I mean it's been years since I watched anything from that rally but I can definitely say I never got the vibe of "don't care about the issues" from it.

It was mostly about mocking Glenn Beck.

Both of those seem completely reasonable. Non Refundable tax credits and income limits are pretty standard across the tax code.

I don't think the government bleeding money with handouts is sustainable and we need to raise income taxes

When you start means testing things like daycare coverage and child credits, you do two things: One, the people just over the borderline of the limit get punished, and two, it breeds contempt from every direction for those who do benefit.

Were talking about kids here. Say what you will about having kids responsibly or whatever, but the economy literally cant afford people to not have kids, and that includes poor and lower-middle class people.

Without knowing the details, I assume it would be a phased out limit like most tax breaks. 60k should also cover most lower middle class outside of high cost of living areas.

All taxes should take into account cost of living but thats another issue entirely.

Plus, three, it puts an additional barrier in the way causing people who should theoretically benefit from the program to decide it's just not worth the hassle of jumping through the hoops to prove they qualify and decline to take advantage of the benefit they're entitled to.

All you need to do is file taxes right? Most of the people who would qualify would get tax refunds anyways so they are already leaving money on the table. Thats another existing issue that isnt actually related to Manchins concerns

Is 60k the point where the phase out starts or ends? Either way, that's really not a lot for a family. That's 15k a person for a family of four.

The problem with means testing is that it's not aspirational. It isn't perceived as providing a benefit for people who aspire to do better economically. Like when you cut taxes on the rich, a lot of non-rich people expect to benefit because they expect to become rich in the future. Most of them won't, but they still like the tax cut because they expect to benefit.

60k for families is a joke number. That's basically a married couple both working at $15/hour.

I mean pretty much all of this has been mentioned one way or another, but pretty sure research has shown that means testing can, and has, cost more than the alleged savings beause of the administrative/bureaucratic overhead it creates in establishing the means by which vetting applicants are eligible now which it requires. Like SNAP and its associated programs was shown to basically have administrative overhead at 15 to 40 cents of every dollar of benefits.

It also erects barriers for those most in need who are also the ones least able to be able to expend the time and effort needed to jump those hurdles.

It all basically boils down to a moralistic argument from the conservative/right (and unquestionably adopted by moderate dems) that there are those people who "deserve" assistance and those who do not. And surprise, surprise research has shown that means testing creates a stigmatizing effect that also drives some away from programs which they would otherwise be eligible for. It's just another form of the absolutely grotesque worldview that gets drilled into us about "productivity" and "the dignity of work" where capitalism tries to tie self-worth to jobs rather than valuing a person as a person.

There's a reason why the participation rate in the food stamp program and Medicaid is substantially lower than in Social Security and Medicare.

Fact: It doesn't really much matter what the Dems manage to pass (or not pass), at least as far as the midterm elections go. Whatever happens, they'll lose their House majority (probably by enough that taking it back in '24 won't happen) and about 3 Senate seats.

Democrats also desperately need to stop playing defense and fight for something next year even if it doesn't pass.

That's exactly what the Dems are trying in the Virginia governor race right now.
