Secret of Mana. I've never been able to get around its combination of lag, ridiculous enemy invincibility frames, and enemy evasion making the basic combat feel like a slog. In a game that makes the player take time between hits if you want to do notable damage and has a charge-up mechanic that takes forever in order to discourage mashing the attack button and make individual attacks count, getting your attacks nullified or delayed due to the game being poorly designed and programmed and giving you poor feedback on what went wrong is really frustrating.

I think Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean's battle systems have aged really poorly even compared to Eternia and Star Ocean 2. And they've basically both got generic SNES RPG plots that try a little or pretend to maybe be something different for a bit before pretty much giving up a few hours in and their characters generally aren't good either. I kind of feel these two are good counterarguments to nostalgia being the reason why people love old games so much because practically nobody in the English-speaking world even played these when they were relevant, I don't think they're good at this point, and yet they still ended up fondly thought of!

Symphonia > Abyss > Eternia > Who cares > Phantasia (played both SNES & GBA)/Destiny (PS1)/Legendia/Dawn of the New World

I thought that Abyss's battle system was pretty cool (still liked Symphonia's better, which I don't think is a common opinion? I'm a pretty scrubby Tales player, though) but the characters and story were a mixed bag for me and the pacing seriously hurt the game. Abyss also wins my vote for worst RPG world map.

Hoping Vesperia lives up to the hype!

That said, while Mr. Game & Watch can take out worthless new characters, he's probably not at all strong himself. If you want to nominate a classic Smash leech, why not go with Roy? He'd almost certainly be at least a little stronger and he's never made a contest.

Star Fox 64 would be the strongest Star Fox game by a ridiculous amount but a lot of that would speak more to the weakness of Star Fox in general than anything else. The franchise has been tragically mismanaged for over two decades now. And for all that Star Fox 64 provides great nostalgia and memorable voice acting, it frankly needs those to even be considered in a match like this, because most of gamefaqs would never give a second glance at a rail shooter without the Star Fox brand.

And New Vegas isn't weak. We don't have any good data on Star Fox 64 but it's almost certainly weaker than fellow N64 game Goldeneye and that game probably doesn't beat New Vegas by a ton. 2015 X-stats say 53.75%. Goldeneye/Star Fox 64 probably do get stronger relative to New Vegas as our votals decline, though.

Nintendofaqs could definitely pull out a win (I'd probably pick Star Fox 64) but I'd expect it wouldn't be by much.

I got lazy on Canada and the U.K., yeah. Guess they had too many votes for the quick-check I was doing on the other countries to work properly. Was careful about the U.S. because I knew it wouldn't fly there.

Puerto Rico isn't its own country so I was not incorrect in not including it.

I think Divinity Original Sin II is pretty much worthless. It wasn't too far from losing to Doki Doki Literature Club in the PC poll, and then DDLC was almost tripled by Cuphead in the indie poll. Given that, Divinity held together shockingly well in the final poll by coming close to Cuphead, but both were below 8% of the vote there so that was probably just its hardcore fanbase at work. DOSII absolutely does not seen like a game that's going to fare well on gamefaqs in a 1-on-1 unless it gets rallied. Metroid Samus Returns could turn out completely laughably weak and still be stronger.

So I was bored and got to wondering, given our abysmal votals, just how low the number of voters in individual countries could be getting at this point.

So I took our lowest votal poll in a ridiculously long time (https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6950-best-of-2017-mobile) and worked backward from the percentages to figure out how many people in various countries voted there. With votals still declining I figure that's the future!

That said, these votal numbers seems pretty consistent with what I roughly recall of previous gamefaqs results and my intuition on what makes sense. There's also only 248 votes that the countries I specifically listed did not account for.

If Hellblade and Divinity are indie games, does that mean Nihon Falcom games are indie now? They apparently only had 49 total employees as of 2015 (https://ask.fm/AskEndlessHistory/answers/133993233703), self-publish their own games in Japan, and clearly don't have large production values.

"Biological female whose parents raised her as a male" is a manga/anime trope dating all the way back to Tezuka and was codified by Rose of Versailles in the 70's. It's definitely been used to explore some themes of feminism and gender identity over the years but when you still see it in modern works like AA5 that aren't explicitly about those subjects it's probably just as a trope.

I was going to say Apollo Justice, and that was indeed very anticlimactic. With how much Phoenix Wright games build up their final cases, totally blowing it at the climax is kind of a big deal!

Then I remember Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton and yeah that was probably worse.

Most of the other bad endings I can think of are either old school ones that aren't really trying at all or are from games I wasn't digging and didn't expect much out of at that point - and therefore don't offend me.

Donkey Kong vs. Meta-Knight looks like it might be kinda close based on some past results but come the match I don't think it would be in any doubt whatsoever. Donkey Kong is probably stronger than used to be; he almost tripled Falco last character battle. Meta-Knight has shown he can beat fodder-line Nintendo leeches (and Peach) but totally destroying them is something else. I'd be more curious to see if Donkey Kong could beat Captain Falcon.

I'm playing this game for the first time too. Currently on Chapter 2. Have been told to go to Jenis Royal Academy but I have like half a dozen sidequests to take care of before that.

I kinda like the game, but there's definitely a "where's the beef?" feeling to the whole thing. By most accounts this gets addressed later on and in the sequel though; hopefully it'll live up to the praise.
