Lol.

On topic, eh... sort of? If we're going to kick them, let's kick their buyers too, so they don't create markets where scalping is profitable.
My view is that buyers are created through the act of scalping. Nobody would pay $500 more than the retail price of a PS5 if PS5 consoles were available at retail. Stop the scalpers, stop the buyers market.

TopicHow do YOU feel about BLM/Transgender People?
MrMallard

I respect BLM's cause. Black Americans live in a world where they're targeted by police more and tend to be thrown in jail on more minor infractions than other races, and this movement sprung out of recurring police killings of black men.

Anti-BLM types have made their case against Michael Brown. But I don't think you can weasel your way out of Eric Garner's death. I don't think you can justify the shooting if a 12 year old for holding a prop gun - Tamir Rice's death at the hands of police only gets more perverse and disturbing with people like Dylan Roof and Kyle Rittenhouse killing people and going on the run, only to get taken in alive by the police. But a 12 year old boy with a fake gun, who looked threatening to some but who was responsible for no physical harm, was shot and killed by police. George Floyd suffocated to death on the asphalt over some funny money. I personally don't think Michael Brown reached for an officer's gun, and nothing can justify the hours that his dead body spent baking on the hot street without any emergency services coming to claim the body or take control of the crime scene. It was Michael Brown's neglected corpse lying in the street for hours that radicalised Ferguson to take action and gave birth to the BLM movement.

BLM flare up and protest when black people are murdered in the street, or in their own homes. Their protests are met with mysterious pallets of bricks sitting in the street, or with law enforcement waiting with vans to abduct protestors and make them sign legal documents under duress. I support them 100%, because they react to injustice and they aim to hold murderers in power to account.

As for transgender people:

I know what it feels like to be ostracized for feelings out of my control, or beyond my own comprehension. As such, I tend to support groups who don't have much of a voice, or who face severe backlash for aspects of themselves that they can't control or even find the words for at first. While I support the wider LGBTQIA+ community, I gravitate towards bi, ace and trans people in particular because I've seen firsthand how harshly they're treated within that wider community of queer identities.

It isn't always so easy picking sides to support - I'm on board with "queer" as a reclaimed term, but as someone who particularly hates the f-slur, I understand how certain words can just make someone's skin crawl. For some people, that word is "queer", and there's a big backlash against it at the moment (headed in a lot of ways by exclusionists, but I don't begrudge people who legitimately have a bad history with it). So that's a thing I have to feel out ahead of time.

But I have no qualms standing up for bi, asexual and transgender people. I resent the cynicism of exclusionist discourse, saying that these groups are invaders who make LGBTQIA+ spaces less safe for "actual" LGBTQIA+ people. The discourse around trans people, the furore over bathrooms and dorms and shoes - the current narrative of AMAB individuals making women's spaces less safe for women - has roots in the community's rejection of bisexuality (they want to make us believe they're one thing, and then dump us for the other thing to traumatise us) and asexuality (they don't face any real discrimination compared to us, and they appropriate the spaces of people who do struggle with discrimination).

Transphobic rhetoric has existed for decades beforehand in similar and different forms, of course - this is just the latest backlash. The concerned leftist who supports the uplifting of all marginalised groups, who refuses to see trans people as a marginalised group and chooses to see them as disingenuous trolls destroying the sanctity of queer spaces through their "invasion". A victory for anti-LGBTQIA+ groups, turning progressive groups against each other.

But transgender people have a reduced quality of life if expected to perform as an identity they don't resonate with. They live each day at a time, accepting comments about themselves that they feel belong to a different person who isn't there. There's a disconnect between who they're recognised as, and who they feel they are. And they tend to thrive, to come into their own, when they can live freely as another gender.

Transgender people need all the support they can get, because they don't always get the same acceptance and happiness for them in queer communities as other, more "socially acceptable" identities. Which I believe is a perversion of what the LGBTQIA+ community is meant to stand for. And they're copping a flogging in hetero- and cis-normative spaces as well. They just want to live in accordance with their self-image, to find acceptance and solace in a picture of themselves that aligns with how they see themselves.

Gay people tend to be raised in a heteronormative environment. They tend to either discover and acknowledge their gayness early in their lives, hiding it from the world at large because they understand the negative connotations of it through family members, friends and the general atmosphere of the world they live in, or they live their lives internalizing those negative beliefs and not understanding why they aren't attracted to the opposite sex. Why they're sad all the time, and why they can't seem to achieve any sort of real catharsis. And then they realise that they're gay - and whether they're traumatized over their deep-seated internalised beliefs or relieved at receiving the catharsis they've been missing for so long - or both at the same time - is anyone's guess.

I believe that the experience of being transgender is comparable to that. Except with trans people, there's a push to recognise it as mental illness, to acknowledge it as a deeper level of deviacy from the other identities. For there to be a fundamentally more severe disconnect than with other queer identities.

Gay people were viewed as mentally ill too, though. They were subjected to corrective rape. They were institutionalised and lobotomized. They were sterilized, and lumped in with sex offenders and pedophiles. And through broader action by the LGBT community, they were finally accepted by society at large.

Trans people are still being subjected to conversion practices. They're still painted as mentally deficient or morally deviant compared to other queer identities. In countries like Australia, in order to be recognised as transgender on your official documents, you have to submit yourself to sterilization. And radfem groups are determined to paint them as dangerous rapists and degenerate invaders to women's spaces. AFAB trans people slip completely under the radar, which I'm guilty of perpetuating.

The only way trans people will be able to attain a quality of life they can work with is through broader action through the LGBTQIA+ community. And I will be a component of that through whatever means I can use.

Okay, I'm confused.

Is this specifically over the woman who compared the Republican party to Jewish people before the holocaust, insinuating that Democrats were about to perform human rights violations against them in the wake of the January 6th insurrection attempt?

Did James Gunn get cancelled all over again, or are they bringing up his poor treatment beforehand - which, to my knowledge, was due to conservatives going back through popular media creators' Twitter feeds like Dan Harmon in an attempt to get in on the cancelling for once?

As for AIDS Reagan defined it as a "gay disease" and once that decision was made, I don't believe he cared that much afterwards. For a time, like Trump did with Fauci, he forbade his surgeon general to even talk about it.

The whole story of Reagan and AIDS is in And the Band Played On.
What I know of the situation comes from Lindsey Ellis's video about RENT. Pretty solid cliff notes version if nothing else, with an entertainingly critical take on RENT sandwiched between it.

The part where she juxtaposed the glitzy, shallow dancing of RENT with a guy from the CDC going "it's a PLAGUE! it's a FUCKING PLAGUE!" was pretty amazing. And she points out that the word passed down to the CDC from Reagan was "look pretty and do as little as possible".

I knew it existed, and that one day I'll look back and put my life since then into perspective - but knowing I'm going to be around in the future and a part of people's lives for years to come doesn't alleviate my feeling of dread, of being able to imagine a future for everyone else where I'm not there.

I'm on episode 6 of season 1. I love how jubilant and flippant she is, and I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop where she tells everyone about her cancer.

I've read a spoiler, which is a shame. I was rooting for her son to get with Andrea, but I don't think that's gonna happen, which is a bummer. I'm also kinda shipping her with the doctor, but that seems like an exercise in misery.

I think my favorite line so far has been after she coerced her doctor to take her house-hunting. He's like "I hope I get to meet your son someday" and she replies "I'll invite you both to the funeral :D". I hope her brother gets less annoying as the show goes on, and I've given up on her husband.

If you spoil anything beyond this point, I hope your mother gets herpes. If you haven't seen the show yet, catch up and let's watch it together. It's very wry so far, and I just adore Laura Kinney's inflection and her ongoing journey through the different stages of grief.

It's just what I need to wash the bad taste of Boston Legal out of my mouth - I grew up watching the show and I like the characters, but Christ, that show is getting so leery and gross as the third season stretches on and it's trying my patience. Hearing Laura Linney say hardcore expletives and watching the demented glee she has in spending all her money is a great pick me up when Boston Legal gets too uncomfortable to watch at points.

Stardew Valley is bae. The dev is already a millionaire, but considering the work he put into such a quality game, I would wholeheartedly direct other people to contribute to his Scrooge McDuck-style money pile.

Brave Dungeon is a pretty neat casual dungeon crawler. A Robot Named Fight is a pretty solid Metroidvania roguelite with very Super Metroid-y physics, though if you take issue with how roguelites build from a library of chunks, it might be a rough time - otherwise, it has a ton of unlockable areas and power ups, and you can even unlock the Super Metroid wall jump.

If you're into fitness, Ring Fit Adventure might be the best fitness video game on the market today. And if you're hankering for a Mario fix, you can't go wrong with the 3D Collection.

I hope it's adult in the sense that it's mature. Like, more in line with the down to earth parts of Bojack Horseman, or more in the vein of Daria.

A Velma animated series sounds great. I genuinely want to see it. I dunno if I want to hear Velma quip about her panties riding up the front and stuff like that, at least not to the degree that a show like Harley Quinn is a bunch of mile-a-minute adult jokes. Harley Quinn is great, don't get me wrong, but that's Harley Quinn. This is Velma.

I think a big draw to a character like Velma is that she's a more down to earth character. Fred's kind of a clueless leader, Daphne's charismatic, Shaggy is a lovable coward and Scooby is a talking dog who mirrors Shaggy. Velma grounds the team, and I think her character can be milked for a lot of depth. So I hope we do get a more personal, Daria-esque sort of show, as opposed to a Harley Quinn-adjacent yukfest.

This is probably the most substantial sequel to a Persona game ever. It's not a rhythm game, or a fighting game, or a non-canon dungeon crawler. It's an action RPG directly set after Persona 5, acting as a continuation of the story.

I'm sure it won't be exactly like Hyrule Warriors - which is the only musou game I've ever played - but it'll probably be familiar and satisfying enough that I'll enjoy it right off the bat. I'm looking forward to it.

I had an idea for an alt called WorstPossibleScenario or something at one point, because I was just kinda like that for a while.

My thoughts on this would probably be:

  • Insurrectionists storm the Capitol building
  • Biden is killed in the clash, creating a power vacuum
  • Trump claims that since there isn't an adequate replacement, he won't cede the position
  • Kamala Harris and other democrats contest this - as VP she'd probably take over the position
  • Trump doubles down on "they stole the election" in the face of Kamala Harris assuming the position of president, playing to his supporters' ignorance and bad faith tendencies to whip them up into a violent fervor, as "no-one voted Kamala Harris for President".
  • More right-wing clashes happen across the country, some of which are enabled by the more right-wing police force (seeing as Capitol security outright let people into the building, this isn't too far of a stretch)
  • Other democratic senators are attacked and/or killed. Moderate conservatives raise objections, a majority of the party goes all in on Trump.
  • Trump stays in power and conducts press around the clock to normalise what he's done.
  • America has fallen to fascism, and the people who have taken positions of power by force will never let go of them again.

How much were you drinking? Im at like a pint a day now and its time to quit again.

as for who talked about withdrawals, they vary person to person, but at my level there are going to be some for certain.
I was getting blackout drunk 3-4 days a week at one point, at the height of the pandemic. I would leave my friend's house early on Thursday nights so I could buy longnecks of premixed bourbon and get blackout drunk at my kitchen table.

I honestly think the bigger factor was my sugar intake in relation to alcohol. I got the arm tinglies in both of my arms after I necked a 300ml bottle of straight Kahlua. I also had a period of experimentation after my blood test, and while I got the arm tingles in my left arm after 3 Woodstock longnecks, I didn't get the arm tingles after drinking the equivalent amount of alcohol in low-carb cider.

But I'm sober all the same. It's probably been better for my personality, but fuck I miss slipping into oblivion.

TopicWhat would bother you more? Your friend being into lolis or into incest?
MrMallard
02/09/21 2:06:23 PM
#28
As gross as incest is, simulated incest is a prominent porn category that's targeted at people on pretty much every major porn site. It's a darker side of human sexuality that porn producers are actively working to exploit, and while it's creepy and weird, the sheer volume of it and the focus on it has rendered it socially acceptable to a degree. Not a fan, I recently saw a Boston Legal episode that ended with incest and it was really unpleasant and disturbing, but ultimately the subject has the pull that it does on porn sites, and that's kind of the porn landscape we're in at the moment. If my friend was into it, I'd be skeeved out but I would understand the sheer volume of gross incest shit that probably informed his "thing".

Lolicons sexualise the look and behavior of kids. They fawn over how "cute" the behavior is, and they get off to that innocent childlike behavior and associated speech patterns while those characters are getting fucked, mostly by frustrated middle aged men or NEETs in whatever media it's occurring in. It's a fucking horror show, and for this to be normalised alongside MAPs and the like is a fucking revolting prospect. If my friend were into lolicon shit, I'd probably consider him an at-risk potential pedophile.

I don't like making that distinction because they're both pretty disturbing, but the sexual depiction of children skeeves me out more on a fundamental human level than the ever-normalized depiction of simulated incest. Kinda fucked up that furries get the bad wrap they do for the most extreme members of their community, and yet your average 4chan fuckface has less of a problem with lolicon as a whole. Shit's fucked up dude.

Edit: I'm not gonna take the OP into account, considering the ever-present meme of "turning the sound off to turn incest porn into normal porn" and the rise of MAPs piggybacking off of identity politics to normalise their pedophilia. I feel like there's a clear slant to push incest shit over loli shit in the OP, and while both are disgusting, I need to point out the sexualisation of young children in lolicon shit as the more abhorrent practice.

There's a song I really like called Bigfoot!, by The Weakerthans. It's a song about a man named Bobby Clark who claimed to see Bigfoot in northern Manitoba, and he would take news crews and the like out into the woods to talk about his encounter and to look for it. The issue being that a lot of these news crews were from current affair-type shows who were trying to make a buck by laughing at him and broadcasting it as a big joke.

There's a live recording of the song where the songwriter, John K. Samson, relays all of this information. And he sums it all up in a really beautiful way - he feels sympathy for Bobby Clark because he was wronged by the media for believing in something so outlandish, when he was just a man who was frightened by what he saw in the woods.

https://youtu.be/PUu1GL_knMY

The live version is arguably better, but you need to skip to 1:45 for the song itself and the stripped-back guitar part works a lot better when you hear the original song first.

I remember when conspiracies were fun nonsense like jfk was assassinated by mole people with laser guns
As I've gotten older, shit like that has gotten less innocent to me. Like idk if this is just me applying modern rhetoric to stupid loony bullshit from the past that's not necessarily that deep, but when I hear "mole people with laser guns", I can't help but hear an intended message of "Jews with top-secret weapons of the elite".

We know that terms like "mole person" and "elite" can be anti-Semitic dogwhistles, and we also know that anti-semitism has existed throughout human history - Jewish people have been a scapegoat of the ruling class for dozens of generations at least. There were anti-semitic conspiracy theories years before WWII that might have introduced those nested meanings to terms like "elite" and "mole person", and those meanings could have survived into the 60's as opposed to being re-introduced to the discourse by the first wave of neo-Nazis. After all, even through WWII, America was a deeply anti-semitic nation - it's not much of a stretch for this prejudice to survive in fringe groups, even through the era where the horrors of Nazi Germany were still being extolled.

The question is whether the conspiracy crowd of the 60s and beyond were using "mole person" exclusively to refer to a subterranean group of cryptids, or if there was an effort to conflate the idea of an underground race of masterminds committing murder to control the population with Jewish people.

That can of worms has been opened. I'd like to go back to a point in time where I hear "mole person with a ray gun" and say "wow that's such a silly idea", but with the reality of the situation - with the deeply prejudiced underbelly of conspiracy theories and anti-science movements that speak in nested terms like that - I can't separate a silly word from a nefarious intended meaning that hate groups are using to this day. Conspiracy theories just aren't that innocent any more, because I'm not that innocent any more.

I feel like it's because this narrative arose that was like "they're wrong but they're all potential scientists that are being rejected by the norm and being further alienated by that rejection". Some might be swayed to less fallacious ways of thinking but some people are so far down the rabbit hole that they're convinced they're right, and they can and will pull as many people down with them as they can.

Letting blatant bullshit have a platform has let the proponents of that bullshit lure more people in. The idea of gently nudging people towards the ideas and techniques we accept as factually correct is nice, but it's just led to the most twisted fuck-ups either manipulating those practices to justify their blatant bullshit and lend it an air of credance, or further radicalised them against the scientific majority for going so far against what they believe to be fact.

A narrative arose asking us to treat them with compassion and understanding, and the biggest con artists of the pseudoscience movement used that goodwill to take a shit in science's mouth and radicalize more people.

Prisoners are citizens. They should have a say in who runs their country.

Not to mention that in a bad enough situation, restricting voting rights for felons can be a stepping stone towards imprisoning people for the wrong reasons to impede their right to vote. If a regime decided that protesting their policies was illegal and anyone who protests for any reason went to jail, that would be one way of putting a dent in the opposition's votes and bolstering your own lead.

Ultimately, regardless of the crime, a citizen of the country should have a right to vote. Restricting voting rights of felons is a dangerous step towards putting your political opponents in jail to disadvantage the opposition. It could be argued that with a heightened focus on minority races being convicted of felonies and getting thrown into jail, that process of disenfranchisement is already well underway. It's inhumane and stupid.

I've been thinking a lot about Philosophy Tube lately. I only found her a couple of weeks ago through a playlist, after the new year but before her latest video. Her coming out video was astonishing, and my assumption is that Abigail had recorded the first part of the video in make-up. She had been performing as her pre-transition self for almost an entire year while she transitioned in the background, and I thought that for the first 2/3rds of her coming out video, she had stuck on a fake goatee and made herself up as her pre-transition self for the last time.

But I just learned that the character hosting the episode for all that time was another person. Abigail had another character playing her pre-transition self the entire time, and he nailed her inflection and tone - it was spot on. He delivered the monologue about living in the trenches, spoke as the person Abigail used to be, and bowed that person out to make way for her.

For this last week, I wondered how Abigail had found the strength to make herself up as her old self. I understand that dysphoria is a hell of an experience, and to be able to play that part of herself as a character was an incredible thought. But learning that it was another person playing that character didn't diminish from the impact - it might even be more impressive. I thought they were the same person. To a degree, they are - one retired character from the past of a blossoming new identity, just interpreted and played by someone else.

That character lives in the past 7 years of Philosophy Tube videos. But it's not her. It's not Abigail Thorn. And Abigail Thorn will never play that character again.

Todd in the Shadows did a One Hit Wonderland episode about it just the other day. Maybe learning about the group behind it, the lead up to the song and the music that came after it that failed to get as much attention can help you make peace with it.

Star Wars The Force awakens is top 3 in the entire saga

That's a good one. TFA was a return to form after the hit-and-miss prequel trilogy, the next generation of characters were arguably at their best in this movie, and it suffers the most from each subsequent sequel movie getting worse and worse.

It was a fine springboard, and it captured a spirit of adventure and action that Star Wars movies had been missing for decades. It suffers the most from each subsequent movie failing to capitalise on what TFA set up.

While it's not great, Spider-Man 3 is actually pretty okay. It benefits from movies like BvS and Suicide Squad scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Jak 2 is the worst mainline Jak and Daxter game. It's not necessarily bad, but the first game was a whole mood and the third game builds on 2's mechanics (gun upgrades, better Jetboard) and improves them significantly, even if the story can be hit or miss. Also, Seem is bae.

Lost Frontier doesn't count, leaving Jak 2 as the worst mainline Jak and Daxter game.

I was watching the first season of Boston Legal a year or two ago, and Jim O'Heir (Jerry/Garry/Larry) was in an episode as a mall Santa who got fired for being a crossdresser. It's one of the most humanizing episodes of the first season, and it might be one of my favorite episodes period - I'm watching season 3 on a streaming app, and I'm starting to get pretty grossed out with how the show treats women.

It's a pretty sympathetic portrayal of a gay person for 2004, and it even goes out of its way to mention that a majority of crossdressers are actually straight. It's an excellent performance by Jim O'Heir.

I tried some smaller scale dating apps before Tinder and Bumble, and I got two really quirky, unpleasant matches.

The first one was a woman who would carry a stuffed unicorn around with her in public, and if anyone made a fuss about it, she'd take pictures of them and put them on her Facebook to rant about them and shame them. I know this because she linked her Facebook profile and wanted me to send her a friend request.

The second one was a girl who asked for my mobile number the night we matched, and she called me like 30 seconds later. She then asked if I would be her boyfriend like 3 days later, I played along for like 30 minutes, and things got so awkward that I told her she was making me uncomfortable. I was with one of my friends when the latter part happened, and he said that I had basically had an entire relationship over the course of 3 days.

Twitter and Bumble don't have a high chance of success, but I would take a reduced change of success over the possibility of matching with Unicorn Girl and The 3-Day Relationship.

What do you mean by shallow?

Myself, I'm just over "toxic" themes in songs for the msot part.
For me it's everything or nothing. I like generally earnest, wholesome songs, like stuff from The Weepies or like the song In The Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee. But if something goes out of its way to be as toxic as it can be - like No Children by the Mountain Goats, or Maria Mena's breakdown of her toxic, abusive relationships - I can fuck with that too.

The issue I have is with casual, normalised toxicity in music. I don't like your standard "we used to be in love but then you changed and everything hurt and we're different people now" songs, or songs that romanticize this idea of being mistreated and left as a lesser person because of it. It's either someone romanticizing an old relationship that made them feel like shit, or romanticizing self-destructive traits because it's fun to be young and free with the freedom to ruin 3-5 years of your life with someone who never loved you.

I brought up Maria Mena earlier because I think that she goes deep into toxic behavior in her music. She has an album about her divorce, where she accuses her husband of being emotionally distant and being unsuited to an equal fulfillment of needs in a relationship - but in songs like Where I Come From and Bend Til I Break, she strongly implies that she physically hurt him during arguments and sought out other men to cheat. The core of the album is "this was a bad idea for both of us, and we both deserve better than each other". She also has a song lyric that goes like "My teen angst led me to look for something destructive, and there you were / with all the characteristics of my mom, familiarity of home".

I still like toxicity in my music, given that it's framed as toxicity. Songs like No Children scratched an itch I had for years, and I'm a better person for getting that out of my system. The issue for me has always been music that glosses up toxic behavior as #goals.
