Great episode.

I was just thinking how this episode breaks down that narrative that every episode shows guys being evil. By contrast, this showed a group of guys actually helping Jen out in a time of vulnerability. I kept expecting a swerve where one of them was evil or a jerk but it was all genuine. They were genuinely good people and after the episode I couldn't stop smiling.

They really could have done without the "three days earlier" bit though. Kinda ruined the vibe of the rest of the episode. It reminded me of that Buffy episode where her mom died. The whole episode felt so real and grounded until they tacked on the monster at the end. . It wasnt necessary and actually ruined the impact of the rest of the ep.

I think it was fine. They still made their point about terrible kids being terrible.

The movie also seemed to make Pinnochio less of a jerk than in the animated film. Whereas the cartoon version would blatantly disobey Jiminy and get himself into trouble, this version actually did listen to Jiminy's advice more often than not. Instead, the film found ways to separate the two so Pinnochio was left without a conscience at all. So the pleasure island scene was more about dealing with peer pressure than it was about Pinnochio just wanting to do whatever he wanted. So the beer and smoking scene wouldn't have fit in this movie because Pinnochio's motivation for going there was different. He didnt actually want to engage in the tomfoolery. He was kinda forced into it.

I have no idea if this is an unpopular opinion or not. But I find the sequel overall better than the original. The hijinks are dialed up and most of the characters have more interesting and hilarious storylines. The addition of Carol's ex-husband brought a plot device that was rarely touched upon in the series: that the Brady's had lives before getting together. Plus, his snarky, sarcastic attitude paired really well with the naivete of the entire family.

Carol and Jan were hilarious for different reasons, with Carol being so optimistically airheaded and Jan with her constantly failed attempts at besting Marsha with George Glass. Mike was great with his cheesy speeches the whole movie and that entire shtick had an awesome payoff at the end. Greg and Marsha's pseudo-incest plotline was both weird and hilarious at the same time. That was a bold and daring move by the writers but I think it was executed well.

And the humor used in the scenes in the airplane and Hawaii gave off "Airplane-esque" movie vibes. I'm curious if there are strong opinions for one movie versus the other.

We had Hello Fresh for a few months and it was delicious. The food is definitely great, but Injust hate how long it takes to prepare. They underestimate the prep time advertise. Like it might say it can be prepared in 30 minutes but takes closer to an hour if you are not a master cook. It wasn't convenient for our lifestyle.

We switched to Fresh N Lean, which sends the meals already ore-made. You just pop them in a microwave and eat. Similar price and much more convenient, but the taste drops in quality. Which makes sense. I just put some seasoning on it and it works for me. I love that the meals are portioned to help with calorie control and maximize protein.

What you will like depends on how much time you have to prepare the meals. I think they are worth the price for people with busy lifestyles, always on the go, but still want to eat balanced meals and not just trash foods like fast food.

EDIT: Though I just discovered a mom and pop food prep company near where I live. I did my first order with them for next week. If the quality is comparable, I might switch to them, even if they are a bit pricier, just to support the small businesses.

It's great on rewatches too.

The joke density is absurdly high. You can tell how much work went into the writing. There's jokes and then jokes within jokes and then a surface level joke sprinkled on top that ties it all together. It's beautifully crafted
I think that's the best description of the show's brilliance I have ever read.

The joke density truly is impressive. Even shows like The Office and Parks and Rec have their calm moments between their jokes and quips to set the next one up, but 30 Rock fires on all cylinders the whole time. taking no breaks. It's one punchline after the other, but as you said, crafting it in such a way that it advances the plot and keeps the jokes from getting stale. That show has to have phenomenal writers to pull something like that off.

From what I've noticed, shows that have the protagonist complete some kind of checklist of tasks generally ends before the protagonist could complete it.

For example, in My Name Is Earl, the lead character Earl creates a list to right many wrongs he made before he went to prison. The show, unfortunately, ended without any kind of satisfying conclusion of him finally finishing the list. (The off-screen handwave in Raising Hope doesn't count)

Another show, 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, has the protagonist turned into a dog and forced to complete 100 good deeds before he could be turned back human. The show got cancelled before he could finish so he supposedly ended up as a dog forever.

And the gang in 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo never actually managed to catch the 13 ghosts after releasing them in the pilot. (Though apparently they made a movie in 2019 that brings in Fred and Velma and serves as the finale for this series, but the point still stands for the original series)

From what I gather, making checklist shows is risky due to the creators never knowing if and when they'll be cancelled. Are there shows of this genre that had a successful and satisfying conclusion?

Most people today dont realize that teaching kids requires a hell of a lot of psychology, counseling, mediation skills, learning theory, crisis response, risk assessment, data reporting, and project management; all in addition to knowing the material being taught.

Kids are coming to school with a host of mental health issues that range from learning disabilities to actual threat of school violence. And you can't just put your hands on a kid when they choose to attack you or run away from the classroom. Hold them the wrong way and you will get sued to kingdom come. Most teacher training nowadays is not even learning the educational material, but how to effectively manage a classroom full of kids with a host of problems that they bring from home. Add to that the pressures of state testing scores tied to funding, the removal of recess and naps, and the cutting of arts and music programs, and being a teacher is hell these days.

Hardly anyone can walk off the street and handle a classroom for a full year without that preparation.

The only issue with backing in is if there are a lot of cars on the parking lot and you cause a traffic jam by backing in.

I've seen situations where a car drives past a parking spot (in a full parking lot) with a car behind them. The car behind them sees them drive past and assumes they just skipped that parking spot. But instead, the car in front keeps going, then stops, then reverses to back in. But by that point the car behind pulled forward to take the spot as well. Now both cars are fighting for the same spot.

the c-suite or jobs higher up the ladder are not for everyone. unless you're in a complete joke of a company, they're actually very hard jobs and the stress is not really worth the money. unless you really really like managing large teams and having to understand products and designs in and out and be good with potential customers and potential investors, and having to always be perfect in your recall of all company information...you're probably not going to like c-suite or higher-up manager type of jobs. those people are usually gonna have to be passionate about the business they're in in order to put up with that effort.

they get paid a lot but it's not for no reason, usually. many of those people are experts in their fields, even if some of their more recent hands-on exp is lacking, they still have a long tenure in whatever field/business they're in.
This is actually very accurate. The problem is that there is a mismatch in the skill required to do these top-level jobs and the people that are eventually hired to do them.

Generally speaking, the ones that do it well you won't hear about, because they are too busy taking care of their companies and producing results while staying scandal-free. The ones you hear about are the bad ones, because they often make news headlines for their incompetence. It's hard to say if there's more competent ones or incompetent ones out there without doing a statistical study of it. Mere hearsay and anecdotes will always make it seems like the incompetent ones are more numerous.

I do want to add another point to this conversation of how the incompetent ones get promoted. I've been in hiring committees where we hire Vice Presidents and the advantage of applying for jobs that high up is that you can claim the credit of every department below you as your doing. I had VP candidates tell us about these breakthrough products or processes developed by their departments that impressed the rest of the hiring committee. In one particular example, I happened to know in detail about that particular product, so I questioned them with finer details about it (things that someone who really had a hand in its success would know). They stumbled through their answer, showing me they really had no idea what the product was and that they just had a really competent team and he had nothing to do with their success.

But to people who don't bother to ask for follow-ups, candidates like that can build an impressive resume of product launches, initiatives, fundraising campaigns, and partnerships created by their strong teams, even if the teams completed these tasks in spite of them and not because of them.

Meanwhile an individual contributor at a company can be the key person to launch a successful venture, but they don't get any credit for it because they only worked on a piece of it, and the boss gets the full credit.

The game is overall a faithful remake of Pokemon Yellow, with Kanto redesigned in a beautiful 3D environment. The two biggest complaints that often surround the game are the catching mechanic (it uses the Pokemon Go mechanic that many people don't like) and the fact that your starter Pikachu/Eevee is OP, making an easy game easier. Personally, I don't think either of these are enough to detract from the positive qualities of the game (and honestly, I grew to like the catching mechanic; was a nice change of pace from the same old).

Here are some positives of the game, since people tend to only focus on the negatives:
  • You are basically playing through the original game in 3D. Narratively and visually, it is a faithful adaptation of the original games
  • Pokemon roam outside in the overworld, making Kanto feel much more alive and active. You can also choose whether you want to encounter the pokemon or avoid it entirely. I never realized how much better Pokemon is without random encounters.
  • The Pokemon in your party can follow you. Another delightful mechanic where you can have your favorite pokemon follow you around, each with their own unique animation that adds their individual personalities. It's so satisfying to see a Sandslash rolling around behind you like Sonic or Metapod bouncing or Jigglypuff floating like a balloon. Some pokemon you can even ride on for flying, riding, and surfing like Charizard, Rapidash, and Gyarados.
  • Shinies are easier to find, chain, and catch. You can tell they are shiny from the overworld, making it so much easier to find them without having to join endless battles. They also appear more often under certain conditions.
  • Type additions- You get to play the original games but with Dark, Steel, and Fairy types added. So basically modernized some but still enjoyable to play
  • You get exp for catching pokemon. This was a much-needed change. It sucked that defeating pokemon or trainers was the only way to level up. This actually encouraged you to catch more pokemon as a way to level up.
  • There's coop in this game, so far the only released mainline game or remake to have it. It isn't much, and I doubt most people used it, but I did and it was fun. A second player can explore the overworld with you and join you in the battles. The only downside is it makes battles too easy because they become 2 vs 1 in stead of 1 vs 1. But still a fun social experience.

Reasons people could major in Philosophy that's not directly to find a job:
  • already has a job and/or financially independent, doing it for self-fulfillment
  • second/double major, often supplements a first major like pre-law or psychology
  • interested in engaging in philosophy-related research to advance our collective knowledge
  • meeting the undergrad requirement for a master's or doctorate program that accepts any completed undergrad major (and happens to love philosophy so it's a win/win)
  • used as professional development to enhance critical thinking skills, analytical skills, research skills, and argumentative skills (due to the way the subject is taught)
