Bro of course.

Funny thing is some old heads will assume that just because I defend modern music, I must favor it, but in reality MOST of my favorite artists are from the 90s and 2000s. I just refused to turn into an old ratchety old fart after 25 years old and especially as I near 30. It's a sign of someone who isn't a true music fan imo.

true.

I wasn't disagreeing with anything you said, btw.

I was born in the 80s, and I appreciate how music has changed through the decades, even if I might not necessarily consider myself a fan of some of its trends.

if everything sounded the same, I'd probably stop listening to music altogether.

I listen to new music all the time but I've changed genres that I listen to overall since I was a teenager. If I still only liked rock, I'd still be stuck in the past for sure. That scene is dead now popularly.

The good thing about old music is, the cream has already risen to the top. Its easy to pick out hits and things that you might like, because its been done and has always been there.

New stuff requires you to make an effort to sort through and seek out. Most people dont put in the effort or care enough.

This might be the best post in the topic.

That wasn't an insult. We were playing a game of "assume random things about each other's favorite artists without actually knowing what artists the other does or does not like." Your statement was ridiculous, so I was just out-ridiculousing you. I don't know your favorites so I can't know what they do with their genitals and you don't know my favorites so you don't know which ones are still alive, still active or if I listen to any of their current stuff if they are active... let alone whether or not they use autotune. You led with an assumption istead of a question so I just one-upped you on that

Who cares if its popular? Popular doesnt mean anything when you have the entire worlds worth of music at your fingertips. I have 932 artists in my Apple Music and my coworkers can collectively name 12, that doesnt matter in the slightest. Just because The Reticent - The Oubliette has 81 listeners on Last.fm doesnt mean that its not an incredible album and on many peoples, both fans and critics, AOTY 2020 lists. Why do people get so hung up about if a certain artist or genre or what have you is popular or not?

For me it's everything or nothing. I like generally earnest, wholesome songs, like stuff from The Weepies or like the song In The Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee. But if something goes out of its way to be as toxic as it can be - like No Children by the Mountain Goats, or Maria Mena's breakdown of her toxic, abusive relationships - I can fuck with that too.

The issue I have is with casual, normalised toxicity in music. I don't like your standard "we used to be in love but then you changed and everything hurt and we're different people now" songs, or songs that romanticize this idea of being mistreated and left as a lesser person because of it. It's either someone romanticizing an old relationship that made them feel like shit, or romanticizing self-destructive traits because it's fun to be young and free with the freedom to ruin 3-5 years of your life with someone who never loved you.

I brought up Maria Mena earlier because I think that she goes deep into toxic behavior in her music. She has an album about her divorce, where she accuses her husband of being emotionally distant and being unsuited to an equal fulfillment of needs in a relationship - but in songs like Where I Come From and Bend Til I Break, she strongly implies that she physically hurt him during arguments and sought out other men to cheat. The core of the album is "this was a bad idea for both of us, and we both deserve better than each other". She also has a song lyric that goes like "My teen angst led me to look for something destructive, and there you were / with all the characteristics of my mom, familiarity of home".

I still like toxicity in my music, given that it's framed as toxicity. Songs like No Children scratched an itch I had for years, and I'm a better person for getting that out of my system. The issue for me has always been music that glosses up toxic behavior as #goals.

Rock has been dead. The biggest names in rock these days are mostly 20-ish year old bands. There's nothing wrong with liking them though

Me too probably I like shit as far back as the 1920s. I like some classical stuff too just enough to say I like the genre.
