While I do recognize aspects worth praising in Maniac Mansion and it certainly sounds like an improvement over previous Adventure games, I played it for the first time a couple years back and my impression was basically "some good jokes but outside the context of its era this is clearly a terrible game."

I'd probably just collapse charmander's A and B tier together. Those are all massive selling franchises who sell millions and whose releases are treated as a big deal.

That leaves room for us to make a new F-tier at the bottom for Nintendogs!

The Final Chapter of FC was probably my favorite part of either of the first two games.

Except for the dozen or so chest monsters in the final dungeon. Those got old pretty fast.

22.2% on Snake in 2013, which projects to 20.65% on that year's Link (and we have a direct Snake/Link match). Dark Dawn was three years old at that point, had kind of disappointed people (and Isaac was barely in it) yet he still seemed to be doing about as well as ever.

Assuming no SFF, that's pretty consistent!

I think Isaac gets his strength from being the main character of a nostalgic and well-liked JRPG with a pretty high playrate among the gamefaqs demographic and barring a major site shift that's probably enough to prop him up until the end of time. He never had any cultural relevance whatsoever so no need to worry about that fading and he's probably even immune to changing tastes as people age because his characterization was so minimal (in GS1) or dull (the other games) in the first place. His series looks dead now and a Smash appearance unlikely (especially given the Assist Trophy removal), so he probably won't boost. It's also notable that Isaac hasn't missed a character battle since the field was expanded in 2007 and apparently he even got a 6 seed in 2010 so he's likely to keep coming back.

Is there a reason why FE1 got left out of the playrate poll? I hated that game and am curious to know how many others suffered through it out of sad completionism despite Mystery of the Emblem having existed well before anyone in the west had played either.

As flawed as Shadow Dragon is, Mystery of the Emblem having a higher rating strikes me as misguided, especially with New Mystery existing; but, that result could be blamed on SD having quadruple the playrate.

Binding Blade having a higher playrate than Radiant Dawn is definitely not what I would have guessed - and in the latter survey Radiant Dawn outright won favorite game despite that! I guess once you get deep enough into fandom, the percentage of people willing to emulate if they have no other options to play the game in English is pretty high.

Interesting that Hector > Lyn remains true for the protagonist poll. I had thought that one was obvious but over the years people doing stuff like getting Lyn into the 2013 Character Battle or hyping up the possibility of playable Lyn in Smash had made me doubt myself a little and figure maybe my expectations were out of whack due to the FE7 board being so weird about Lyn. Aaaand now I look at the first survey again and see Lyn beat Hector on the"favorite in all of Fire Emblem" question. Huh.

Yay for 3-13 Archer getting a vote. I assume people have forgotten Gheb, Batta, and Glass at this point? Guess those were mostly gamefaqs-centric jokes, though.

I'm completely out of the loop at this point (still haven't gotten around to playing Awakening) but Sacred Stones > Blazing Sword surprises me; that was most definitely not the consensus in the 00s, as reflected in those games' rating and review averages on this site. I guess SS is a generally kinder game though, since you can do optional battles and shop from the map. It also doesn't force you into a long tutorial your first time through, which, yeah, is probably pretty annoying if you go into these games fresh nowadays.

It's not like Sonic has looked at all good since that long ago victory over Crono in 2006.

And considering:
-In 2013 Frog got 36% on Cloud (in a threeway at that; there was another option if you just wanted to antivote FFVII!)
-In 2010 Sephiroth was worth 45% on Cloud through Snake
-In 2015 CT T looked outright stronger than FFVII

Crono might not necessarily beat Sephiroth but I think he'd at least get fairly close.

It's a fun game but not really memorable. I can remember pretty much every single level from DKC 1,2 and even 3. They were all real unique with some cool mechanic. DKCR, well, all the levels just kinda blend together in my mind and nothing sticks out. Also, the tikis were super bland enemies. I still beat the game 100% on the 3DS, but it just isn't memorable.

I 100%ed it on Wii and yeah, I remember very little of DKCR's specific levels, enemies, or hazards despite recalling DKC1/2/3 pretty well - though the latter part owes a lot to having played them so many times as a kid.

I do remember not really liking the aesthetic they went with and thinking the game was too shiny. Admittedly I have no idea how you would capture the old games' 16-bit prerendered look in a modern game but DKCR definitely didn't scratch the itch.
