Drugs should be legal. Like drinking is. Just because you can have a problem with a substance doesn't mean it needs to be illegal. Legalize it, tax it, use money from enforcement on other things.
I take it you and all the "drugs r gr8 legalize crystel meth!!!!1" crew don't live anywhere near a city that is experiencing high rates of drug abuse, and low rates of them getting taken off the street because your government doesn't believe in punishing criminals.

The sheer amount of drug addicts harassing, assault and robbing people blind in Canada is out of control, and the government refuses to even acknowledge the issue. If anything, drug laws for hard drugs should be MORE strict, as clearly just letting these people do whatever they want is clearly not working.

CHRIS HAYES (HOST): Then there are the benefits for right-wing media machine. I want you to listen to this quote very closely. One Fox News insider succinctly described the anti-COVID mandate segments and vaccine resistant commentary as quote, great for ratings. Another current Fox employee said the numbers clearly demonstrate that there are vanishingly fewer subjects these days that get "our viewers more excited or engaged than" those kinds of segments. I'm sure it's probably true. They kind of know what they're doing over there. The issue rates, so that's why leaning into it, despite the fact that it might get their own viewers sick or killed. Despite the fact that Fox News has a vaccine requirement itself. Their own human resources department said earlier this month "90% of full-time employees reported they are fully vaccinated" after the company, wait for it, mandated everyone to report their vaccination status. Oh, my god, that's a private decision, how dare they.

And they would soon be introducing daily testing for those who are still unvaccinated. Daily testing, that is five times as onerous as the policy Joe Biden proposed that unvaccinated workers be tested weekly. The policy they are railing against day in and day out and calling tyranny. Notice by the way they don't call out their employer, they could if they had any courage. If you think it's tyranny, you could do that on air, but you won't. And I am willing to bet you that nearly all those people who go on air every night and rail against it, they are vaccinated, their loved ones are vaccinated.

They're selling this poison because it is profitable for them. And they truly do not care, I mean I don't know what's in their hearts but their revealed preference, all I can judge is their actions -- do not seem to care if people who watch them get killed as a result. And yes, there are actual human beings taking their last breaths with a plastic tube down their throat while they say goodbye to loved ones over iPad, entire universes of memories and life experiences snuffed out forever but guess what, it's great for ratings.

Jesus, he laid into them.

Oh man I actually have hope that progressives are going to tell the senate to go fuck itself I am a little hyped
I think Pelosi is going to have to call off the vote, Jayapal isn't going to bend on this I don't think and she likely has 20+ votes which is more than enough to kill it. FWIW, all the pressure the impending vote caused got Manchin to at least give a framework and even if I'm supremely unhappy that reconciliation is looking like it's going to get gutted down to like the $2.1-2.3t range it seems like the talks are back on instead of stalled and maybe even dead. So from that standpoint this whole theater has been productive, but yeah, vote has to be postponed at this juncture I think.

But it was always Sinema holding this up. I actually suspect that if Manchin were the only problem here, his statements over the past 24 hours would be enough to get the CPC to move forward here. Manchin is an asshole but he's an asshole that can be worked with (and while I don't think he's ever publicly said it, it's clear his goal is to gut the climate provisions which... I mean in an ideal world should be a dealbreaker but the reality is it means there's 51 votes against them so we're going to just be fucked either way.) But Sinema? lmfao no one trusts her. Progressives are right to hold the line without assurances from her - and hell assurances aren't enough with her, they really do need the vote.

Centrists have been acting in such bad faith this entire time. Like I've always been conflicted on the pragmatic matter of "Well, do we just take this because something is marginally better than nothing and the alternative very well looks like both deals blow up?" but that's the exact sentiment that the centrist faction has been playing on to fuel their bad faith bullshit this entire time because it's always been clear their play has been to play to that and roll over the progressives and you know, fuck it. You have to take a stand here.

GOP actually would be smart to try and provide the votes in the House to pass this even over a CPC defection but McCarthy is whipping against the bill and while you would 100% see a dozen or so jump onto the ship once it became clear it was passing, they won't do that until there are 218 Dems voting for it. Wouldn't kill reconciliation I don't think but it would really undermine any power and leverage progressives have in the negotiations moving forward and basically give Manchin all the power... more than he already has, that is.

If the reconciliation bill passes and taxes go way up, their constituents are going to be very unhappy though. The Republicans hold 50 out of 100 seats in the Senate and are only a few seats short of a majority in the House. With those numbers, I would expect them to be able to block a $3.5 trillion tax and spend package from passing. Under McConnell's leadership we've seen them achieve far more than that with fewer seats.

If taxes end up going way up, I think voters are going to be quite unhappy that the Republicans let it happen because they absolutely insisted on zero compromise whatsoever, pushing the moderate Dems into the arms of the far left people. Instead of say, letting Susan Collins and Joe Manchin go off into a conference room and come back with an agreement that ensures taxes don't go up and the left go into fits of screaming.

Jail is treatment, and getting them to just stop doing drugs is the only treatment. Why waste tax dollars on wishy-washy "feel good" theories like "cure them with hugs and kisses" when throwing them in the slammer is proven and effective. Things didn't start going downhill in Canada until bill C-75 was passed which put into effect "catch and release" programs. Get them off the streets so they can stop terrorizing old people and stealing bicycles and get them off the drugs. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. The war on drugs failed because they focused on weed which is pretty much harmless. Seeing governments actually taking drug related crime seriously would be a welcome change of pace.

One of my relatives couldn't get into the ICU because of COVID. She was vaccinated. But she had a lung disease (caused by Rheumatoid Arthritis) , and needed treatment. Unfortunately, it was too late. By the time they admitted her to the ICU for treatment, they couldn't give her the treatment anymore. All because a bunch of assholes refused to get vaccinated and ended up taking up space in the ICU. Further, she wasn't able to spend many of her last days with her family because of Covid Restrictions caused by a raise in Covid Cases in the area, caused by people not getting vaccinated. If jail isn't good for getting drug addicts clean and sober, at the very least it gets them off the streets and stops them from harming innocent people just trying to live their lives.

After a disastrous election where said party lead didn't win her seat, and the Greens lost a bunch of percentage points from the previous election, the party asked her to step down, and her response was to call the most progressive party in our system "racist/sexist/antisemetic"

Unions seem to be split on the issue, like the country at large. They basically represent the opinions of the people who work for them. I'm not surprised that the police unions are filled with asshats, but many other unions support the mandate. My union has been pro-vaccination from the very beginning. They made huge efforts to inform people about vaccination info and how to get vaccinated and get supplies and appointments to members even before it was open to us through regular channels. They've offered bonuses and incentives to get vaccinated and have never made a push against it.

It's mainly because our entire country is so broken that there are unions that would make choices that hurt their members like being anti-vaccination or anti-mask. They are a microcosm of our nation.

It's probably worth pointing out too that at least some of the unions came out as anti-mandate initially because I mean. If you are trying to bargain, get leverage over the actual process of vaccination (even if you agree with it), or just trying to win other concessions, that's just the position you have to take. Basically, it's more complicated than how it's being reported because some unions are just bluffing, which is...fine, I guess. It's when things settle or fall through and it goes from bluff to actual policy that it becomes a problem.
