I once knew someone who said they were a demisexual lesbian.

Even if you believe in fluid gender identity (and you probably should by now), there isn't really 50, 70, or 100 individual ones. Just people that are bad at information architecture.

People have characteristics related to their identity. Their physical sex, their sexual preference, their behavior... Each of these have only a few possibilities, even if you add edge cases and ambiguous ones. The combinations of those makes you who you are as far as gender identity goes.

Eg: Someone who is born with male parts, who is attracted to females and behaves like society's stereotype of a male. 3 separate, independent pieces. They would be 3 different questions on a form with a few options each if you wanted to drill into someone's identity.

But no. People want a SINGLE flag that defines everything. So they took every combination of those properties and gave an individual name to every single one of them.

All that did is make things way more complicated than it needed to be, and is slowing down society's progress when it comes to accepting all the different kind of people. A surgeon, a psychologist and a stylist require a very different piece of information when they ask you what you are. Using the same word/expression to answer all those questions at once is just forcing people to google wtf your answer meant.

tbh the facebook thing was just meant to have a list that covered any minutiae in lieu of having an empty field to enter whatever you want. there's a ton of overlap on that list as well as things that aren't actually 'genders' in themselves, just modifiers

i don't know if that's the best way to do that, but that's what it is. and that's usually what people are talking about when they cite a number in the 50-70 range

That's the general impression I have. They're all minor variants on the same handful of core concepts, such that giving all of them specific labels is just unnecessary. Even more so where many of those labels aren't particularly self-evident, so you end up describing what you mean in terms of broader concepts anyway.
