Peer review doesn't do too much good. Certainly makes the process of science slower, and translates often a subjective element into one that feels more objective (published, or not).
What do you propose as an alternative?

While I share your skepticism of the peer review process, in my experience publishing, if the peers don't agree with the conclusion, the manuscript doesn't even make it to preprint. Why would an editor spend time trying to improve someone's weak study when they could just reject it and accept a better one right off the bat?

I actually just had a manuscript accepted today and will go to preprint next week. I anticipate that the edits will be minimal, because during the peer review process, the reviewers threw it back to me and told me to improve my discussion of my analysis and results.

To be clear, they found my conclusions valid, which is the only reason they didn't outright reject it. But they said my wording was unclear and meandered. So I fixed it and resubmitted. Now, as a preprint, we'll mostly be doing copyediting and such.

From what I can see, by the time a paper gets to the preprint stage, it shouldn't have that much more to correct. At least in my field.

Wow they get paid so little. I make more than them.
The problem is most people assume that meteorologists are the guy you see on Channel 9 with your local forecast. TV weathermen are a very small percentage of meteorologists.

Most meteorologists sit in a cubicle in national weather centers (or air traffic control towers or space centers) and analyze satellite data using predictive models and such. Interestingly enough, only around half of them provide general weather forecasts for the general population.

The other half are contracted by companies to provide forecasts specifically for their business operations. Think airlines, NASA, trucking companies, agriculture industry, pipeline industry, firefighters, basically any industry that can lose money due to bad weather. You can make much more money as a private contractor, but you are also held to a much higher standard on your predictions and results since you could be costing people money.

Incorrect.

A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-dayor longerforecast is only right about half the time.

If you base your knowledge on some random weather guy in a local news channel's accuracy, then you aren't looking at the bigger picture. Once you take into account the National Weather Service's daily weather forecasts using sophisticated prediction models, things looks a lot better.

If what you said was true, flight travel would be impossible, as no one would be able to predict the correct weather forecasts to make flying safe.

Zanzenburger

Grass types, like bug, tend to be early-game types. They follow a similar format to gane levels, where the earlier levels are in fields or grass themes, while later levels take place in ice lands, fire lands, or places of darkness.

It's for the same reason that you tend to find Ice, Dark, Dragon, and to a lesser extent fire types later in the game, as they are considered more late-game types.

So early game types typically have more common weaknesses.

Recent games like Sword-Shield have moved away from this somewhat, but the earlier games followed this formula.

there is a link in the email. i hovered over the link (without clicking it), and it appears to be a google docs form. strange.

i'm definitely not gonna click the link or respond to this email. but it might be worth looking into job offers at school. right now i work a full time job (40 hours a week), and it's a decent job but i wish i could go to school full time. right now i can't because i work too many hours at work.
If you qualify for federal work study (which you would need to fill out your FAFSA to find out), there are usually a bunch of great job opportunities on campus. They are all part time, and never more than 20 hours a week, but the pay is usually decent and the hours are very flexible with your classes. With Covid, I've seen more colleges allow these jobs to also be worked remote and there's usually positions in every department.

If you don't qualify for work study, you still have access to many on-campus jobs, which again, are very flexible and work around your class schedule. I worked on-campus as a student as well as off-campus and the on-campus job was better by far. Pay was essentially the same per hour but on-campus was less stressful and allowed me to work on homework during slow periods.

Did that actually come from your college's .edu address? That sounds particularly scammy to me.

It's not unheard of to have the occasional high-paying job when the college gets a one-time grant for a special project or something, but that's more the exception and not the rule.

Look at the contact information. Does it link back to the university website, or have some obscure link or email that does not end in the .edu address.

You could also just contact your advisor at the college and ask them if this seems legit to them.

EDIT: The fact that they include both staff and students in that email is particularly troublesome. College job opportunities are typically tailored to either students or staff, not both. And even if it's available to both, they typically have different list-serves for each group and send out those emails separately (I work at a university so I'm familiar with how notices are sent out). That alone makes me think you shouldn't trust it.

The problem is caseloads.

In many colleges, each advisor gets anywhere between 1k and 2k students that they are responsible for each year. They'll schedule 10 minute blocks to meet with students, and they fill up all day, every day with very little breaks. As a result, they answer emails and listen to voicemails either between student meetings (i.e. 1-2 minutes), or staying late into the evening working. Lots of voicemails and emails get missed.

I'm not taking away blame from the individual advisors, but this is a structural problem with colleges underfunded and not being able to pay for the amount of advisors needed.

Meanwhile, faculty complain about administrative bloat when more funding gets put into these positions, but then also complain when they get assigned students to advise because there aren't enough advisors.

It's stupid, but there's a reason that characters are written that way. Audiences are predisposed to assume a character is White unless otherwise stated. At the same time, it's considered impolite to volunteer information regarding character race unless it's relevant to the story.

This presents a problem because there's really no winning option:

* Option 1) you're racist / potentially racist if you say that Dave is Black because his race is not relevant to the story
* Option 2) you're racist / potentially racist for mentioning Dave's lips, nose, and hair because you're calling attention to and exploiting his natural features
* Option 3) you're racist / potentially racist because your story lacked diversity. you told us in the movie adaptation's press release that Dave "was always Black" but it feels like something made up after-the-fact because you never told us until now
It's a blind spot which comes from incompatible standards of what can or should be done.
This is true. I've had this issue in every novel I've written.

You either describe the minority character's details to accentuate their race/ethnicity, give them a stereotypical name to let the readers assume their race/ethnicity, or not mention it at all and just let readers make whatever assumptions they want.

I've found one working strategy to be to just describe them regardless of their race, meaning describing the "White" features of the White characters just as in the minority characters (obviously not in the exaggerated way of the OP). Then everyone gets treated the same.

Incoming every man baby that wants to cry about their student loans like they're the only people who are struggling with debt

Zanzenburger posted...
You know what's the difference between student loans and a mortgage (or any other debt)?

You can discharge a mortgage in a bankruptcy. You can get rid of car loans, credit card debt, medical debt, and wage garnishing judgments by filing bankruptcy. That's because bankruptcy (both Ch. 7 and Ch. 13) were created to protect consumers that got in way over their heads and need a fresh start.

Guess what isn't discharged in a bankruptcy? Student loan debt.

So not only is taking in a student loan infinitely easier than getting a mortgage or a car loan (seriously, I work with high school and college students and they can get a $40k student loan with no credit but struggle to get a $10k car loan), but it's virtually impossible to get it discharged in any way, shape, or form.

Add to that the fact that student loan interests are, on average, higher than car loan interests and much higher than mortgage interest, causing compounding interest that builds up much faster than you can pay off.

Add to that the fact that at least a mortgage gets you a house that appreciates in value, and a car loan at least gets you a physical car you can use day-to-day. Student loan debt only gets you a piece of paper, if you finish, that says you can maybe get a job one day. There is no collateral tied to that loan. It's essentially unsecured like credit card debt but not dischargeable like credit card debt.

Add to that the fact that these loans are primarily directed at 16-18 year olds, many first-generation students who receive no financial advice from their parents (because they never had to get student loan debt), and do not get financial advice from their schools (because it's more important they learn trigonometry and calculus than the basics of budgeting and finance), while being told that they have to go to college.

Student loan debt is a MASSIVE issue for all the reasons stated above. People who compare student loan debt to other debts are either not aware of these differences or are being disingenuous. Someone can easily say "well I have to pay my mortgage" without acknowledging the fact that they do have a lifeline through bankruptcy if they one day couldn't pay it, as millions of Americans (as well as millionaire and billionaire entrepreneurs) have done. If student loan debt were dischargeable with bankruptcy, you can bet that we wouldn't have the same number of problems we have now.
