TopicThose who have had success with weight loss, how do I do it?
Zanzenburger

I got some great advice one time. Something along the lines of "it took you 5, 10, or even 15 years to get to the weight you currently are. How do you expect to lose it in 90 days?"

Basically, people are too quick about getting results in record time, when the weight gain was likely gradual over several years. While rapid weight loss is possible, it takes considerable amount of dedication and might not even be the best option for some people.

It's best to find a healthy eating/exercise routine that you can maintain over a long period of time and aim to lose the weight as a lifestyle, not as a quick fix with a goal to be ___ by ___ date.

I've taken the slow-and-steady approach and I've already lost 14 pounds, after trying unsuccessfully for years on "diets" and "boot camp" style programs. All I do now is run 3 times a week, do some strength training at the gym or at home 2 times a week, and food prep my meals to appropriate portions. While I didn't completely cut out fast food and soda, I've limited it significantly and I definitely feel the difference.

His case makes sense, just as the case would have made sense the other way around too.

The issue is that more people should be standing up for salary discrimination that those that actually do. Women getting paid unfairly less have every right to argue for equal treatment. The challenge is getting them to say something or do something about it.

In my experience, white men are more likely to speak up in these types of situations than women and minorities. That just makes the optics look rather one-sided.

I'm about halfway there. I live in a rural town in a neighborhood that's very out of the way (and hard to find without a map since we are smack dab in the middle of three lakes and a nature conservation). But we are still only 40 minutes away from a major city.

But it's still an HOA neighborhood, so while the region is rural, the neighborhood itself is suburban. I'm saving up to buy some acreage of land further out for my wife, me, and the pups and cats.

Most of the things we do for fun anyways are either nature-related or virtual, so the lifestyle doesn't bother us. I've always hated city life.

Morning showers are the best. They help wake me up, it makes my hair easier to style, and that clean feeling after a shower just puts me in a better mood overall and makes me feel more confident.

I've gotten to the point where just hearing the shower running will start waking me up before I step foot into the water. My body is just conditioned that way.

I also shower at night after a workout, but it's typically more of a quick rinse just to get the sweat off. Showers too close to bed ensure I won't fall asleep for another 2-3 hours.

In my particular case, I looked for positions in very rural areas. It's much harder to find jobs specific to your industry, but the few that do exist tend to be easier to get as there aren't as many qualified candidates opting to live in rural towns for lower pay.

The job had very low pay, but they compensated for it by giving me a good title. Plus, the cost of living in rural areas is much lower so the pay still worked out nicely. The additional benefit is that after a few years, I was able to go work in a much more urban, populated area now that I had experience, and the elevated title opened many doors for me.

The main thing with the "Persona in college" idea is that Japan and America have very different college lives. In America, college is seen as a time of freedom, you're no longer living under your parents, etc. whereas Japanese college is well, studystudystudy. Therefore the sense of freedom is associated with high school in Japanese society hence why many look back to it with nostalgia and why high school settings are popular. At least that's what I hear, I'm no expert.
I'd say you're largely correct in that the US has a very unique culture surrounding college and universities that is not found (as often) in other countries. Campus life such as the dude throwing the frisbee, the girl studying on a blanket under the tree, the fraternity parties, etc. are mainly a US thing. Go to South America, Asia, Africa, and even Europe in many places and universities don't have as strong of a "student life" focus. It's mostly just academics and studies.

Though I have seen a few universities in some European countries slant more in that direction to attract top US talent but it's still not a majority.

I feel like this is the anime-equivalent to live action American movies having adults playing high schoolers (i.e. Mean Girls, American Pie).

Though in the live action movies, they use adults simply because of the sexual situations the characters get involved in and you can't have minors doing those. That's not really an issue in anime, so I'd guess it's like the other user said that it's to appeal to the show's intended demographic (high schoolers).

Her character was just an awful person overall with no redeeming qualities.

Carmen, while the stereotypical vapid teenager, at least had some good traits that made her a more well-rounded character.

TopicBeing a landlord is the ultimate scam.
Zanzenburger
02/05/21 9:09:18 AM

I was a landlord for a few years, as my job offered me and my wife a live-on position at work so we rented our empty primary home.

One thing you don't hear much about is how scummy so many tenants can be. In the span of five years, we had tenants who:
  • took advantage of our kindness by continually asking for rent extensions, the bill kept adding up and didn't pay; when we sent them an eviction warning notice, they added a padlock to the door so we couldn't get into our own house (and a nasty note on the door); once we started court proceedings, they abandoned the property without telling us and left all their crap in there for us to throw out (which included moldy furniture and stains on walls)
  • other tenants who destroyed appliances and made holes in the walls and doors and refused to pay for them; the damage was much more than the deposit they paid so that came out of our pockets
  • built a counter and made a few other minor improvements in the home (without asking us); upon moving out, charged us for the improvements that we didn't request nor approve; threatened to sue us for the work they did if we didn't pay their asking price
  • Couldn't pay rent due to job layoff; offered to do work around the house and property in lieu of rent for a while; we agreed and had new contract made up. Three months later, no work was done and we had to evict him, while making no money during that time.

These were all separate tenants with separate issues.

With that being said, we did have a few really good tenants that were great to work with, paid on time, and gave plenty of notice before leaving.

But I can see why some landlords are ruthless when it comes to rent, deposits, background checks, rent increases, and lack of flexibility. They've likely been burned by bad tenants and the law in most states makes it almost impossible to evict someone in a timely manner, costing a lot of money in both court fees and lost rent during the process.

I still think it's scummy what landlords do and the whole concept of landlording when one person owns dozens of homes to rent, but I also have seen the other side and what goes on with so many tenants.

TopicAnyone feel unsatisfied with their life?
Zanzenburger
02/04/21 9:27:40 AM

Here's the funny thing about life satisfaction. It doesn't exist, at least not permanently. Anyone who says they are satisfied are either lying to you, or they are experiencing the honeymoon period of a recent life accomplishment. We have to constantly work at it, any individual thing that brings us happiness will only do so for so long.

The problem is that TV and movies show us that there is a "happily ever after", or where you achieve this one thing that satisfies you for the rest of your life. That "one" thing doesn't exist. Happiness is something that we are constantly refreshing with our day-to-day tasks.

To give you an example, I love school. I did well at school. Once I finished college (undergrad), I went straight to get a Master's degree. After finishing that, I had a year where I felt aimless and unsatisfied (despite having a job, car, home, wife, etc). So I went back to school to get my PhD. Finishing that, I felt aimless and unsatisfied again, and went back to school to get a second Master's. Each of those achievements made me happy, but only for a little while. I once again felt aimless, and like I was just drifting. I'd lie there some nights just wondering what's the point of it all. I imagine celebrities, CEOs, and other people that appear to have it all have these same thoughts.

I've learned that it's not so much about what you have or don't have (to an extent), it's about what you are looking forward to, what you are working towards. When there's nothing to look forward to, we hit an existential crisis.

One solution that has been working for me is volunteering. It's something that is rather easy to do (for those who have a hard time getting motivated to start a new project), you don't have to commit large periods of time, and you can immediately see the results of your labor. It also feels really good to help others. Since the pandemic started, I've been volunteering at a food bank that gives food to needy families. I was only going to go a few times, but I loved it and have been doing it every week for a year. I've also gone out and helped with other short-term volunteering events, like city-wide cleanups and building/painting houses for the needy. That feeling of purpose by helping others in need is amazing. You get to talk to other people who are hurting and truly in need of, not just food and supplies, but of another friendly soul to talk to. I feel like we help each other out. When I'm having a hard week, I look forward to the next time I can do some good in the world and leave my mark of kindness.

Just my two cents.

I work a food distribution site every week that opened up since the pandemic started. It's drive-through style, so we have hundreds of cars stop by and pick up food boxes for their families.

We don't even require IDs. They tell us how many are in their family, and how many kids, then as they go down the line, we give them food for that size. We even allow them to pick up for other families that aren't present.

So we can have one car picking up for 3 families of 6 people each. That's a lot of food and there's no way for us to verify if they are actually taking it to other families or keeping it all for themselves.

Our stance on it is that we are just doing our jobs to feed people in need. If someone chooses to lie to get more food, then they clearly need it. It's not our place to judge who is considered "poor" enough to require food assistance.

It's worked pretty well so far. Almost a year of doing this and we haven't seen an increase in multi-family cars, which is what I was expecting once word got out that we didn't verify numbers. I think people are more honest than we sometimes give them credit for.

Imagine your average neighborhood having gravel lawns instead of grasses

it would look too depressing in the long term, and believe it or not itd have an effect on the locals temperature, all that rock would reflect the heat.

humans instinctively want to be close to plants and a body of water, this is why so many communities have a fountain or a little lake thingy too
This. I grew up in an urban area with no lawns. Just houses and paved driveways, with the occasional tree down the sidewalk. It just looks really depressing. Even not knowing that houses with big, grassy lawns existed, I could feel that this wasn't right. It kind of reminded me of that episode of Spongebob in the future where everything was chrome.

Nature is good for your health. We need to see green. That's why cities work so hard to build parks and other areas with foliage. As the other user stated, it also helps with drainage to prevent flooding.

Granted, I do think that some people go overboard with the size of their manicured lawns. I'd be fine with gardens, moss, or other types of natural plants. Unfortunately, most cities and HOAs don't allow for anything besides manicured grass.

TopicHow do you not get depressed about looks?
Zanzenburger
02/03/21 2:53:26 PM

Master Kazuya posted...
Whaddup DsDude(19?). Yeah raising looks is a factor. I used to be way more fit and active in my early 20s but I've suffered some injuries from doing as such and I'm a little hesitant to go back in. I'm still in decent shape physically. I've been experimenting at work with styling my hair a different way every day, just for fun. My coworker is a hot guy and he puts a lot into grooming, so I figure I have no excuse to at least make my hair look cooler.

Those girls might have different preferences but even among preferences, there's still fundamental traits of attractive vs unattractive. Even among us guys, we don't all prefer 100% the same thing, for example most of us prefer 2 eyes that aim towards the same thing than a lazy eye. We like good teeth no matter what specific types of teeth we like. With girls, girls that like the nerdy guy like cute nerdy guys. They like distinguished academic high achieving guys with swag than just someone who's smart. If they pick a guy that doesn't look super good, it's because he's 100% of what they want instead of 90% what they want. Otherwise they'll try the 90% guy and either hope, settle for, or dedicate their life to change him into the extra 10%.

Lastly, I feel like it's unhealthy to assume "oh those hot guys are shallow". Let's say there are a pool of 100 hot guys for your sister to date and 35 of them are shitty guys. What about the other 65? Those guys are hot AND have their shit figured out. I feel like this is something average/ugly people tell themselves to feel better, me being one of them. Those hot-but-shitty guys are valuable until proven otherwise, whereas in average people's lives the opposite is true, shitty until proven valuable.
Good points. Regarding your last comment, I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I wasn't saying that all the guys my sister-in-law dated were shallow (or assumed as such). By her own admission, she has told me that she tends to fall for a guy's looks first, dates them, then realizes that their looks are the only thing going for them and she ends the relationship. Not that they are all that way, but the ones she has dated happened to be that way, and that's opened her eyes to be more selective about who she chooses to be in a relationship with. So nowadays, even when she sees a conventionally-attractive guy, she pauses, and really gets to know him first before she dates him.

I guess my point of that was that looks, while they are first thing people notice upon meeting you, only get you so far. There are girls (and guys) out there that have been burned by taking a "date based on looks only" approach that, as a result, have elevated traditionally-secondary traits such as confidence, personality, and kindness and mix them into the equation much earlier than they would have previously.

It is true that some people are more gifted genetically and have an easier time achieving whatever "look" society accepts as superior. But there's a few caveats to that.

  • Anyone can raise their "look" on the attractiveness scale. Losing weight, building muscle, being well-groomed, wearing clothes that fit and is classy/sporty/hipster/whatever image you are going for, treating acne/other blemishes, wearing makeup (for women), experiment with facial hair combinations (for men), and if you have the disposable income, get Lasek to rid of the glasses or a hair transplant to heal balding spots if you feel those are a detriment to you
  • The second point is that while there is the "Hollywood male" or "GQ male" look that people strive for, not all tastes are the same. I've known girls that perform the skinny, Edward from Twilight look, others that prefer the buff Dwayne Johnson look, and others that appreciate the slightly thicker lumberjack look (especially in the central US/northwest). Preferences vary, so your best bet is to learn what type of "look" you are naturally built for and aim for that, rather than trying to attain a "look" that you have no possible way of achieving. For example, many guys will never look like a Disney prince no matter how hard they try. Their head shape, body shape, jaw line, facial structure just aren't fit for that. But they can still attain a look that others can find attractive if they work with what they do have.
  • And lastly, I know you mention in your OP the importance of the other factors such as personality, confidence, etc., but I do want to emphasize that they complete the package. My sister-in-law has dated guys based on nothing but looks, and quickly finds out they are either shallow, stupid, abusive, or all of the above, and her relationships have ended horribly. Looks do give people an unfair advantage as that is the first thing you notice about a person. But the other factors become important after the first meeting. Looks alone don't make people happy, as you can see from the many Hollywood stars with failed marriages and other conventionally-attractive people who have taken their own lives due to depression.
All this to say, looks shouldn't be the most important thing in life, even though it might be for some people. Regardless, there are ways you can improve your own looks, just try for something that fits your own features, rather than trying to strive for a particular look you saw on TV or a movie.

Put yourself in your employer's shoes for the job for which you are applying. Does your employment experience make a case as to why you would be good at this job? If yes, put it in there. If no, leave it out.

A resume is a short, persuasive document telling an employer why you are the best candidate for the job. Anything that does not speak to your qualifications of the job is just filler and should be removed.

With that being said, there are many jobs at face value that may not seem to correlate with a job for which you are applying, but can be reworded in a way to make it fit better. Some skills may be transferable, but you have to make it crystal clear to the employer what those skills are.

I start with the top, simply for the fact that anything that falls out would be caught again when I flossed the bottom.

Flossing starting from the bottom is like mopping the floor first and then cleaning the counters, which would then drop dust back to the floor... <.<

Yeah Phil was horrible in the first season. The show was so cringe and not in a good way. I think it gets better later on as the cast grows. Phil becomes more lovable and Melissa improves... a little.

I loved it, but depending on how much of a purest you are, YMMV. Like I said in another post, it's basically Seinfeld with Looney Tunes characters.
The wackiness is extremely toned down to the point I question if a kid would even enjoy watching it.

Plots revolve around things like Daffy climbing the corporate ladder in a mega company before accidentally bankrupting it and Yosemite Sam getting caught up in a pyramid scheme and annoying everyone trying to get them to join, lol. It is pure situational comedy.
Yeah, it was more grounded sitcom with a plot and less wacky shorts.

Bugs and Daddy were the protagonists with everyone else rounding out the cast of recurring characters.

I thought it was great. But I can see Looney Tunes purists not enjoying the more scripted nature of the plots

You can get up there with a triple jump
From where? The platform next to it is too short for the triple jump and the next platform is too far away?

Remember in Scrubs when Elliot flashed a terminal cancer patient who wanted to see a girl's chest before he died.
I immediately thought of this scene when I read the topic title.

I made the mistake of collecting the 100th coin on that red grate you can shimmy on, the fucking star popped above the red grate and was unreachable. Had to redo the 100 coins, I was pissed
Damn, that sucks.

This happened to me in Boo's castle. My last coin was a blue coin I got from one of the flying books. The star popped up above one of the bookshelves, slightly clipping through the ceiling. I couldn't reach up there from the ground, and it wasn't high enough for me to get from the second floor. Had to to it again.

As far as most annoying level for me on the replay, it was the levels that required the pink Bob-omb in Wet dry world. While I knew that the height of your jump affected the starting water level, I did not know that the high jump allowed a water level higher than the switches and was the only way to reach the pink Bob-omb. Basically, if you didn't enter the level the correct way, there was no way to get up there.

The concept of these sound great, but they have the same issue as the CYOA books I read when I was younger.

They give you the illusion of choice, but outside of one or two major branching paths, the rest of the choices don't matter because there is a "right" and "wrong" choice. And if you choose the "wrong" choice, the story ends right there and directs you to the "right" choice. So ultimately, it's more of a quiz to see if you'd make the choice the writers want you to make.

This happened with the Kimmy Schmidt special and the Black Mirror episode. There were only one or two major points in each story where you could actually choose a meaningful trajectory in the story. The rest of the choices just wrapped back around to the main story being told.
