If we are talking popularity, then Blue Eyes White Dragon is the closest equivalent to the Charizard card. They both have badass designs and were hyped to hell and back in the anime. They are also both just okay competitively despite the hype.

The Egyptian gods are more comparable to the ancient Mew card. Both had promotional cards tied to a special arc of the anime featuring a mystical creature/creatures and you were the coolest kid in school if you managed to get one.

I do think technology use is keeping people's brains active longer.

I've always held the (untested) belief that once people hit retirement and stop using their brain actively, that it starts shutting down. Keeping your brain active should keep it going strong well into your senior year.

When it comes to emotional presence and atmosphere, I think Puss in Boots 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and the first 2 HTTYD movies rival Prince of Egypt. But they are all extremely good.

Thank you for that answer, Zanzenburger. I thought I recalled the prices of Uber being lower than taxis when that service first came about. Did Lyft come about to give some competition to Uber or what? Not sure why more freelancers couldn't get a job from Uber.
My dad has worked for both and they function slightly differently. According to him, Uber has more business but pays you less per pickup. Lift has better rates for drivers but doesn't have as many available rides (though this may be different in different parts of the country).

Other differences include how the app handles the rides. I don't know personally how it works, but apparently one is more user friendly than the other, letting you see the trip details before you accept the ride. They also differ in how many rides you can decline before it dings your driver score and other such things.

TopicHow is Uber/Lyft different from a taxi?
Zanzenburger

Taxi companies hire drivers to maintain a fleet and guarantee coverage for all hours of the day, so they schedule employees to work specific hours to maintain that coverage. Calls are done centrally through the company and the company dispatches the taxi to the closest location. Taxis can also pick up people from the street. Lastly, taxis are marked as such so they are easy to identify. Taxi drivers are by nature employees of the company and this is typically their primary job.

Lift/Uber drivers are not employees of the company, but freelancers who can choose to take a job from the "dispatcher" (which is basically the app). There are no specific shifts they have to work and the car does not have to identify as a Lift/Uber car (though it does have to meet safety requirements). While some people work it as their primary job, most people do this for side income and can start and stop whenever they want.

Taxi companies have more overhead costs so they are often more expensive than Uber/Lift. But they can provide a guarantee that you'll get a taxi in x amount of time, whereas Lift/Uber is based on driver availability.

They're great if the women are talented dancers. There's something exhilarating about the performance of a talented pole dancer that strips during the routine. I do want to mention this as a plus for a four year institution. If your intention is to get involved in college and one day be student government president or other leadership position, then having the relationships built over 4 years gives you an advantage.

If you don't care about that, then it's a moot point.

There aren't. Outside of the stigma community colleges can have, you can get a quality degree at a community college with courses that rival the four year institutions in rigor (source: I work at a community college).

A good student will be a good student at any school they attend, same with a bad student. Get your associates, transfer to a 4-year institution, and get a bachelor's at less than half the cost.

TopicBecoming a hiring manager confirmed my suspicions about resumes
Zanzenburger
10/11/23 5:19:25 PM
#38
I've hired about 15 new positions in the last 3 years and a lot of the advice shared in this topic is true.

I am constantly surprised how little effort gets put in resumes and cover letters. As a hiring manager, I like reading cover letters because it gives me more insight into the candidate's personality than a resume does. Everything from the greeting, to what they choose to include, to how they explain the "why" of wanting the job.

Many cover letters have the wrong position title on it, sometimes even the wrong company on it. I've seen this with VP level candidates I've hired, not just entry level.

Some resumes are just too much. I don't care about your objective. Just tell me what you can do. If you want to have an introductory section, I find much more valuable a summary of qualifications, basically an outline of the resume with the most important and relevant qualities. That's more useful than an objective.

Don't put your high school, your GPA, or extracurriculars in college unless it's an entry level job and that's all the experience you have. I care more about previous jobs, what you achieved in those jobs, and any outside community involvements and trainings you received that would make you an asset to this job.

Most importantly, I like to see an ability to communicate and work with other people. Regardless of your previous work experience, I need to know you play well with others and can work across departments. My biggest issues with employee hires that don't last is employees that can't (or wont) communicate effectively, either to solve problems or to build relationships across departments to improve efficiencies.

I used to foster three girls and this was always a tough one for me. I intentionally planned my outings in places that had unisex bathrooms in case I had to take them. But that was not always possible.

The girls were 5, 4, and 2, and sometimes I had to take one of them (or all three of them) into the men's room to use the bathroom. No one really seemed to care, fortunately. Depending on the girl, and the bathroom layout, I either waited outside the stall, or had to go into the stall with them.

I don't think people would find it socially acceptable for me to take them into the women's restroom. I only had to do it once when the men's room had surprisingly a long line and the oldest really needed to go or risk having an accident. I rushed in carrying her to the stall so I think the women understood what was happening, lol.

I liked the movie for its competent main cast. I liked that for the most part, the decisions they made were rational, not like in most horror movies where bad stuff happens to the characters because of their own stupidity.

In a way, the ending was such a downer because they were all such level-headed, likeable people just trying to survive. But I guess it makes sense in context.

I also agree that I would have preferred the movie without the monsters. The horrors of the first half of the movie felt so real because they can be.

Like the episode where Carrie finds out that Kevin fantasizes about other women, so she created "approved fantasies" in flashcards that allowed Kevin to use when he needed them. They all involved Carrie dying in some heroic way so Kevin woupd find solice in another woman, but was very cringey and fanfic-y. I thought that was hilarious and haven't seen that in any other show.

Or when Carrie has a new boss named Doug and accidentally tells him "I love you" on the phone out of habit, only for that to blow up when the boss starts hitting on her.

I think the show has some very memorable episodes and Doug and Carrie's chemistry is wonderful (moreover than Raymond and his wife). And as mentioned earlier, Arthur is hilarious.

36, married but no kids.

I used to feel behind the curve, simply because all my friends and siblings started having kids before me. I've wanted kids for a while but my wife struggles with pregnancy. I also want 4+ kids so I felt I was lagging.

But I've come to terms that it will happen when it happens. There's no real age limit for me to have kids. And we'll be freezing my wife's eggs next year to afford us more years of trying. Lastly, adoption is an option, and I could well adopt into my 50s and 60s if I wanted to.

So for now, we are enjoying our peaceful and money-filled lives until the day we have kids.

First episode, but thats because I love musicals.

Unfortunately, the show's title is misleading and makes it sound like a show its not.

The show is incredibly witty and lampshades so many television, movie, and musical tropes by poking fun at them with eccentric musical numbers.

The show also plays on character and gender stereotypes by flipping them over their heads.

But most interestingly, the show can get surprisingly serious by showing the very harmful effects of mental health issues when left untreated. I was surprised how the zany situations at the beginning of the show suddenly became more serious when you realize the main character is in serious need of mental help but chooses to instead deny it and live in the fantastical world she created.

I really recommend people give the show a try. The writing kinda gives me a Community vibe, with some 30 Rock and Cougartown in there.

When I was a foster parent, the case worker who did our monthly visits dinged us because our house "smelled like dog". Yes, because we owned two dogs. Apparently, a dog smell was grounds for a write-up, which we had to have corrected within a week or they would remove the foster kids from our home.

Foster parents are held to almost impossible standards to raise kids that aren't theirs, with all sorts of psychological issues from past trauma, yet biological parents are given an insane amount of leeway where things like this can happen.

Stories like these just piss me off, as we fostered due to not being able to have kids of our own, and the system put us through hell for something we volunteered to do. And then you have parents like this who cannot appreciate the kids they do have, and care more about themselves and "winning" than the kids they supposedly fought so hard to keep. And the system often enables this kind of behavior with the number of chances bio parents are given to clean themselves up.

The weirdest part about this for me is when I travelled to a conference with some coworkers. Since we spent multiple nights together, I saw their early morning and late night experiences head on.

Each morning, they would immediately go for the coffee at the hotel, then the coffee provided at the conference. They claimed it would help them perk up for the day.

Then, at 5pm, they all immediately went to the hotel bar to drink alcohol, claiming it would help them wind down their day.

Now I don't know if this was simply because they were at a conference, but it was concerning to me that they basically spent the whole day with either caffeine or alcohol in their system. Are they ever not being influenced by something? It's just one of those adulthood norms I will never understand.

For the record, I dont drink alcohol nor caffeine. I have nothing against those who do, but I don't understand the obsession.

I enjoyed it. It's just the internet hate machine prevented people from really talking about it when it aired.

I appreciate that the jokes were authentic and relatable. The running joke about Howard being a failure for only having a masters in aerospace engineering while the others had phds in theoretical Sciences was hilarious, not just because "haha no phd", but this is a very real rivalry. My wife is an aerospace engineer and the physics majors always walked around with a superiority complex against the "applied" Sciences.

I also love the arguments they'd get into, like whether the Hulk could pick up a table holding Thor's hammer. They're the same kind of discussion topics you'd find on CE back in the day.

I also read articles about how they hired nerdy consultants to assist with the physics problems and even the comics/video game jokes. Also helps a lot of the cast enjoy those things too. You can tell by the attention to detail in so many of their pop culture need references.

TopicThe chance of Trump winning another term is very real
Zanzenburger
08/03/23 8:26:33 AM

It looks like the article's main evidence for their claim is this statement:

To put that in perspective, Trump never led in a single national poll that met CNNs standards for publication for the entirety of the 2020 campaign. Biden was up by high single digits in the late summer of 2019. Biden is up by maybe a point in the average of all 2024 polls today.

The problem with this assertion is that the article fails to mention the change in polling methodologies between 2016 and 2023. With several polling groups being extremely left-biased, resulting in some of the snafus in the 2016 election (and to a lesser extent the 2020 election), many of them have corrected themselves to account for the "hidden" Trump support that wasn't being weighed properly. So naturally, polls will have a heavier Republican lean than before.

All this means is that we may see less extreme differences between polls that, say, predict Blue +10 and end up being Red +3 (in theory). I'm not surprised we are seeing closer polls now.

Additionally, as the article states, general election polling right now is meaningless. There is no predictive validity. While we can certainly have a discussion, this feels like clickbait.

  • Despite the memes and marketing, I've never heard a lunk alarm and don't even know if they have one
  • People of all shapes and sizes come to my gym, from instagram models to people stepping into a gym for the first time in their lives, and everything in between
  • They have a great TRX machine that gets a lot of use as a blend of free weights and assisted workouts
  • They do not, and have not ever served pizza or donuts since I've been there. They have tootsie rolls by the entrance if you want one
  • They stick to the "judgment-free zone" mantra. I do the personal training regularly, and when I skip a few weeks, the trainer doesn't give me a hard time about it nor try to guilt me about it like other trainers have done. I've found it's kept me much more consistent.
  • They have very lax dress code standards; basically nothing offensive or exposing toes; everything else is fair game: https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/club-faqs

This is such a bizarre take on Superman and I'm loving it.

The anime style works for it as does the innocent nature of everything. I love that they are actually making Clark a mild-mannered guy who means well instead of a brooding loner. I also love that Clark and Lois' relationship is very clearly forming, showing them crushing on each other but neither having the guts to just ask the other one out.

I am also tired of these will they, won't they stories where one likes the other, and by the time the other one notices them back, one has either gotten a bf/gf, or a misunderstanding causes the whole thing to reset to status quo. We don't see that here. Clearly they like each other and we can see the show is leading us towards their eventual relationship.

I just think the show is very positive overall without being boring. And Clark actually stands up for himself. I love that he confronted Lois when she lied to him. He didn't just let her get away with it because she's cute.

The action scenes are pretty basic but I imagine they will get better as the season goes on. I also love that he's discovering his powers along the way. More fun that just having them all at the start.

I did this. 100% worth it. I've had the new hair for 3 years now and I feel great about it.

Prices start at $6k, so $10k seems reasonable if it's a lot of hair to replace. The process takes 8-12 hours, hence the large cost. It usually involves the doctor and 1-2 nurses individually pulling out the hair follicles from the back of your head and manually inserting them into the balding areas.

It's not an easy procedure and gets very long. But the end result is worth it imo.
