I took MAT135 (intro to statistics) online, had to go to the campus to take the tests.

I enjoyed it but ultimately it boiled down to being a big tutorial on how to use StatCrunch, which I didn't mind but I don't know if I really learned much stats.
I'm hoping my Stats class could be more applicable outside of just learning the software. I was thinking of recording videos working out problems so students can follow along. Another idea is using current events news stories that use polls and other statistics and teach them how to evaluate them for bias and soundness of poll design.

Once when I was nine. Visiting my friend's house next door and her mom told me she was in her room and I could just head there like I always do. Her mom didn't realize she just showered and was brushing her hair in her room naked.

Another time sort of. I was an RA at a dorm doing room checks during spring break (when supposedly everyone was gone for break). I heard a TV on so I knocked a few times but didn't hear anyone reply so I walked in announcing myself. I figured someone just left their TV on when they left for the break. I went in the room and performed the check. I then heard the toilet flush from the bathroom and the bathroom door quickly opened. A cross country girl walked out in her underwear wearing headphones (which is why she didn't hear me knocking). Super awkward. I just slowly raised the clipboard I was holding over my face and backed out of the room, lol.

Yes, this can happen to me sometimes. It's a symptom of a horrible work culture. We spend so much of our lives doing meaningless work for others that once we get a little bit of free time, we just want to do nothing.

My fix for this is to force myself to do something tangible. What I mean by that is to do something that results in a tangible product at the end to make me feel like I did someting valuable and make me proud.

For example, if I spend a weekend watching movies, napping, or playing video games, I feel like I wasted a whole weekend. Sure, I enjoyed myself during, but afterwards, regret sets in.

However, I have taken up hobbies such as writing. I started a blog that gained some followers. I self published a novel that gained a small readership. I went back to school and got a Master's degree. These are all things that make me feel good when I see the finished product and motivates me to do more.

My wife paints. She makes paintings amd sells them at flea markets and garage sales, or gives them as gifts. She also has learned to refurbish old furniture to decorate our house.

What can you do that gives you a similar sense if accomplishment? Maybe learn to code and create a simple video game. Write and publish reviews of a product you regularly consume. Build something. Anything you can look at with a sense of pride.

Just my two cents.

It's a ritual. People love their rituals and have loved them throughout history.

For the same reason we celebrate sweet 16s, baby showers, marriage, retirement parties, and birthdays in general.

If you really want to question a celebration, why do we celebrate an anniversary of your birth? Is living a year really an accomplishment? How about a 21st birthday celebration? Celebrating being able to drink when you have likely already been doing it for years.

From an anthropologic standpoint, celebrations are a way we connect with other humans. These are shared experiences that remind us we are not so different from each other. It's less about what you are celebrating and more about the people there to experience it with.

I went to one for my bachelor party. We went on a weeknight early and it was mostly empty so the strippers were down to just chill with you. We got a dance from a young Polish (or was she Dutch) chick who went to the local college. After her (pretty good) pole dance, she just hung out with us and played pool with us topless. We didn't spend all that much and just hung out and chatted for a while. We left once it started getting busier.

I couldn't imagine enjoying myself if the place were fuller, though. But that particular experience was great.

I'm teaching a statistics class this spring and I want to pepper in humorous or interesting clips of statistics or data analysis used in TV shows or movies. Anyone have any recommendations for shows or movies I could check out? Recommendations for specific scenes would be best, but even just general show/movie recommendations could put me in the right direction. Anything that involves probability, sampling, polling, distributions, results reporting, quantitative analysis, charts/graphs, etc. Though nothing like the "GUI interface using Visual Basic" crap from CSI. I don't want to confuse the students further.

I know I've seen tons of shows with scenes like these but now that I actually need to use them I'm drawing a blank. So far the only thing I have found is the Halloween in January scene from Bojack Horseman:

It's not really about that. It's about how the show tends to treat the viewers as if they're too stupid to understand what's going on, and doing constantly. It's so heavy handed about having to explain every action he takes, but does so in such a boring and patronizing manner. It just irks me, and it turned out my complaints were accurate anyway.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad others can enjoy it. My brother loved it and always wanted me to watch with him, but I just couldn't get into it because of how it talked down and over explained to the viewers.

Honestly that is what I liked so mich about the show. It gave it a certain style. It was like Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide for adults.

The show felt like I was watching a spy training video with a plot. It was a fascinating niche but I can see how it isn't for some people. Another work of fiction I would compare its storytelling style to is World War Z (the book, not the movie).

Its a decent story by Sonic standards

This. The plot was over-the-top but it was great at letting the Sonic characters interact and showcase their individual personalities. Sonic's rivalry with Eggman, Sonic's constant bickering with Knuckles, Knuckles' flirting with Rogue, Eggman trying to outdo Tails, and Shadow's edginess interactions with everyone were good fun.

Even Amy's annoying presence had its place in the story. Sure it won't win any writing awards and the dialogue is cringy more often than not but it works for the kind of game Sonic is. Personally, the "darker" games after that just felt too tryhard. This had a good balance of serious and humor.

Also, regarding mixing up Sonic and Shadow. As far as the world knows, there is only one talking hedgehog. Most people have probably not even met him or seen him before. Not crazy to believe that fast hedgehog breaking into bases isn't the fast hedgehog you've heard stories about.

Not like Sonic has a social security number.

I will say I appreciate the little trick they did with the Buzz reaching out his hand.

anyone old enough for Toy Story nostalgia is probably familiar enough with story telling tropes to see that as a call back to the beginning of the film, where Buzz offered to shake Woodys hand, only for Woody to defiantly fix his hat and storm off.

So you see Buzz reaching out to Woody in the furnace and youre like oh yeah, Woodys about to save the day somehow! Only for him to grab the hand and accept death. >_>

damn dude, u made it that much more sad

Well yeah, that's what I found so emotional about the scene.

It's pretty obvious they would have survived, but what really stole the scene was that look of defeat. Throughout 3 movies, no matter what the obstacle, they would always pull through using their dedication. If one if them lost hope, the other would always be there to pick them up and encourage them to keep fighting.

This was the first time in the series where they both accepted their fate and used it as an opportunity to at least go down together.

It was a powerful scene because it was not cheap. It wasn't your typical "character may die" scene, as I felt they earned it. The whole movie was about their value as toys and how they felt they were losing their value as their kid grew up and they were abused by preschoolers.

Ending up in an incinerator showcased both literally and metaphorically that they were basically trash at that point and this scene showed them realizing it.

If you care that much about it, then dress business casual and pretend you are on a business trip. Even though I'm married, I travel a lot so I'll end up eating out by myself if I didn't travel with any colleagues. It's usually after a conference or business meeting so I'm either in a full suit or some business casual attire. I usually strike up a conversation and I tell them I'm travelling and if there are any local places to recommend I visit while I'm in town. Usually they'll love talking about where they live with a traveler and overall it's a good time.

Now, that's assuming you are willing to pretend to be traveling for a meal. If not, just go during the lunch rush. Most people who work will grab a quick bite to eat at a restaurant by themselves during the lunch hour so no one bats an eye. Moreso at places like Panera or Chiptotle but I'll occasionally see them at sit-down places too.

I am ehh on the dynamaxing.

It's neat for the gym battles cause it gives them a cinematic, larger-then-life feel to them, but from a gameplay perspective, it gets boring.

Basically you have an extremely limited movepool with no subtlety between them. Raid battles have gotten boring if you are the dynamax pokemon. What's the point of tailoring each of my pokemon's movesets if when dynamaxed they become generic type attacks?

So conceptually I like it but functionally I could do without.

The story that was told was fresh and new but still kept the heart of what makes Pokemon, well, Pokemon.

Overall a decent movie. I think it laid the groundwork for future movies with this structure.

You know, I have always been curious how scenes like that are filmed. Like you have this woman standing topless in front of a kid in a film set. I can imagine the kind of coaching involved a) for the kid to keep a straight face through all the takes b) for the woman to keep the movie pg and c) for the kid's parents who are likely on set watching it happen.

It's one thing to have nudity in movies during sex scenes and scenes with adults, but it must be a whole different ball game when there are children involved. Even if the audience doesn't see the nudity since it is censored, there is still nudity on set that must be handled tactfully.
