Anyways, I don't think Nintendo ever really intended for there to be a single individual Toad that was actually named Toad rather than there just being generic Toads. I think we all know the story behind Mario 2 at this point? The Mario cartoons and similar material of that era was western-created and western-oriented marketing that included Toad as a main character because of his Mario 2 appearance and probably wasn't being closely observed (or even particularly cared about) by anyone working on the games - and of course Miyamoto himself isn't fully fluent in English even now so he certainly couldn't have been making sure they stuck to the (lol) Mario canon. There was a "Toad" individual in Super Mario RPG but that was developed by Square and for all I know that might just have been a localization thing. That leaves...what, maybe Wario's Woods?

"Civilian Toad" pretty much doesn't even exist outside of early western marketing.

Granted that doesn't look like a bad performance but I'd generally expect a Pokemon game in a sea of other JRPGs to overperform.

FFVI straight up beat FFVII last time.

Maybe everyone realized it's not as good as they remembered.

FFVI didn't win the 2014 full-series poll, though; it merely got kinda close. It was the 1-on-1 poll the day after where FFVI won.

Except with some additional games (from the Nintendo portables, plus Yoshi's Island) added to the poll.

It's still early but it looks to me like Super Mario World has improved its number on SMB3 quite a bit, despite that Yoshi's Island being added should if anything hurt it.

Seems to me like SNES Classic is making its influence felt. That probably had something to do with FFVI almost beating FFVII a few days ago, too.

GTA III based on GotD stats, San Andreas and Vice City losing respectably to much-bigger name PS1 JRPGs in 2015, and my impression of Dragoon's popularity (or lackthereof).

That's not a match that could realistically happen at this point though, because we probably won't be seeing either game in a match ever again. Neither made it into the 2015 contest and Legend of Dragoon had to survive a vote-in to even make it into GotD.
