Yes, GNG was one of Capcom's earliest NES ports, which they contracted a third-party developer to do. This developer was Micronics, an infamous developer also responsible for the bad NES versions of 1942, Ikari Warriors, Athena, Super Pitfall, and more

I wonder how rank works in Gun.Smoke, maybe a strategic death at a certain point will reduce the rank enough to make a later part easier

after running some errands and taking a nap

I proceed and I actually got stuck on level 8. I dunno, I beat it on my first try last time. What happened here?

I spend an hour on it before I won

I lost some power ups, and all of my rifles

I guess I should elaborate on that

There are 4 power ups

Bullets, Boots, Rifles, and horses

the first 3 you can stack up to 5 times. Bullets give you more rapid fire, boots make you faster, rifles extend the reach of your bullets, and horses not only increase your speed even further, but you GET HIT POINTS WITH IT! I think about 3.

I don't remember if the stacking thing was in the NES version so thats why i'm explaining it

anyways, every time you die, you lose one of each power up. as long as you can reach some barrels and replenish them, its okay. You're back to where you were. the only downside is if you didn't die, you could've increased your stock, but since you died, you lose one of each and the items are just evening them out, ya know?

but if you die before you do that, then you just lose AGAIN.

so if I have 3 of each, die, then have 2, the worst is when you die again before you get 3 one more.

so then you just have 1.of each

playing each level for so long you're bound to slip up earlier than usual and this happens. more than once

I had 3 rifles on this stage but now I just have the one from before the boss fight

and now I'm heading to level 9. THere are no power ups from the last checkpoint to the final boss. i was hoping to have max items on this guy

I'm probably gonna keep losing until I have nothing again. and I'm gonna go into the last level barehanded

I believe in the NES version the effects don't stack multiple times, but you can still have a stockpile of each powerup and as long as you keep at least one you get the effect.

ghosts n goblins is the first game, then came ghouls n ghosts, then super ghouls n ghosts is the third game in the series and I think was made for consoles instead of being a port like the nes or genesis games.

in the beginning of the last level is WAY more tough than the rest of it

once I jumped that hurdle, I actually just made it to the boss screen without dying

buuuuuut....it starts

I can still kill the first two goons but then everything comes crashing down once the final guy comes in

he has a shot gun and dude, the blast covers almost the whole screen

and the problem is every time you hit him, he gets in a crawl position and starts rapidly firing for at least 5 seconds

which is a fuckin eternity because your guy dies in one hit

and the infinitely spawning mooks is just the chocolate sprinkles on this hit sundae

well, Ghouls 'n Ghosts is probably the most well-liked of the three in Europe, it was pretty well-received on Commodore 64, Amiga, and other microcomputers. And it got ported to Mega Drive which was more popular there than NES or SNES

I think I may have mentioned it earlier but you are at the complete mercy of this game's RNG. I basically won because I got a good hand with the mooks, so I could fight the boss uninterrupted

but look how long it took for me to get that

I basically got nothing but bottom row snipers for like a solid 30 seconds

the strategy I was employing would not have worked if I got a single normal mook on the screen or even a top row sniper

it was entirely luck

you had to have it to make the boss appear, otherwise the level looped when you got to the end. You could buy it or find it hidden somewhere in the level by shooting at random spots

man stage five is a mess.

stage one? fairly easy. stage two? not unreasonable. stage three? also not too bad unless you're playing the nes version where red arremers are a nightmare. four? back to fairly easy.

but then five? like the worst thing about the game in terms of controls and such is sticking on ladders or getting stuck crouching which leads you to getting hit.

and stage five is a stage made up of ladders and enemies that often fire low shots you would have to duck to block with the shield wheeeeeeee.

at least I'm starting to work out a strategy to get past the big men.
