I'd be more surprised at Mai making it close than I would Morrigan tripling her. Marvel vs. Capcom isn't strong, exactly, but MvC2 did well enough in GotD and the franchise is relevant to the mass userbase here's gaming experience and history in a way that SNK games simply aren't.

Which results could change?
-Spyro couldn't flip the 2002 result against Morrigan in 2013 but he got much closer and 2018 seemed to indicate a major strength boost for him thanks in part to the Spyro trilogy remaster being imminent. Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is pretty cold now too. I think the kiddies would finally wake up.
-Popular or not, Terry Bogard is in Smash now and that probably gives him some kind of floor. Aya proved she was still worth something in 2018 but I don't think she was that impressive either. I'd favor Terry.
-As ridiculously terrible as Gordon looked in 2018, he still isn't losing to Tina Armstrong again.
-Scorpion's basically always been a solid (if sorta unimpressive) midcarder so he should hold off Kazuya, since gamefaqs never cared about the latter before Smash.
-Kirby > Jill
-Post-RE2make Claire maybe makes Tidus look bad but I don't think Tidus can be bad enough to drop that one.
-lol Mr. Driller vs. Serious Sam
-Kirby > Bomberman
-Pac-Man vs Scorpion could actually be dangerous for the latter. Pac-Man was in that weird 2018 half-division that kept having close matches that made almost everyone not named Riku and Sans look good. Something weird could have happened there but I think post-Smash Pac-Man is at least a threat to weaker midcarders.
-Mega Man would have beaten Sephiroth in 2018 but thanks to the FFVII remake Sephiroth might still win that one?
-If 2018 Cloud could narrowly beat Mario before the FFVII remake started coming out, he can probably do better now? Certainly not a lock though.
-Snake > Crono, maybe Crono embarrasses him a bit though.
-Samus > Sephiroth/Mega Man

I won't dispute Sonic Adventure not being all that good, but it reviewed well at the time ( https://web.archive.org/web/20171204041051/http://www.gamerankings.com/dreamcast/198694-sonic-adventure ) so it's hard to say it qualifies for the cycle.

People had complaints about Heroes and the quality of the game was questioned shortly after release in a way that wasnt really the case for the first 2 Sonic Adventures. Its mediocre reception seemed to be confirmation of Sonics gradual fall from relevance but the way I remember it is that most people werent going what the hell Sonic franchise until Shadow tbe Hedgehog was announced.

2010 - 2013 (presumably until BotW came out really) Link was pretty feeble by Link standards, yeah, but 60/40ing a Cloud on par with Mario like he did in 2018 seems about what peak Link is supposed to do.

Halo 3 was a big deal and helped Chief a lot but in 1-on-1 without shenanigans Chief would have only been a near-elite.

Kurisu probably isnt worth much because almost nobody heres really played the VN but the anime is probably popular and watched enough to save her from LAW. Id figure shed be weaker than Okabe but she almost has as many people who favorited her on MAL. Not confident the rest of the cast is worth anything.

Parasect is just not gonna be strong.

I continue to not think too much of Golden Sun non-main party members, especially those not on the first games main team.

Most of the increase in the last option since the previous time this poll was held came at the expense of the E-sports option, too. So people just dumped the "not a real sport" sports for "No sports at all, even the fake ones."

I was really eager to learn to read as a young child so that I could read video game manuals by myself. That probably helped.

The actual games...probably didn't hurt but I don't think were a major factor.

The first two are low fodder and not even good low fodder. Id figure Piers as the weakest playable character on the first two games but really you aint playing Golden Sun for the character interaction anyways.

Gonna go low fodder for Chao too but it could be close to mid fodder I guess. Sonic Adventure 2, at least, should have a decent playrate and the Chao are kind of nostalgic.

Cloud beats Squirtle. Beating Pikachu the round after might be tough if Snake holds him back though - unless Sora doesn't manage to blow it against Pikachu and Blue this time, in which case Snake's got a solid chance.

Non-Symphonia Tales of character that's not a main protagonist? Yeah, low fodder at best is probably a safe bet.
Unown has some lore focus, was big in the third movie, and has the letter gimmick. Totally useless to ever actually put on your team or use in battle though.
Besides his DQVI role, Terry was the main of Dragon Warrior Monsters. Not many outside Japan actually played Dragon Warrior Monsters though, so that still leaves him pretty weak.

Probably Phantasy Star 1, if that got to 50+. My original playthrough got around halfway through before being distracted and I've beaten it twice since then.

It's got a sort of neat setting, good production values for the era, and not too much else.

Kingdra being part-Dragon at a time when that was still a neat novelty, being an evolution of an (admittedly not cared about much) RBY Pokemon, and being a notably tough opponent on a gym leader's team all help but not enough that I see it as mid fodder.
