an ignorant statement. It's insulting how ignorant your comments are, and I haven't waited a table in a half decade.

If waiters started making reg minimum wage or even a couple dollars more and no tips like the rest of the restaurant so many tantrums would be thrown.

So many tantrums already get thrown for not tipping a 20 for the half hour they've been topping of diet cokes a few times and trash talking customers behind their backs the rest of it. Lol.
