IIRC the last time you see Amuro's dad in the first episode or two, he got sucked out into space when the colony got a hole blasted in it. While wearing a space suit so he didn't immediately die but that probably still wasn't good for him.

The TCD version is actually preferred by many fans, for the soundtrack and combining the two games together.

Though it probably affects Ys 1 more than 2, since the Eternal/Complete version of 1 has an absurdly low level cap and jacks up the difficulty of a couple bosses to an insane degree compared to the rest of the game.

I also played both the Famicom and Master System versions of Ys I (would not recommend either!) shortly before those. Given how those were also balanced around "get to the level cap or at least close to it if you want to beat the bat boss" I'm assuming the original 80s computer versions of Ys I did something like that too. Probably for the best that Turbo CD Ys I deviated there, though.

seemingly unpopular opinion: none of the 80s versions of Dark Fact are at all hard and at least on Normal Mode Ys Chronicles Dark Fact isn't too bad either (just loaded up my Ys I save on Steam, won in less than 10 tries, beat him again the attempt after that), although the speed and amount of projectiles do make the fight feel perhaps a little dumb.

Oh hey, by coincidence I recently played both the Turbo CD and Famicom versions of Ys II. Maybe I can get a point in this thing I otherwise pay no attention to!

...Finished one on January 30th and the other on January 31st. Wow. Recently beaten waiver I guess!
Anyway, uh. Turbo CD version is good (probably isn't better than the Steam one overall but I only went through that one once several years back) but don't play the Famicom version unless you're crazy like me!

usually it barely reaches freezing at best and regardless it doesnt generally stay that cold for very long so the pipes dont really ever freeze. If youre cold at that point, you throw on another layer and turn the heat on for at least a bit so typically not too big a deal. Unless theres no electricity, which this year...yeeeah.

Not sure Spearow has a lot of appeal but its available early and doesnt suck. Might be borderline with low.

The game is currently on sale for $3.39 on Steam.

By all accounts the game is not very long.

Why not just buy and play the Steam version now? You could easily finish it this weekend but if for some reason you don't have time now, you'd still have another month to do so until preorders for the Limited Run version close. If you really end up thinking it's great then you can go buy the physical edition later too and only be out an extra $3.39. Whereas if you think it sucks, you save a lot of money this way.

Clover Field (999/Virtue's Last Reward) - Low fodder

Zero Escape stuff is really weak but not absolute basement level. Clover's in both of the games people actually like, albeit she's mostly liked for stuff from the first game. Character design certainly wouldn't hurt if she gets her VLR design. Hence, probably not LAW.

Gastly (Pokemon) - Mid fodder
Weaker than Haunter but still decently liked. I guess high might not be crazy? But eh.

Primm (Secret of Mana) - Low fodder
Secret of Mana's characters aren't very notable.

Feels like a character that might punch marginally punch above their game's meager playrate thanks to Sega exposure here and there? But probably at least close to LAW.

Enguarde the Swordfish (Donkey Kong Country) - Low fodder
Rambi was likely stronger to begin with but probably isn't that special himself and unlike Engarde, he's had notable appearances more recent than Donkey Kong 64. We've seen what Donkey Kong did when that was his most recent big game and it was seldom at all impressive. Clearly not LAW though, you know who this is if you remember any DKC game.

Machamp (Pokemon) - Low fodder
From what I remember the Machop line wasn't very good in RBY, don't have much reason to be popular in general outside maybe being buff but gamefaqs is WAY the wrong place for that, and Machamp in particular requires a trade evolution. Bruno has one but it's not really hard to handle.

Beat MGS4 for the first time either last year or the year before. Good game but the gameplay/cutscene pacing, the shifting settings, and the lack of codec took me out of it a bit and it's my least favorite of the first four.

I don't see this talked about much (not that I've looked that hard) but aren't The Philosophers kind of a stupid idea? An international group of super-elites from the United States, the Soviet Union, and the Republic of China (who remain in place after the communists take over apparently?) that controlled vast wealth and worked together behind the scenes to manipulate the world and advance their interests but that turned against each other after World War II? I can't parse this as making sense with known history and events given that MGS more or less follows those (but with a few new big events here and there and a lot of additional stuff going on under the surface) through at least the fall of the Soviet Union or so. Kojima's stuff on politics and history is sometimes insightful or at least interesting or fun but here it reads like he took a ridiculous antisemetic conspiracy theory from around the and replaced the parts about "the Jews" with "the Philosophers."

I haven't played anything besides the original two games, Twin Snakes, and MGS1-4, mind, but yeah. Am I missing something?

Ryudo (Grandia 2) - Low fodder
I guess. Grandia is more well-liked for the battle system than anything else but Ryudo is fine and on a site like gamefaqs Grandia II is probably both popular and well-liked enough for its main to avoid LAW.

Dratini (Pokemon) - Low fodder
Dragonair is sleek and kind of cool looking in that respect. Dratini I think people just wish would evolve faster.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys (5th game; there were two distinct Ys IVs) was probably the best in its franchise for about a dozen years.

dont think I could easily and straightforwardly call it better than oath in felghana and origins though and havent played more recent games but people sure seemed to like viii.

Not sure Lezard is worth much. I am not a big believer in Lenneth and think her 2013 match was ridiculously favorable for her. Even looking extremely critically at that performance though, I dont think you can call her worse than a borderline low/mid fodder so Lezard can probably manage to avoid LAW I guess. Maybe not by a lot though.

Emil (Nier) - Low fodder
He's a major character in Nier, Yoko Taro wears his face in all his public appearances, and I haven't played Automata but my understanding is that he makes some sort of appearance there? I kinda doubt people will care much about anything else to do with Emil unless they already care about the original Nier game to begin with, though. Replicant remaster might help a bit but we'll have to wait and see on that.

Speaking of, would Brother Nier and Papa Nier count as different characters?

Cleopatra (Civilization series) - Low fodder
I know very little about Civilization or its fanbase. Gandhi has the nuclear weapon thing going for him, does Cleopatra have anything notable? Hard to see her beating Low either way.

The final Nido evolutions are popular for their wide selection of usable TMs, looking cool, and being available early. Nidorino is in the Red version intro. I don't think Nidorina has much in comparison.

probably the worst x-men character we've done. I nominated her solely because she was playable in the Arcade game. It's not enough to look even halfway respectable.
